Day 51: Lunch

Aug 14, 2010 16:35

Edward was glad to wake up to a period of respite. While he had been conscious during breakfast, he'd requested to remain in his room for extra "sleep", which had consisted waiting until the room was vacated to ingest the vial of Venom's blood. The vampire had lost his chance last night, but that might have been for the better; this way he wasn't ( Read more... )

All things considered, that had been the most interesting conversation Harvey had ever carried on in a communal shower. He was both suspicious of and intrigued by Gant, but more than that, he couldn't help remaining stuck on the fact that there were so many patients here who had a connection to law enforcement. It was just one after another, and more kept coming in ( ... )

Harvey had been in the middle of mentally composing the note he was going to put up on the bulletin, and it was that distraction that caused him to only be vaguely aware of someone sitting near him at first. When he finally did drag himself out of his thoughts and glance over, he saw one of the last people he would have expected ( ... )

It was only lunchtime? That was strange, it felt like the day had already lasted far longer, but maybe that was just because of the weirdness of this place in general. After all, where else could she talk to someone who claimed to be a non-human in a human body who wasn't some kind of weird monster out to destroy the earth? According to him, at least, so she'd probably have to hold her judgment in the matter until she saw how he actually behaved ( ... )

Sometimes the days were better than the nights. Junpei decided this as he loaded up his burger with ketchup, mustard and relish. For one, the burgers at this place were almost as good as Wild Duck Burgers'. After that, there was the fact that during the day there were no creepy elongated arms with evil beady eyes attached to them trying to make him the star of the latest hentai craze. What was it with this place at night and its need to stock up on hentai creatures? At least he hadn't run into any tentacle monsters. Yet.

...and he so should not have thought that. It's like the walls have ears and they could hear his thoughts. He really should learn how to do that whole clear-the-mind thing. Tabular Rosa or something like that. Probably not.

All that taken into consideration, the best thing that made the day better than the night was the chance to talk to hot chicks without wondering when something was going to try to eat them. Because then he'd have to be prepared to save her from the monsters, being all manly, and really ( ... )

Even though she'd found a nice, empty table away from all the weirdos, someone had decided to take it upon himself to join her anyway. Minako glanced up from her veggie burger (verdict: nowhere near as nice as a real burger but she needed some exercise before indulging in actual greasy meat) and blinked at the guy took the seat across the table. Teenager, probably about her age. Seemed pretty normal, from what she could see.

"Global warming?" she echoed with a faintly quizzical air, lowering the half-finished burger to her plate again. "I don't think anyone's ever talked to me about it before. Why?"

For the most part, Junpei was pretty normal. In fact, he might be one of the most normal guys in this insane place aside from that whole sorta-monster thing living in his head that lets him burninate things. That he has to shoot himself in the head to access. Perfectly normal.

He grinned when the chick fell right into the line, responding as he had hoped. Not many did when he used that line, so it was always a treat when they did.

"Cause you're smokin' hot, babe." Which never did sound as good coming out of his mouth as it did in his head. Still, the grin on his face was earnest. "I'm Junpei."

Welp. Snow was right about one thing: Asking questions and getting info definitely wasn't his thing. Here it was, mid-day, and he still hadn't figured out what was really going on around here. Well... He guessed it didn't really matter either way. One thing doesn't work, you just move on to the next is all. If asking around didn't work, he'd just have to go with his instincts! When in doubt, a man goes with his gut! And Snow's gut told him... he was hungry.

Erm, wait. That didn't really help. ...I mean, he was kinda starving, yeah, but ( ... )

Spending the morning with tall, dark, and grumpy in the sun room hadn't been nearly as productive as Izaya had hoped. He'd managed to pick up a few notes about Kurogane's behavior, but... Well, no matter. The bulletin board had proved amusement enough, and another stop at improved his mood tremendously. He hummed tunelessly as he followed the nurse to the cafeteria once more.

The nurse positively insisted that he try the hamburgers, so he humored her and took one, along with a small side of fries. Lunch in hand, it was time to find something to do to pass the time.

Unfortunately, there wasn't much to distinguish one patient from the other aside from looks; he spotted Castiel again, sitting with a pile of hamburgers, but he couldn't put names with any other faces that were present just yet. If he didn't have an advantage in choosing who to sit with, he wouldn't choose at all. He would select at random ( ... )

Man, he'd never had anything like these yellow things before, but they weren't bad at all! Different, sure, but in a good way. Throw these things on the menu in the cafe back home and they'd be a hit for sure. He'd have to find out what they were called before he got outta here. Hope the meat's as good as these things.

He'd picked up the piece of bread hiding the meat under it to set aside when a voice piped up across the table. One of the other refugees, looked like. No one he recognized, but hey. Snow spread a huge, welcoming grin, very obviously happy someone wanted to join him for lunch. Least the people in here weren't wary of each other. And it sure beat eating alone.

