Day 50: Patient Library (4th Shift)

Jun 27, 2010 21:50

Sakura had mentioned a library on the second floor, but there was one on the first floor, wasn't there? It was for the patients, sure, but that didn't mean there wouldn't be any useful books. Not that he knew for certain, since every time Hanatarou had been in there previously it hadn't been to pay a lot of attention to the reading material ( Read more... )

Sticking around to watch King Kong yet again didn't seem like Peter's idea of a fun time (even if he'd barely paid attention the first time around), and so he chose to head into the library for the last shift of the day. It seemed like he really had avoided seeing visitors this time around, which was probably for the best ( ... )

None of these books looked anything like what he wanted, but maybe it would be worth looking at one of them anyway? It wasn't as though Hanatarou had any other plans for the afternoon, so he reached out, running his fingertips along the books for a moment before pausing on one and starting to pull it out. At the sound of his name and approaching footsteps, though, he froze in mid-reach and glanced over toward the source.

"Should I not be here?" he automatically blurted out, wondering if maybe he'd somehow ended up in the wrong place. Although the nurse had left him here, so it couldn't be that he wasn't allowed or anything. And... oh. Oh right, that was Peter from the paramedic group and, right. He dredged up a smile and pushed the book back into place. "I mean, er... hello?"

It looked like he'd taken the kid by surprise. Peter hadn't thought he'd been all that loud, but maybe the boy had just been distracted by the books he was looking at. He sent Hanatarou an apologetic smile and leaned against a nearby shelf. As expected, a cursory glance at the nearby books showed him nothing but poetry collections and Shakespeare. Which was fine, but they couldn't exactly get out of here by reciting sonnets.

"No, I didn't mean it that way," he said with a shake of his head. "I was just wondering what you were up to." Which didn't seem to be much. Hopefully they could talk over plans for the coming night, then. And maybe go over what had happened last night. Peter had barely gotten to talk to anyone about it, as running into Claire and Spock had been pretty distracting ( ... )

"Oh! Well, Sakura-san told me that there was a library with medical books upstairs, and I thought maybe there might be some of those books... down here. Too." Hanatarou relaxed slightly, making a vague gesture toward the shelves around him. "I don't see anything like that, though." Unless Peter had maybe seen something, but if he had found something interesting he wouldn't be over talking to Hanatarou, now would he?

Last night, though-- he'd been trying to get supplies, too? And if Peter had run into the same thing with the doors, which seemed pretty likely, it had to have been as difficult as Hanatarou's expedition to upstairs had been. "Oh, we ended up somewhere with... something. I'm not sure what we got, though, because someone else had the bag and I haven't seen it yet." Hopefully something good. Hopefully. "But mostly we just saw... offices."

[for BattlerAfter spending the last shift in the Sun Room with that ridiculous movie playing in the background, all Franziska wanted was some peace and quiet. She'd discussed her plans for the evening with Gumshoe and now all that remained was gathering her case together and hoping that last bit of evidence fit where it needed to fit. After a brief stop in her room for her journal (she'd left it there in her haste of the morning), Franziska made her way to the Patient Library and was pleased to see there were only two other people in here. They were talking quietly between themselves so Franziska moved to the other side of the room and commandeered a cushy seat so she could get to work ( ... )

Shoot for the eye of a robot.

Oh, and run. Running was totally a strategic thing - shit, he'd done it plenty of times himself - but hoping someone didn't get accidentally shot in the process wasn't exactly The Art of War. Kinda up there with crossing fingers or clapping for Tinkerbell. Dean wasn't too jazzed about the Doctor's plan of attack. More like non-attack. Too much banking on sheer luck, for starters, and the whole part where the name of the game was to not gank the Dalek wasn't sitting well with him. Unfortunately, the Doctor was the guy with the most experience with these things and Dean wasn't so sure he could call the shots on this one. The regular monsters, sure. The line ended at flying death machines ( ... )

Despite the dimmed lights and the constant sound from the film that filled the room, Spock had not allowed such minor details to deter him from perusing through the bulletin board's notes. It appeared certain individuals were attempting to compile a reliable directory consisting of club names, officers and contact information for newer patients to utilize should they wish. While the effort was an admirable one, Spock was uncertain of how successful they would be. The censorship enacted by the staff was just one hurdle they would need to overcome. Apathy and mistrust among other patients were another problem, as well as the fact that the turn-over rate among patients brought in appeared somewhat high ( ... )

Dean started at the voice behind him, wheeling around.

