Shutting the door behind them, Peter sighed and tucked the syringe carefully into the pocket of his sweatpants. It wasn't the best fit, but it would do for the short time (at least, he hoped it was short) that they'd have to wait. In the end, he decided to move a little further away from the room, so that they wouldn't be overheard. Because honestly, a lot of this was starting to feel pretty fishy.
He glanced up at the flickering overhead lights, noticing that they were much less reliable out here than they'd been in the room. Then, he turned back to Claire and shrugged his shoulders. "So, what was that all about? Do you think it's possible that that Edward kid has some sort of ability?" Unfortunately, the smile dropped quickly when he voiced concerns over how badly a pen might hurt. Of course. He didn't know yet. She'd been spending so much energy trying to keep him from finding out that it hadn't occurred to her that he would be taking the necessary precautions for how things used to be. Though it seemed like there was something else that he'd said that had been very much the wrong thing. He wasn't sure what the girl meant at first, or what he'd done that had bothered her so much, but he did his best to be patient until she got all of the words out.
What she said -- and more than that, the way that she said it -- caused him to stare at her in shock for a moment as he let it process. "Not at all?" he asked. "When did that happen?" Some might have considered the inability to feel pain a good thing, but Claire obviously wasn't happy with it, and Peter also knew that there were some clear downsides ( ... )

Well, she'd told him now, at least, though it seemed like even that was hard enough for the girl. Peter didn't know why the lack of pain was hitting her so hard, but maybe it was just another reminder of how different she was. The further away you got from normal, the more you felt like the word "freak" truly was applicable. Peter could understand that, even if he'd mainly embraced his powers.
