The charming pranks of adolescent girls were wounds too close to surface skin. Steam alone sent prickly shards into her every nerve, knowing her possessions held the ever present danger of vanishing from another's whims. Her brother's precious gift was (always) kept safe--nearest and dearest to heart and reminiscent of home now lost--but she had others. She was not her cousin Maria in breathing life into the inanimate. But what was the worth of mementos to one without much else? To allow the prospect of loss without agitation was a thoughtless gesture.
Even here, when most no longer mattered, Ange returned to that fear. As such, she wasted no time going through the routines, her hair still dripping when she finally managed out. Thankfully, no one actually cared here. Thankfully.
