Nightshift 48: Staff Kitchen

Mar 24, 2010 02:01

[From here]Coming into the kitchen, Yukari scanned the area with her flashlight. It looked... well, ordinary, in a word. Full of all the modern conveniences and appliances one might find in a kitchen outside Gensokyo. Suitably large for the staff that stayed here. It seems Sheena wouldn't have any problems cooking, as long as nothing unforeseen - ( Read more... )

Sheena scrambled after the youkai, not wanting Yukari to run headfirst into any monsters. Thankfully, none were immediately visible. That didn't mean the kitchen was devoid of them ( ... )

The kitchen was free of visible monsters, perhaps -- there were no large furred creatures with fangs dripping saliva, no hulking brute beasts seeking to rend and tear. But there was, however, something. Something that usually went unseen, especially in the half-dark of the Institute at night.

Though the light did help to dispel the general darkness in the area, there were still shadows that lay thick in the corners -- and especially thick in one particular corner, where something even darker than night itself lurked in wait. The phantasm ever so slowly expanded out of its corner, its reach oozing across the floor to block access to the exit as a shadowy tendril slid out, reaching toward the one who kept moving about so.

"Oh, I have confidence in your abilities," said Yukari reassuringly. While it wasn't hard to imagine Sheena as the kind who failed at the usual girly domestic chores, the fact that she was confident enough in her skills to offer to cook for Yukari when she was otherwise so nervous was more than enough proof for the youkai. "Genis, Regal and I usually shared the cooking duties while out on the road," Sheena replied as she situated the cookware before her. "We never, ever, ever let Raine cook. Never."

Confident as the ninja was in her previous check of the room, she didn't even think about the shadows being potential threats. She started toward the refrigerator and almost moved out of the sneaky shadow tendril when she stopped and looked back at the youkai.

"Back in Mizuho, I had to cook for myself after Grandfather got... hurt." That little pause was accompanied by a shiver as the tendril made contact with her leg. It must be drafty in the kitchen, the ninja thought. Maybe the ventilation cover was open more than it was supposed to be.

"I picked up a lot of it on my own since no one wanted anything to do with me..." Shaking her head a little, Sheena continued on to the fridge and searched for some vegetable within. Stupid cold. She better not end up sick like the Head Doctor.