"Nope! 'S all yours," he said jovially, waving the bread in a "go ahead" sort of gesture. This is the part where he should have gone back to the food or something, but that weird mess on the meat kept him from going at it off the bat. Guess they cover it with bread since it looked nicer that way. ...Probably tasted better than it looked. Um. Anyway.

A friendly, exuberant reaction, was it? That was quite the opposite of the brusque reproach he'd gotten from the same question before. If Kurogane had been 'tails' in a hypothetical flip of a coin, this man was more like 'heads'.

"Thanks." Izaya set his tray down on the table and took a seat. "I'm Orihara Izaya," he said once situated, deciding that it wouldn't hurt to get introductions out of the way. His name was free information in this circumstance, anyway, and the other man's attitude hadn't presented him with any immediate reason to withhold it. Giving it might make the other more open to questioning, anyway.

"Have you been here long?" he asked after a pause; opening questioning. How long the man had been here would effect what direction he should go.

Izaya picked up the burger to take a bite.

The shower (during which Indy didn’t talk to anybody; there were limits on times even he wanted to gather information in a place like this) was refreshing, and when the shift changed, a rebandaged and clean-shaven Indiana Jones made his way to the cafeteria and found himself a hamburger and a seat by himself. The bulletin board exchanges had cleared up most of the loose ends from last night (everyone was all right; no one had gotten anywhere; clear enough, although that latter point raised the question of why the hell not), but he was still hoping to run across some of the participants in the botched expedition. If only to confirm that he wasn’t going crazy ( ... )

Sitting down with Agatha for a bit had been good for Scott. For one, it reminded him that yes, ladyparts as they existed on actual ladies were not scary or out to get him. For another, the talk had just been kind of nice and casual. Scott felt like he didn't get nearly enough of that kind of talk in Landel's. Even with the people he considered his new friends, a lot of their talk inevitably just ended up being about escape plans and terrible nights and such. Not that he thought they ought to just stop trying to escape, but still. When could they all just stop, sit down, hang out, and shoot the breeze like normal people, he wondered?

Probably not today, at least, Scott thought with some disappointment when he spotted the (now-shaven) face of Indiana Jones nearby in the cafeteria. He was pretty sure that after a night like theirs, now probably wouldn't be the best of times to start swapping funny stories from home or complaining about the state of comic-book-to-movie adaptations nowadays. Still, he wasn't about to avoid the guy; ( ... )

As luck would have it--and "lucky" was a novel way of describing any encounter with Scott Pilgrim, but damn if Indy didn't find himself thinking of it in those terms anyway--Pilgrim came over and set his tray down across the table, followed a few seconds later by Peter Parker. Indy took a big bite of hamburger and tried to glance at them over it without being too obvious. Looked like they were both back to normal, just as advertised. It also looked like they were both a touch shy about it--not that Indy could say he blamed them. If he'd been turned into a woman, he might be inclined to be red about the ears the next day too ( ... )

Soma supposed she should actually open her journal for the first time ever and make a note of the date. For the first time in her life, she had managed to have a conversation with E-0057 that hadn't ended with either of them bleeding, infuriated, or contemplating their own existences. Irritating as he was, she had to admit to herself that this morning's meeting had actually been informative. And it was reassuring to know that at least she wasn't the only one here from her world ( ... )

So she'd managed to sleep through another night. Meche couldn't say she was impressed with herself when she woke up. At least it didn't seem like she'd missed too much--there was talk on the bulletin board about doing something with Arts and Crafts, but she didn't want to weigh in on that until she'd had a chance to discuss it with Senna--but still, it was frustrating to have wasted the night again like that. She didn't really do much with the morning, either; just had a quiet breakfast and a long shower. At least that went some distance toward reminding her that she was actually in the Land of the Living ( ... )

Soma offered a slight smile back at the sight of Meche. It was good to know she was all right, even if she'd slept in, too. They could be embarrassed about it together.

"Quiet," she said, though for once she couldn't complain. Non-quiet conversations with E-0057 tended to end in sedation. "How have you been?"

Meche nodded at that. A quiet morning was a good one, especially in here. "Pretty well, aside from oversleeping," she answered, deliberately keeping her tone light. "Guess you didn't end up going out last night either, eh?" From Soma's notes, it hadn't sounded like it. Meche realized suddenly that she hadn't seen Alita or Hokuto around lately, either, not since they'd been out with Alita the other night. Were they all sleeping more lately?

"Oh, I never answered your question about whether I have plans for tonight, did I?" she asked. "I'm not sure, honestly. It looks like we're going to have Arts and Crafts assignments starting up again before long, though."
