Night 52: M111-M120 Hallway

Oct 13, 2010 22:45

When the intercom rang through the cold room and the lights shut off in time with the click of the unlocking door, Edward remained where he was, staring at the space where the liquefied dinner had been sitting. For the second time that day, he wondered if he could starve here. Being in no condition to hunt and having no energy to keep the rotten, ( Read more... )

[From up here.]

Shutting the door behind them, Peter sighed and tucked the syringe carefully into the pocket of his sweatpants. It wasn't the best fit, but it would do for the short time (at least, he hoped it was short) that they'd have to wait. In the end, he decided to move a little further away from the room, so that they wouldn't be overheard. Because honestly, a lot of this was starting to feel pretty fishy.

He glanced up at the flickering overhead lights, noticing that they were much less reliable out here than they'd been in the room. Then, he turned back to Claire and shrugged his shoulders. "So, what was that all about? Do you think it's possible that that Edward kid has some sort of ability?" The cold, hard skin, plus the fact that he'd almost seemed to respond to his thoughts... it all seemed to point to one thing ( ... )

All things considered, especially with the shock of the needle problems setting in, she let herself be led out rather compliantly. These days, that was a rarity. She stared fixedly on the door for a minute once they were in the hall, biting her lip stubbornly and willing herself to have superhearing to figure out what was going on in there. But, she didn't have superhearing, and there was no way of knowing, even if it had been any of her business. So, she slowly flicked her gaze up towards Peter, a frown pursing her lips ( ... )

While Peter could practically feel the annoyance that was radiating off of Claire like it was its own energy source, he was glad that she'd agreed to come out without much of a fuss. After all, they were all supposed to be on the same side, so getting into some argument because people wanted to keep secrets wasn't going to get them very far. In the end, it was Edward who would be suffering the most if he didn't accept their help, and so Peter hoped that he would be sensible -- because he wanted to make some sort of difference, as small as it was. And the sooner they could test Claire's blood, the better ( ... )

Oh, right. The ability dampening. It did make sense, but … it was still frustrating to know that with everything she'd shown Bella, her roommate hadn't felt the need to let her in on that before they got to Edward's room. There'd been plenty of time, and it wasn't as though Claire was going to jump at the chance to call him a freak -- but they needed to be prepared if they were going to do anything to help him. She couldn't stop fixating on it."I don't get it, either. Maybe she didn't want to tell us for him -- like it's his decision or something, you know?" Defending her when she was busy feeling betrayed was probably the closest to physical pain that Claire was going to get without the effects of whatever monster had been creeping around the second floor. Reminded, she took a shifty look around the hallway, suppressing a shudder. That wasn't something she wanted to remember ( ... )

At Claire's suggestion, Peter had to admit that it sounded feasible. He nodded as he thought it over. "That could be it. I mean, if it was me... I wouldn't want to tell anyone about what you could do without checking first, you know?" Considering how hard Claire had tried to keep it a secret, not to mention how protective her father was of her (even if he was no longer here, and hadn't been in a long while), it wasn't the sort of information Peter was just going to hand out to whoever asked ( ... )

The assurance that he wasn't looking to tell anyone not only reassured her that maybe Bella wasn't trying to deceive her, but it also reassured her that she could trust Peter -- this Peter, anyway. Even if the one further in the timeline had done nothing but disappoint her lately. She offered him a quickly quirked smile at it to show her appreciation, but let him continue without interruption.

Unfortunately, the smile dropped quickly when he voiced concerns over how badly a pen might hurt. Of course. He didn't know yet. She'd been spending so much energy trying to keep him from finding out that it hadn't occurred to her that he would be taking the necessary precautions for how things used to be. She shut her eyes, releasing a stressed sigh and letting her eyebrows knit together in distress as she tried to find the right way to put it ( ... )

Just that smile from Claire told Peter that she appreciated his caution, and let him know to do his best to keep it up even in the institute. While he didn't think that Claire would get into much trouble due to her ability here, there was also no real way of knowing that for certain. It would be better to play it safe, especially if that was what the girl wanted. He smiled back, but figured that no words needed to be said.

Though it seemed like there was something else that he'd said that had been very much the wrong thing. He wasn't sure what the girl meant at first, or what he'd done that had bothered her so much, but he did his best to be patient until she got all of the words out.

What she said -- and more than that, the way that she said it -- caused him to stare at her in shock for a moment as he let it process. "Not at all?" he asked. "When did that happen?" Some might have considered the inability to feel pain a good thing, but Claire obviously wasn't happy with it, and Peter also knew that there were some clear downsides ( ... )

Even though she'd expected the questions, and oh had she ever expected them, it was exactly why she'd been putting this off as long as possible, she couldn't help the surge of emotion that came with them. Talking about it was hard, harder still with Peter who had been so dismissive of her the first time. He'd been more worried about what he could and couldn't do without screwing things up than he was with if Claire was okay. The concern from this Peter was almost bewildering ( ... )

A week wasn't long at all, which made it even weirder that Claire hadn't brought it up with him before now. Maybe she'd been worried about the difference in time between them, or maybe she'd expected him to know until she'd figured out how far "back" he was from, and then had just forgotten to catch him up on what had happened to her recently. Peter realized that it might be worth considering just how much he should know about his future, but he definitely didn't want his niece to keep information from him because of that.

Well, she'd told him now, at least, though it seemed like even that was hard enough for the girl. Peter didn't know why the lack of pain was hitting her so hard, but maybe it was just another reminder of how different she was. The further away you got from normal, the more you felt like the word "freak" truly was applicable. Peter could understand that, even if he'd mainly embraced his powers. They didn't feel like as much of a gift when he could explodeThe question, of course, was how and why it had happened in ( ... )

When the door swung open, Claire immediately sniffed and brought her hands up to wipe beneath her eyes, just to be sure she hadn't actually let any tears fall. She took the moment while Venom's exit was providing distraction to clear her throat and straighten up. This wasn't the time to be whining. In fact, nothing about this institute even came close to making time for whining. So she just needed to suck it up and find a better way to deal ( ... )

Even if Claire said that she'd alert him if there was something on her mind, Peter could never be entirely sure. That was the problem with teenagers; they tended to bottle things up, either because they thought they were strong enough that they could deal with it on their own, or because they were embarrassed for some reason. Peter wanted to think that he and Claire were closer than that, but at the same time he knew that they had only been acquainted for a few months. It was longer for Claire, but still ( ... )

[Back from here.]The hallway was as empty as it had been earlier, which meant that the two of them were just left with the awkwardness of the situation they'd just escaped from to talk about. Peter could have brought up the blood, but there wasn't much to say about it just then and he doubted that Claire would want to hear it. She had just helped out two people who had betrayed her trust, after all ( ... )

The mention of Edward's potential pain dug at an emotional wound that she was sure Peter hadn't intended to poke at, but considering she'd already brought it up once tonight, it was hard to ignore. Would Edward feel the pain still? Claire couldn't -- not anymore, anyway. If it was a part of her ability, wouldn't it transfer with her blood? Of course, the very present possibility that it wasn't part of her ability at all and that Sylar had just broken her was there too ( ... )

It didn't seem like anyone had really planned that far ahead, but Peter couldn't really blame Bella and Claire for having Edward's well-being as their top priority. That put into further perspective how good of a friend Claire had been to Bella, and made Peter more upset about the other girl's behavior. He knew that he wasn't directly involved and should keep it that way, but it bothered him nonetheless, even if Bella might have the best reason in the world for her silence ( ... )
