Last night Jeff and I co-hosted our 2nd Semi-Annual 'Scotchtoberfest' Scotch Tasting Evening.  The first event, held in December 2011, was fun.  This one was better.  More people, fewer whiskies, which is a good thing, believe me; last time we had seven people and seven whiskies, and by the end of the evening I was feeling more than a little buzzed ( Read more... )

This is awesome. I'm having my first scotch party this summer - and I've been nervous about it. I have 7 people on my invite list and only 2 are absolutely certain they can make it. Any tips? I didn't have a theme - I was just going to ask them to bring something they've perhaps never tried before.

Dan, thanks for these great tips. I think if I had any questions about how to host one, you've answered them. I think I read somewhere that almonds are a great way to cleanse the palate between drinks. True?

Not sure, to be honest. We tend to use plain unsalted crackers or lightly flavoured crackers (like wheat thins, etc.) and water. I can see how they might work, as long as they weren't salted or otherwise too heavily flavoured.

I'd recommend having at least a full glass of water and some crackers or some plain bread (like slices of a French baguette, or something similar) between each dram of whisky. It cleanses the palate and ensures that you won't end up with a hang-over the next day!
