Night 50: F11-F20 Hallway

[F18→Hallway]

The indignation Natalia had felt following her conversation with Anise had faded, minutely, during dinner. It returned with a vengeance as that man's voice disturbed the air. How could he? What nerve, what absolute unfathomable gall to lie throughout the day, then speak so frankly when night fell. Why pretend at all? Why paint an ( Read more... )

Nightfall, finally. Well, they'd see what Marc came up with. For that, this meant taking the radio. Packing that in her mesh bag along with the baseball bat, Hime left the spoils of last night in the closet, setting her knife and flashlight on the desk. First though, was investigating Landel's announcement. In the drawer of her desk, next to the two-way radio was the ring he'd mentioned. Such a juxtaposition - a magical artifact from the mad doctor next to a far more trustworthy mundane item from the resistance.

Well, she'd use either to her advantage. Right now, the radio.

Clicking her on, she decided to check in on her cohort.

[And finished talking from here]

Plans set, Hime gathered her things - radios and bat in the mesh bag she'd tied into something of a backpack slung across her back, ring on her finger - not that she'd want back into Doyleton, but Landel had hinted there might be other uses - knife in one hand and flashlight in the other, she was ready to set out.

God, it was such a relief for Elle to be free of her roommate. What was that girl's deal, anyway? She didn't know, and she certainly didn't care. Let Claire sort her own issues out. Now that the door was unlocked and the hall was free of nurses, Elle was free to roam the halls and figure out what was really going on.

Didn't that Yukari girl say something about monsters...?

Whatever. Elle could handle it. She noticed the other people passing her by in the hall had flashlights, and wondered if she should turn back to her room to get one. ... Nah. It might mean going back and seeing Claire again. Forget that. Maybe she'd run into someone she could con into sharing a flashlight with. That could be nice.

The announcement had sent her into a dizzying frenzy. Talk of hidden rings and unusual places, how the door swung open so easily for her roommate. The other woman was gone now, but Claire was in the room and confused beyond all words ( ... )

What were the odds that Ema would stay put tonight? Scratch that; what were the odds that Ema had dozed off during dinner, as that was the only thing that would keep her in her room? It didn't matter what her physical state was -- a fact which meant Lana could consciously avoid thinking further on the matter -- she would be heading out.

By the time the Head Doctor's evening announcement came on, she was pacing the room, her coat on, and everything else she'd need stacked neatly on her desk.

She did pause for one thing: she pulled the drawer out and set it on top of the desk to quickly sweep over it with the flashlight. Nothing. Just as well; Ema would want to experiment, and while the final room they'd found themselves in had been innocuous enough. Trusting Landel's largess was a fool's errand.

Like the one she was embarking on now, but Ema had given her no choice.

Making it to Ruby's room took just another five minutes of navigating the now familiar halls. Sam walked down the length of the hall without scanning the door for the number, stopped in front of F16. He glanced over his shoulder to make sure nothing was lurking behind him. Force of habit, really. His limited vision with the flashlight came up with nothing suspicious. So far.

He rapped on the door with the back of his hand. "It's me."

Without waiting for an answer, he opened the door. This was Ruby, after all. He'd shared things with her he never thought he'd share with anyone, things he didn't even think he had to share in the first place. Common courtesy ceased to be much of an issue between them.

Stepping inside, he lightly tossed her the knife, watched it spin across the short distance. She wouldn't cut herself catching it, he knew. There were no demons around for the knife to have the same value it did before, but if nothing else, she'd have a familiar weapon. He got what that was like.

"Merry Christmas."

Ruby watched the knife arc across the ten or so feet that separated her from Sam, catching it with practiced ease. This was…not what she was expecting. It was her knife. She traced the etching on the blade, fingers remembering every symbol because she was the one that had put them there in the first place. Now where had Sam gotten something like this? The butterfly knife was one thing, but this was something else entirely. This knife was truly unique; there wasn’t another one like it in the world. She’d made very sure of that when she made it. So how had he found it? As far as Ruby could tell, they were as far from being in Kansas as it was possible to be without going either downstairs or up. One-of-a-kind demon-killing knives imbued with black magic didn’t just pop up randomly ( ... )

For a moment, Sam was tempted to tell her he got it out of the trunk of the Impala and leave it at that, but he didn't have time to beat around the bush right now.

He shut the door and leaned against it. Hopefully, no one was gonna open it because that would be a pretty crappy way to earn a bruise.

"Remember all of those fun house doors last night?" he said. "Yeah, well, one of them sent me back to Pontiac. Right by Dean's grave. Anyway, everything was there, the Impala, weapons in the trunk..." He glanced up. "A demon."

He had a feeling Ruby would want to know that. She was the one who'd told him that there were no demons here, after all. Not that he thought she'd lied to him; everything pointed to her simply not having sensed it, at least not at the time. Maybe the demon had been flown in from another dimension, who the hell knew at this point. In the grand scheme of things, manipulating a single demon wasn't difficult. A little black magic easily did the trick ( ... )

“Here.” Ruby produced the butterfly knife and handed it back to Sam. With the familiar weight of her own knife back in her hand, she didn’t need anything else. She went back to her bed and sat on it, frowning at Sam’s explanation ( ... )

Utena shut the door to Himemiya's room quietly, breathing a soft sigh if relief. At least she knew where the other girl was tonight. Before leaving, she had left a note on Himemiya's desk wishing the girl a good night's sleep and telling her not to worry about coming out to find her. Even if Himemiya hadn't dealt with any portal doors the night before, Utena felt the girl deserved to catch up on sleep, like a normal person.

"All right, then: time for something that's not normal," Utena murmured to herself, fishing the strange ring out of her jacket pocket. The metal was cold in the palm of her hand, and the red jewel glinted temptingly under the glow of her flashlight. She could go straight back to that ballroom if it really worked. Those imposing doors were hiding something, and Utena wanted to know what. She still couldn't make herself put it on, though. Never mind that it was a present from Martin Landel; having another ring on while still wearing the ring from her prince felt like some kind of betrayal, shady benefactor or no. ( ... )
