Night 52: East Wing, Hall A

Oct 16, 2010 14:16

[From here]It was before long Xemnas reached the final corridor he required to pass through in order to reach his destination. Though he was only three doors away from his goal, it hardly meant that the Nobody would already delusion himself with the fact that he had accomplished all this easily. Furthermore, he couldn't tell with certainty whether ( Read more... )

[From here]

"Closet's down this way, pretty sure," Scott said quietly as they moved into the hallway, trying to remember just which door it was he had unsuccessfully tried to kick in the last time he had been down here. Apart from that, he had also noted a stairway at the end of the previous hallway, just in case they had to get back down to the first floor at some point and didn't want to take a second trip past Bullet Lane to get there.

After a few moments, he turned his head back over his shoulder to his partners for the night. "Hey, you guys are okay, right? Sorry, I forgot to ask back there."

"No way," the Nobody said breathlessly when he was able to speak without choking for air. The run had taken something out of him, but he was used to running. Looking behind them through the broken lighting, he could tell the girl - was she even a girl? - wasn't following, probably distracted by the sheer number of patients that had been trying to get past her. He was surprised they had managed, actually; he saw the cut on Scott's face was the only injury and decided that was a lot better than it could have been. He'd seen the way Xigbar treated Heartless with the sniping guns he had, and Roxas never wanted to be on the receiving end of that.

Roxas followed the way to the closet closely, tapping the pipe against his legs that were still warm from the exertion. Every few steps he'd turn to watch behind them, just making doubly sure the blonde with the guns (he hadn't even seen anything in her hands! The bullets had come out of her fingers) wasn't stalking them. "I've heard of them but never seen one." Which he was glad for, having now ( ... )

[Back from here]An extra bright surge from one of the bulbs overhead cut Scott off as he moved back out into the hall, casting a sharp, dark shadow on the wall beside him. The shadow remained just as dark and distinct even after the intensity of the light came back down, however, and froze in place even as Scott moved further out. He didn't notice right away, but when his gaze finally caught the stuck shadow, his face went pale. He lifted his arm. The shadow stayed where it was. Then, just to be spiteful, it raised the opposite arm ( ... )

Having been accustomed to the weird looks he got for his inquiries, the Nobody just shrugged Matthew's off. As long as no one was calling him a zombie (the thought made something in his stomach tighten), he was okay with weird looks. But it was like something... well, if he remembered right, it was like something Luxord had told him: he couldn't learn without asking questions. Better than asking one and looking stupid for a few minutes than being clueless. Besides, looking stupid wasn't anything he was too concerned with.

Matthew's explanation of batteries was perhaps vague enough to be helpful, but luckily Scott did the work for him. Taking the packages, he moved towards the door that led back out into the hallway, examining the package in the flickering lights. Three or four days... that wasn't too bad. His flashlight hadn't been having any trouble so far, considering he didn't really use it if someone else had one on. Darkness was his specialty (or at least moving around in it. Light was more his specific specialty). That might ( ... )

Once he had finished explaining what batteries had looked like, Matthew proceeded to walk farther into the cramped closet, looking over different objects as he shuffled along towards the sink. ’Okay…so what kind of stuff would make a good weapon…’ Well...the chemical jugs might be heavy and potentially useful in the “do-not-ingest” category, but it was really just too awkward to actually use anywhere. As for the box cutter on the table…it was way too short, and Matthew didn’t exactly plan on getting that close to the enemy. And then there were the mops…they looked tempting, but he doubted he had the time to snap it in half and create a makeshift spear with it at the moment ( ... )

"Heartless?"

Now Scott knew why Roxas looked so familiar: he looked a lot like Sora. He didn't have time to remember stuff about Chain of Memories or preview material for Kingdom Hearts 2 and the like right now, however, and so didn't get much further along that line of thinking. What he was more focused on right now was finding out whether this really was some kind of Heartless. If Landel could bring in people from any media in the universe, then why not any enemy ( ... )

This was weird. Not just weird, but completely nonsensical. Shadows didn't do this, they didn't play games. They slipped and sneaked and dodged and ambushed, but they didn't tease. Other Heartless, maybe. But Shadows... and regular, human shadows didn't get a life of their own. Suffice to say, Roxas was completely stumped, unsure enough that he didn't feel like taking his eyes off the shifting black was a good idea -

Except he did when Matthew yelled, flicking his head to find the cause. And there it was again: a shadow, moving on its own, twisting and curling into a shape that didn't even vaguely resemble Matthew anymore.

