Night 50: Entry Room

Jul 14, 2010 18:43

[From here.]As he entered, Castiel confirmed that this room, unlike the one he'd checked before, was empty. That was preferable; the less people he needed to deal with, the faster he could find what he was looking for. What the room had instead was a plethora of doors. The one to the right most likely led into the room he'd previously checked, but ( Read more... )

Not American, but living in America. Izaya could be satisfied with that answer, since it was an answer. He wondered where Castiel was from originally, but decided not to ask yet. Any answer he'd gotten thus far from the man was brief and direct; if he asked Castiel to elaborate too much, he might realize that Izaya was prying rather than just making small talk.

He moved aside to let Castiel through the door, and then followed.

Izaya didn't see much of anything new once he was inside the room, but there were two more doors, situated in corners he hadn't been able to see from the hall. The double doors Castiel was heading for seemed the mostly likely candidates to lead outside, but he'd comply with the request to check the others. After all, if the double doors didn't lead out, they would need to go somewhere else ( ... )

Castiel could have taken some time to consider why someone this boy's age knew how to pick locks, but in the end it was his use that mattered to him more than his background. Unless it turned out that he was somehow related to the oncoming war, that is, but that seemed unlikely thus far. There had to be reason that the boy had ended up here, and he knew that, but the most likely explanation seemed to be that he was a hostage ( ... )

Izaya gave the room on the other side of the door one last sweep with the light before writing it off as of no further interest. He had caught sight of a door on the far side of the room, but based on its position, it probably just led back into the hall from before ( ... )

If the lock-picking didn't work, then Castiel was fully prepared to use a more forceful method. The only reason he was hesitating was due to the fact that making that much noise could easily call the attention of their captors. There was a large chance that they were already being tracked, but on the off chance that they'd managed to slip out of notice, it was best to play it safe. Provided it didn't expend too much time, at least ( ... )

A first scan of the room revealed nothing. Good. "It's clear for now," he informed the other two. "I suggest we move quickly nonetheless." There was no point in hanging around to find out whether someone listening to them went in for dramatic irony.

"You mean other patients are actually armed and ordered keep guard here?" Gant looked over to Niikura as he asked, surprised Recluse hadn't denied the possibility. This place seemed crazier by the minute. "If you don't mind me saying, it just sounds a little far-fetched. Who could be trusted enough to guard against their fellow in-mates?" Really, why would anyone agree to help this place ( ... )

"Aye, it's true," Niikura said with a small shrug. "First night I was here, I ran into one of 'em. Pirate guy named Usopp - attacked me with this crazy-ass slingshot that nearly burnt my eyebrows off." He laughed harshly. "Turns out the docs do that sometimes, brainwash people in guardin' this place and attackin' anyone that comes near 'em. I think it's random selection. Ya don't seem to get anythin' out of it, though."

It would have been nice if people got some sort of compensation for doing the guards' job for them the occasional night, really. It would also be a PR nightmare, trying to explain the mysterious costs on the payroll--assuming there was a PR person for this place.

He took a quick look around the room for his own sake. "Lucky us," Niikura muttered. Nothing too exciting yet, but maybe that was a good thing.

Recluse started across the room, keeping a careful eye on the doors to the side rooms, as well as the ceiling. Too many years of attempted ambushes had gotten rid of the habit of discounting anywhere as a potential direction from which to attack from.

"He speaks the truth," he added, testing one of the doors. To his surprise, it actually moved. Someone had already been through here. "Pray it never happens to me."

Once inside the next room, LeChuck replied, reproachfully, "And if anyone's singin' fiddle-dee-dee, it'd be Threepwood. I be the kind of pirate that rapes, pillages, and then burns the survivors for fun," he added, with an enthusiastic chuckle.

"Yeah, he kind of seemed like the sissy type of pirate. Kind of scrawny, dorky hair...if he was a captain, his nickname would probably 'goat beard.'" Porky shrugged, shaking his head, "Though I have to admit, he did have a pretty sharp mind when it came to insults. I think I topped his comebacks, though. Have you ever insult sword...uh, insult swordfought?"

