British people (and I mean ones actually from England)!

I have two serious questions for you all.

1. What the hell is a crumpet, really?

2. What do poor college kids eat since you are the Land of No Ramen?

1. It's a type of spongy...well, I suppose "biscuit" is the closest term. You serve them hot with a topping of some sort - fresh butter, fruit, jams, honey or the like. They're quite good with tea...

2. Ah...what is "Ramen"?

1. Okay, that's kind of weird sounding but also yummy sounding.

2. There is real ramen and instant ramen. Real ramen is the epitome of Japanese cuisine (in my opinion) that is a hearty broth with noodles, vegetable, egg and all sorts of different spices and meats depending on the type and where you go.

The instant stuff is what I was referring to. It's a bag of dehydrated thin curly noodles with a packet of seasoning that could be anything from shrimp to chicken to beef and others. Basically, you combine the noodles with boiling water, add the seasoning, and then you let it sit for a few minutes. Then, before you know it, you have a giant bowl of noodles that only cost you a few yen to buy. Cheap, easy and filling.

1. By itself it is rather bland, sir. But if served properly, it makes for a delightful dish.

2. I... see...? This is a Japanese dish and not a Chinese one? I suppose if the college boys did not have this 'instant ramen' then they may have gone to the pubs. I wouldn't know, sir. I never attended university.

It's a Japanese thing, but the Chinese have accepted the glory that is instant ramen.

Thanks!

It looks like someone was too quick for me. I hope they answered your question okay though. I can't say I really know much about college or university either, I haven't had much schooling, just enough to get by. But if you meant to ask what the poor in general eat, I guess the equivalent would be something like gruel or pottage if one can afford it? They're both somewhat similar to ramen, but the first is sweeter and the second is more like a stew. Does that help?

That sounds kinda of disgusting and something from like the eighteenth century. England can't be that far in the dark ages. Sure, they lack ramen, but they have to have some pre-packaged cheap food that doesn't sound like it's snot in a bowl.

We're hardly in the dark ages. Late nineteenth century actually, and I haven't seen a whole lot in the way of food like that. I travel quite a bit, but usually it's best to stop in and visit restaurants in town. The prices aren't that bad. And really I think you ought to try the food before you go comparing it to snot. Anything can taste good if it is cooked by someone who knows what they're doing.

No, they don't. It's so very sad. Brings tears to my eyes.

2. Well, dumpsters are still fairly universal...
