In which I obsess about books, among other things

I took the train downtown last night to have dinner with M. and his fiancée at Ryoko's, a little below-the-street sushi restaurant on Taylor between Post and Sutter, just around the corner from M.'s old apartment. Unlike many sushi places in the city, it's run by honest-to-pete Japanese people, and although they make concessions to Americans' ( Read more... )

I've read most of Irvings oeuvre and think Owen Meaney is the best. And lest you think I'm a book snob (okay, maybe I'm a little bit of one) I've read almost everything King wrote up to Pet Sematary at which point I said, "No mas," because I felt he was getting really sloppy and uninspired. Somehow, though, I missed Misery.

Can we all come visit you and have you show us all the cool places to eat in SF?

Of course! Though there are so many cool places to eat here that I can't even claim to have eaten at a quarter of them. And I'm 80% useless north of Market...

I don't want to give anything away, but be sure to let me know what you think of the ending of The Crimson Petal and the White.

Like Fer, I am deeply shamed by how few books on this list I've read. I did read Being Dead, Fingersmith (which I highly recommend and which makes a good companion novel to TCPATW because it's also set in Victorian England), High Fidelity, The Handmaid's Tale, and The Secret History. Oh, and also the first two books in the His Dark Materials trilogy, but not the third.

Now I can't wait to finish. I'll definitely let you know.

And thanks for the Fingersmith recommendation. I remember reading good reviews when it came out. I will definitely add it to the (very long and growing) list; it sounds interesting.

These lists are always pretty arbitrary. Aside from the books I'd read, most of the other authors are people I'd never heard of!