The second part of LeChuck's snide remark caught Porky's ear, though. In all of his time spent at the institute, he had met a wide variety of different people from many walks of life. This was the first person that he had met, however, that actually seemed villainous. Oh, sure. There had been other people that were undoubtedly evil, but no one that was truly nasty"I've never been one for rape, myself," Porky began, glancing over to his torch, "But if there's one thing I enjoy, it's a good inferno! You should've seen the Sunny Forest when I was firebombing it! The look on the villagers' faces as their beloved grove burnt to the ground...priceless! And as for dealing with the ( ... )

LeChuck genuinely laughed at Porky's response. He'd been worried about his child-like appearance, but with all he knew about voodoo, it was entirely possible that this was an adult that looked young. It seemed his patience paid off... if Porky was a young kid, he was LeChuck's kind of kid.

"Oh, I haven't been doin' much o' that since I set my sights on a particular lovely lass, but it be the principle of the thing. And I suppose ye don't know much of the dark arts, do ye? Who said I couldn't burn the survivors and then put them to work?" He grinned slyly - nothing like having your cake and slaughtering it in front of its family too.

"And Thriftweed... I'd been thinking o' working with him. He has a way of figuring himself outta these weird situations. But I would hardly pass up a chance to make him suffer! He's ruined my plans more times than I can remember.

"Oh, but killing people only to bring them back to life to enslave them is such a waste!" Porky said in mock horror, "I only resurrect people if I'm going to physically augment their body with robotic limbs and whatnot. There's nothing more satisfying than killing off a few members of a village, making them my robot slaves, and then commanding them to kill off their horrified family members! Such is the power..." Porky made a fist with his free hand and thrust it out menacingly as he shouted, "Of science! You can keep your black magic! I'll take the reliability and durable power of circuits and fuses any day ( ... )

Even though Haseo felt quite a bit of relief in finding that the door led to where it was supposed to this time, his first priority in going through it was definitely to check for danger. It was an odd feeling, to find something going as planned strange, but in the end, the only thing that was out of the ordinary was the presence of two other patients- the first they'd seen since the lights went out. There were no obvious signs of monsters... or the blue flames that would indicate the arrival of another friend in particular.

Given his current state though, the Adept Rogue was far from trusting. He merely gave the other patients a long, hard look before turning back again, his crimson eyes aimed towards the floor in search of further evidence for unexplained flora remnants. Come to think of it, an obvious trail leading from where they'd been might not be such a good idea...

This time, there weren't any sudden bursts of flower petals, the tide of them stopping the minute Endrance had stepped out of that waiting room. There was a shared sense of relief that the door didn't lead to anywhere strange, but mixed with it was a bit of sadness. He hadn't said as much, but if they had wound up back in The World, just for a while...that wouldn't have been so bad, would it? At least he didn't think so...

"Haseo...do you feel anything strange? Like that night...I don't sense anything," he said, in a hushed voice, one that shouldn't carry to the others in the area.

The appearance of those blue flames would have been a bad thing, even if he felt more prepared than he had that first night. An actual sword - a sword that was from the same place as that strange boy wearing Kite's appearance - was far better than a pipe, in his case, and Haseo himself was far better armed than he had been ( ... )

Haseo didn't notice anything, from their own influence or otherwise. "No," he answered, quiet but harsh, and shook his head enough to be seen even if the light on him was dim. He frowned- Endrance seemed to have a better handle on the sensing thing anyway, since the few times Haseo thought he might have done the same, he had simply acted on it rather than recognizing what it might have been until much later. He didn't need confirmation to know what Endrance was talking about, though.

"I wonder... if they actually control that guy," the Rogue asked, mostly to himself. He couldn't help but think back to the woman who claimed to have met Azure Kite on a different night, her post to the board about Aura of all things afterward, and the unhelpful meeting with her that Haseo had subsequently stumbled into. He realized he should probably be looking into that more, but once again, wasn't certain where he was supposed to start.

He already knew the files were sorted by family name, which meant that his and Endrance's should be in the second ( ... )

For once, it seemed there was no guardian at the doors. Renamon paused, glancing into the corners of the room, to see nothing. Strange. Still, she wouldn't question fortune. She couldn't remember, however. If the last time she had came here had been with Dairine and Toph. She exhaled slowly, releasing the sensation of loss. Now was not the time to dwell on that.

Hey, he'd never been here before. Beelzemon looked around the room curiously, but... there wasn't really anything interesting, apart from those doors at the other end.

"So we gonna--You okay?" Since, you know, it was hard to tell with Renamon, especially know that her face was completely different.

Had she been that obvious or had Beelzemon only picked up on the differences in the person that he knew? She straightened, shadowing her hesitance with the ruse of checking the room again. Nothing, then. "I'm fine," she answered, less neutrally than she wanted. "Thank you."
