[F18→Hallway]
The indignation Natalia had felt following her conversation with Anise had faded, minutely, during dinner. It returned with a vengeance as that man's voice disturbed the air. How could he? What nerve, what absolute unfathomable gall to lie throughout the day, then speak so frankly when night fell. Why pretend at all? Why paint an

Well, she'd use either to her advantage. Right now, the radio.
Clicking her on, she decided to check in on her cohort.

Plans set, Hime gathered her things - radios and bat in the mesh bag she'd tied into something of a backpack slung across her back, ring on her finger - not that she'd want back into Doyleton, but Landel had hinted there might be other uses - knife in one hand and flashlight in the other, she was ready to set out.

Didn't that Yukari girl say something about monsters...?
Whatever. Elle could handle it. She noticed the other people passing her by in the hall had flashlights, and wondered if she should turn back to her room to get one. ... Nah. It might mean going back and seeing Claire again. Forget that. Maybe she'd run into someone she could con into sharing a flashlight with. That could be nice.

By the time the Head Doctor's evening announcement came on, she was pacing the room, her coat on, and everything else she'd need stacked neatly on her desk.
She did pause for one thing: she pulled the drawer out and set it on top of the desk to quickly sweep over it with the flashlight. Nothing. Just as well; Ema would want to experiment, and while the final room they'd found themselves in had been innocuous enough. Trusting Landel's largess was a fool's errand.
Like the one she was embarking on now, but Ema had given her no choice.

Making it to Ruby's room took just another five minutes of navigating the now familiar halls. Sam walked down the length of the hall without scanning the door for the number, stopped in front of F16. He glanced over his shoulder to make sure nothing was lurking behind him. Force of habit, really. His limited vision with the flashlight came up with nothing suspicious. So far.
He rapped on the door with the back of his hand. "It's me."
Without waiting for an answer, he opened the door. This was Ruby, after all. He'd shared things with her he never thought he'd share with anyone, things he didn't even think he had to share in the first place. Common courtesy ceased to be much of an issue between them.
Stepping inside, he lightly tossed her the knife, watched it spin across the short distance. She wouldn't cut herself catching it, he knew. There were no demons around for the knife to have the same value it did before, but if nothing else, she'd have a familiar weapon. He got what that was like.
"Merry Christmas."

He shut the door and leaned against it. Hopefully, no one was gonna open it because that would be a pretty crappy way to earn a bruise.
"Remember all of those fun house doors last night?" he said. "Yeah, well, one of them sent me back to Pontiac. Right by Dean's grave. Anyway, everything was there, the Impala, weapons in the trunk..." He glanced up. "A demon."
He had a feeling Ruby would want to know that. She was the one who'd told him that there were no demons here, after all. Not that he thought she'd lied to him; everything pointed to her simply not having sensed it, at least not at the time. Maybe the demon had been flown in from another dimension, who the hell knew at this point. In the grand scheme of things, manipulating a single demon wasn't difficult. A little black magic easily did the trick ( ... )

"All right, then: time for something that's not normal," Utena murmured to herself, fishing the strange ring out of her jacket pocket. The metal was cold in the palm of her hand, and the red jewel glinted temptingly under the glow of her flashlight. She could go straight back to that ballroom if it really worked. Those imposing doors were hiding something, and Utena wanted to know what. She still couldn't make herself put it on, though. Never mind that it was a present from Martin Landel; having another ring on while still wearing the ring from her prince felt like some kind of betrayal, shady benefactor or no. ( ... )