Shadows didn't change shape, either. They were just... pools of darkness.

He looked at his own shadow, suddenly suspicious. But it moved with him, not twisting or churning or turning or trying to push against the floor where the lights had splayed it against the tiles. It was just there. Despite his instincts, he didn't feel the pull of the Heartless. Nobodies didn't have the same feel, the same draw as Heartless ( ... )

Matthew spent a good time staring at the ground, unable to look away from his monstrous shadow churning around him. He could hear speaking around him, but his mind felt numbingly incapable of forming any words to respond with. While it was one thing to be told that monsters were in this asylum, the Canadian quickly learned that it was quite another one to actually encounter them ( ... )

"C-Closet. No lights. I like this plan."

Scott edged toward the closet door, giving that . . . thing a huge-ass berth. Slowly, carefully. The slightest off movement could make things even worse than they were. At least, he was assuming. That would just be his bad luck that an inadvertent sneeze or something would unleash the fires of Hell. Almost there. Almost theeeeere-

Crackling from the intercom. Scott's muscles seized up, caught off-guard. The mad doctor himself was back again, and the woman's voice was conspicuously absent. He spoke of many things, things that started hitting closer to home than Scott would have liked. Risks, things never intended, sacrifices, rules, less concrete, fuzzy methods . . .

"Not me . . . I'm the exception."Scott had started to lose track of which words Landel was speaking and which were his own thoughts ( ... )

Since he stood closer to the janitor closet than Scott was, Matthew had passed through the doorway before him, dragging his boots as he inched backwards through the doorway ( ... )

WHA-KRANGThe bats ricocheted off one another, the strikes perfectly mirrored. Negascott laughed silently through that obnoxious grin of his, winding up for another attack as Scott fell back a few steps from the impact. A whoosh as the shadow bat came rushing down toward Scott's head. Scott gave a grunt, taking advantage of his momentum and turning his stumble into a backward roll, just short of taking a hit. He almost rolled straight back into Matthew, who was dashing out of the closet right then. The only thing that kept that from happening was the sight of Matthew's own twisted shadow out of the corner of his eye ("Gah!" he exclaimed at it), causing him to add a turn to the side at the last second. Scott ended up crouched low to the ground, one hand on the floor for support as he tried to catch his breath ( ... )

Despite the quiet tranquility he should have felt as the natural state of a Nobody, Roxas couldn't help but visibly flinch when the intercom screeched on again, the Doctor speaking this time. His muscles were strung tightly as he put two hands on his pipe, watching the shadows steadily, eyes flicking from Scott's to Matthew's to his own, the latter seemingly perfectly normal in comparison to the other two. There was no surprise that accompanied this new announcement; like the others, Roxas didn't have a clue what it was talking about. Calculated sacrifices? Test subjects - was that was this was all about? Were the patients themselves test subjects ( ... )

Seeing Scott stumble backwards, Matthew managed to step back and out of his way just before Scott would have crashed into him. Clutching at his pipe anxiously, Matthew took advantage of the spare second to glare towards Scott's apparently evil double. So...was this guys sudden entrance connected to their lunatic shadows? He didn't see him appear, but it would explain his darkened appearance ( ... )

NegaScott saw the Keyblade coming. Unfortunately for him, he couldn't keep going for Scott and avoid getting hit by that huge chunk of metal, but no matter, he thought. He didn't have to hit Scott to hurt him. It was just a nice added bonus when he could get it.

The shadow spun in mid-air, twisting himself out of the path of the Keyblade and landing to the side of his originator. Just because he had missed getting hit didn't mean he didn't make contact with the Keyblade, however. Just before he hit the ground, as the thing was passing him by, NegaScott stuck out an arm and caught the weapon in his free hand. It pulled his arm back some with its remaining momentum, but stayed in his grip otherwise. His grin widened. Was that stupid blond yelling at him or something? Well, he wouldn't be for much longer with any luck.

Only just then did Scott the First start getting his wits back together. He could see NegaScott winding his arms back, preparing to launch a weapon each at his companions. Scott's eyes widened. I- He's going to hurt ( ... )

Roxas had fought a lot of creatures that came from darkness, and he certainly hadn't ever expected one of them to touch the Keyblade. Even if the Nobody didn't feel as connected to the weapon as he always had, a shudder of - he wasn't even sure what it was! - passed down his spine, his body cold as he stared at the grin on the shadow's face. When he thought back on it, he knew it was stupid to assume this thing was like a Heartless when it had began acting on its own, completely separate from the nature that Roxas was used to seeing in them ( ... )
