Night 51: F21-30 Hallway

Aug 27, 2010 17:31

The latest intercom announcement filled Aigis with a sense of dread. Aborting her attempt at writing in her journal, Aigis stood silent for a moment then paced to the closet to retrieve her baseball bat. She would normally have offered her roommate some assistance during her first night in the institute, but Kay had already expressed during ( Read more... )

After hearing the horrible announcement over the intercom, Amaterasu could not fake sleep any longer. She stepped out of her bedroom door, prepared to face the journey ahead. Something new was also held within her hand; a hard object that emitted light at the end (she felt foolish for not having noticed it before).

The goddess set out, retracing her steps from last night to find her way back to Honey's room.

Tonight was going to be interesting. Although she couldn't secure Battler's presence (not a huge loss, Erika thought), she was able to get a fourth person to accompany her and Momo anyway. It was a shame, but Erika had already quickly realized that whomever Battler was, he was not the game master of this board nor the territory lord. He, in other words, was useless. A fact Erika already knew and was able to apply quite easily. So, once she had finished scribbling down the intercom (with a bit of interest; was this a mission to rescue Jill?), Erika gathered her usual things and went out the door.

Tonight was going to be very interesting.

No time to waste, Elaine thought in a hazy panic. She had conked right out at dinner by accident, and even now, she could feel the continued urge to sleep attacking her brain as she forced herself to get moving. The only thing that had woken her back up at all was the static of Landel's intercom message. Any later than that, and she would have run the risk of being late for her appointment.

Or possibly of not waking up ever again. She moved as quickly as she could force her arms and legs to go, gathering her torch and her pillowcase full of metal pipes with a fervour that suggested a woman trying to outrun her own body. Her mind swam with clouded thoughts, fighting to drive her straight back to bed, but somehow, she was able to resist long enough to get to the door. For extra measure, she closed it behind her - as if one more layer between herself and the bed would convince The Drowsiness™ (yes, it was getting serious enough to warrant a trademark and official capital letters and everything) to just roll over and give up on her ( ... )

[Aaand skidding in from here.]

Guybrush stopped as a flashlight turned in his direction, blinding him for only a second before he caught sight of the person on the other side. "E- Elaine," he said, trying to catch his breath (running around: 3; Guybrush: 0). "Good to see you here... out and... you know... going out. Glad I caught you... before you got far."

He bent over, taking several deep breaths. Why did he suddenly feel like he was dating again, his tongue twisted in knots? It was probably the run and his out-of-breath state. Or maybe the nervousness was coming from the fact that his future was still open for ruining just by talking to her.

He was willing to take that risk for even a moment with her, even if she wasn't exactly the wife he'd left behind. He wasn't sure when he'd make it back to his own Elaine as it was.

He leaned on the wall, attempting to be casual. "So, where are we headed?"

"Guybrush?" Had she really taken that long to get moving that he was here already? Even with all that effort, and still ( ... )

"Toymaker?" Guybrush asked mid-wheeze. His eyes trailed to the left as he thought about it. Oh right, something on the board she'd responded to. He hadn't really paid attention, other than seeing it was her writing and fantasizing that she was writing love notes to- wow, he really needed to find some hobbies. Wife-withdrawal was hitting him much like a man shot from a cannon would hit a wooden post while wearing a pot on his head: it hurt all over, left his ears ringing and his brain rattling, and had him questioning everything he'd ever known (though it wasn't yet to the point where he thought his name was Bobbin and Elaine might be his mother).

... Not that Guybrush was going to tell Stanley any of that. The last thing he needed was the attorney breathing down his neck, reminding him that restraining orders were written for a reason and Brian Moriarty had unhealthy habits involving swans that weren't conducive to society, etc ( ... )

Leela hadn't gotten very far the night before, and was determined to make it off the hospital grounds, at the very least. If they weren't in some crazy simulation, she might be able to get to civilization, or what passed for it, and get some help. And if they were, maybe she'd find a glitch in it. In Leela's experience, crazy virtual realities were almost always buggy in one way or another.

Elaine was zonked out, and Leela didn't bother her, figuring she needed the rest. She put her boots on, hoping against hope that kicking something's butt would be called for tonight, and took the radio and the flashlight. She'd listened with alarm to the announcement that seemed to mean they had one of Marc's comrades in custody. She and Erika hadn't gotten as far as the (presumably roguishly handsome) rebel's hideout. Maybe tonight, she thought as she set off, she'd have better luck.

Ema didn't like the sounds of that last announcement at all. As utterly useless as Jill had been in her radio broadcasts, she didn't deserve to become the captive of a madman. Being a regular prisoner in the institute was bad enough; she couldn't even begin to imagine the horrors that awaited a woman who was the head doctor's personal prisoner.

Part of her really, really wanted to start up a rescue mission, but she knew that it would be a terrible idea. One, she didn't know where the doctor's office even was. Two, she lacked any sort of equipment that would be necessary for the rescue part of the endeavor. Three, she was still nightblind. Scientifically speaking, it was difficult to rescue someone that you couldn't clearly see; knowing how Ema's luck had been in the institute so far, Ema would end up dragging out a moose head on the wall or something. Hopefully Mr. Javert and the rest of Search and Rescue would have that covered. They were more qualified than she was ( ... )

[from here, only a couple of tens of days late! 8D;;; ]

Twenty-eight, Ema had said? Right up the hall from Kay, good! She wouldn't get even later from getting lost, at least.

Flashlight shining in Kay's hand, she knocked and asked, "Hey, Ema, you there?"

It seemed like ages before Kay finally arrived, and Ema had to admit she was starting to really worry about the other girl. Any number of horrible things could have happened en route--monsters, other patients, some game the head doctor was playing with them. If it weren't for the fact that she didn't feel comfortable traveling alone (her night vision was no better, and probably would never improve on its own), Ema would have gone out looking for her.

Therefore, it was no small amount of relief Ema felt when Kay knocked on her door and called in.

"I'm still here! Come on in!"

Awesome! Kay opened the door, lowering her flashlight a little so she didn't, like, accidentally glare it into Ema's eyes, and grinned at the other girl. "Sorry I'm late, I sort of fell asleep after dinner." She had the grace to look embarrassed about that for about half a second. "But I'm here now! One Kay Faraday, at your service."

She did a showy, over-dramatic bow, like a great thief ought to, and grinned at Ema some more.
