FIC: The Things That Sustain Them (STXI, PG13)

Dec 13, 2009 05:56

This story is a pinch-hit for Round 2 of trek_exchange. The requestor asked for a "happy gen fic," with "any combination of Chekov, Sulu, Scotty, and Uhura." The requestor kindly offered a few prompts, but the one I tackled was this:

A normal day on the bridge (e.g.: facing off against some space anomaly; the Captain gets possessed (maybe, we're not sure yet ( Read more... )

I loved this so much. (And the fact that it was inspired by "The Things They Carried" is icing on the cake.) I loved all the different gifts, and the bittersweetness of them, and the way the crew is clearly a supportive family (even when that means laughing at each other a little -- "polishing his sword" indeed *g*).

I'm delighted that you liked all the different gifts -- I was definitely going for "bittersweet," so I'm thrilled that's how it came across. And *yes*, they are definitely a supportive family ... I wanted that truth to underpin everything else going on in the story, that what Uhura says at the end is only part of the story. The things that sustain them are also right there in front of them...

Thank you so much for taking the time to read and leave such lovely feedback!

Aww, this was so sweet :). You really put a lot of meaning into all those gifts - and you really made me feel for Kirk. And Pavel and Bones were just adorable :D.

I'm so glad you thought Pavel and Bones were adorable -- I just want to squish them all sometimes, especially Pavel. And I wanted Kirk to come across as the complicated, contradictory, confusing person I believe him to be -- funny, caring, commanding, silly, thoughtful, intelligent, unpredictable, and often/usually surprising. He slips into most of the scenes, and that was important to me. He's the backbone on the family, the center around which they all revolve...

Ah, obviously your comment got me thinking. I'll stop there and say *thank you* for reading and leaving such a lovely comment. I'm glad you enjoyed!

Haha, you are like my brain twin this morning :P - that is exactly how Kirk is, and I love how you caught that - the contrast from how he diffuses the eh, nostalgia? after Bones goes to call Joanna and how he reacts to the picture is so telling, how, unlike TOS!Kirk, he's not got everything neat and orderly and shipshape in his mind, how he's this complicated little bundle of good intentions and loyalty and self-worth issues and, yeah, a bit of the frat boy jerk, but he can set it all aside for his crew if the situation calls for it.

Ehm. Lol, I think your comment is shorter than mine, but yeah. Kirk was so IC here :D.

Yes, we're definitely brain twins this morning. :-D And yes, *exactly* to everything you said about Kirk -- that's how I think of him ... he's not together, not yet, but he will be.

Yay that you thought he was IC (that's always the most important thing to me) and yay for long comments. They make me happy.

Very sweet. Great job with the presents, and everyone was very in-character.