Jesus, Spock could sneak up on a guy.

He tried to remember if he was that ninja in the old school series and realized it'd been way too long since he'd actually seen an episode to remember. Dean's hand dropped from the book he'd been checking out. First the whole thing with the Doctor and the Daleks, and now he was running into Spock. It was too weird to be a coincidence, except he was sure that unlike the Doctor, "Spock" here could be explained. It was more than a stretch to assume while they were at it that Star Trek was real. If that was the case, then Dean supposed he better gear up for when Disney was a bunch of true life documentaries ( ... )

Spock had not intended to startle Brian, though judging by the way the abrupt manner he'd turned to look at him, it was apparent he had done just that. He recalled the first time he had spoken to Alkaid in the library, and the accusatory manner in which she had spoken to him after he'd approached her. Typically, this was not an issue Spock encountered often outside of Landel's, though it made him wonder how else one would announce their presence, if not by speaking. After all, it seemed odd to make more noise than necessary when walking simply for the benefit of others. Perhaps patients who were trapped here simply needed to be more aware of their surroundings. With that in mind, maybe the high rate of "releases" among patients wasn't so unexpected after all ( ... )

[from here]

The library was quieter. So much space for so little information, but it was peaceful. And this one actually stayed put.

"It was a library last night, too. The one upstairs. We opened the door, and then we were on a beach. Costa del Sol, I think she called it?" Taura sighed, but it was one of remembered contentment. "It was nice." Nice enough they'd all felt a little guilty for the pleasure, knowing that countless others were still stuck behind. They'd already been planning to come back in force when the Institute had made their decision for them. Just...two different decisions. Neither she nor Rika had been given a choice; she had a feeling Cissnei hadn't, either.

Zack couldn't help feeling a little foolish when Taura led the way to the library and he realized how close it was. So that's where that door led. Shrugging his shoulders to himself (it didn't really seem as if she was judging him, after all), he took a quick glance around the large room and nodded. Well, it was about what he'd expected -- there usually wasn't a lot of variety when it came to libraries ( ... )

Taura sat down, folding her hands on the table in front of her and resting her chin on them. It cut out most of the height difference without being too obvious of a maneuver.

"It was nice. We spent a while just...well, honestly, trying to figure out what the heck had happened. Then we started making plans. Where to go, how to try to find a way to get back here with some real firepower. But nothing really happened. We were just talking." And enjoying the sunshine; it had been the first time Taura'd really felt warm in a few days. "Oh, right! Her clothes changed -- but not ours." Or their bodies. "She was wearing something very beachy." Or just Betan, where climate control was just an excuse to crank the heat up and go around half-naked, or so it seemed ( ... )

Once Taura was seated, Zack followed suit, taking the chair across from her and sitting up fairly straight so that they were more or less at eye level. That was a lot better. He was still getting used to being around a woman so much taller than him, and he idly wondered at whether or not it was a common thing where she came from. Something to ask about later, probably.

As she explained what had happened, Zack couldn't help smiling at the image of Cissnei in her bathing suit while the others with her had remained in their uniforms. So it only switched around for the people who were actually from there. That was interesting to note, but in the end, Zack was more concerned for his friend than the technicalities of the situation.

"So... you heard the intercom while in Costa del Sol?" he asked, his bright eyes widening slightly at the very thought. That would have been pretty surreal to experience, and he wondered what the implications were. "And... does that mean you're roommates?" That was the only way that Taura could have known of ( ... )

The library was blessedly quiet after spending a couple megacycles in the Sun Room. That 'King Kong' nonsense had gotten awfully noisy at points; Ratchet was glad to be rid of it. 'Was beauty killed the beast,' indeed. He supposed it was all relative, but Ratchet couldn't consider the humans much better looking than whatever animal that odd little model was supposed to be. Either way, it had been aggravating to sit through and a waste of his time ( ... )
