Day 47: Intercom, Dawn

Jan 24, 2010 06:27

"Good morning - ah! Could you... could you close that, please? Lydia? Yeah. Yeah, thanks."

Unfortunately for the Head Doctor, today was particularly clear and sunny, and he sounded more disgruntled than usual as his Head Nurse seemed to do as she was told. The zzzziip of blinds unfolding was about as clear as the sound of her sighing, and one ( Read more... )

"You were admitted here by your family last night, Victoria. Don't you remember that? Also, this is a hospital. We're here to help you get better. Now, then, it's time to get up. You don't want to miss breakfast." There was something else in the nurse's eyes, and she felt around in her pocket - the young woman hadn't gotten violent or anything, but she was certainly being difficult, and that meant things could escalate. Better to be prepared for it, in her eyes ( ... )

Andrew Carter woke up very slowly, only reaching consciousness at the tail end of the intercom announcement. He'd grown used to sleeping deeply at every possible opportunity, waking up with nothing short of a hard shake or Schultz doing his foghorn routine. 'Lying in' was an experience he hadn't had since before he'd joined the army and far too many nights were spent running around in the dark or down in the tunnels putting together his latest little baby. They took sleep when they could, the war didn't allow them much of it ( ... )

She awoke to bright lights and a familiar - but certainly unwanted - hospital smell. The lights - why did they seem so bright? - caused her eyes to sting, and she instantly closed them, lifting a hand up to rub her eyes, but to no avail. Why did the lights hurt her eyes? It made no sense ( ... )

There was a vague sensation of light hitting his eyelids, the hazy sort of feeling one gets when half-asleep, unable to quite pinpoint their sudden discomfort. It was a precarious state to be in; he wanted more sleep, but even a slight shift in the bed would cause him to wake up completely. Of course, when in such a state, there was no way to judge it. Its existence was known only to those who cursed the luck of accidentally waking themselves up. Therefore, he couldn't have foreseen the consequences of unconsciously rolling to his side and attempting to cover his face with the edge of his pillow. The haze was broken, the comfort of sleep melting away entirely, but Battler rebelled, slightly shifting yet again, wanting to grab onto to those last few precious minutes that had slipped away.

However, it seemed some higher power would deprive of him of that. The roll caused the bed to creak, followed by a loud *thud* on the floor beside him ( ... )

There was the sound of the door unlocking, and a young woman that he didn't recognize stepped in, clipboard in hand. She was wearing scrubs and the sort of smile you only ever saw in professional relations, furthering the idea he must be in some kind of hospital. ... But wait, how was that even possible? According to the new rule, there was no way for him to leave but by complete checkmate. In other words, since he hadn't won, there was no possible way for him to suddenly arrive at a hospital, of all places. There was no way for him to suddenly arrive anywhereHis bewilderment must have shown on his face, but the woman in front of him was completely unperturbed by it, or perhaps she just chose to ignore it. "Good morning, Henry! Are you ready for breakfast ( ... )

"Mr. Freeman," the nurse said sharply. "I know it's hard, but that kind of behavior isn't going to help you get better. If you don't calm down, I'm going to have to sedate you ( ... )
