Night 46: Main Hall 1-East

[from here]Sai thought he might have heard voices in the next hall over and paused just long enough to see if they sounded threatening. He looked back at Shikamaru, wondering if he'd heard them too. Chances were it was just another couple patients, but they couldn't assume too much. They'd make their way quickly through this hall and hopefully ( Read more... )

Only a few steps stood between them and the indicated hallway, so it took less than three seconds to follow Sai's instructions.

Demyx glanced over his shoulder at Kvothe at last as they made their way into the next hall. "So the super long answer to your question is...the other Nobodies aren't talking to me because they want revenge against Sora, and I want everyone to just leave everyone else alone. I don't want Sora to kill them, but I don't want them to kill Sora, either...I actually said I'd fight them if they tried, which was stupid 'cause either one of 'em could wipe the floor with me, but it just seems so - dumb to fight here, when we're all alive and Sora's actually giving us a chance."

Kvothe was silent as they walked, keeping an eye out for monsters as he listened to Demyx's story. It was certainly an interesting story, not like any that Kvothe had heard before. He wasn't really sure what to think of it, it would have sounded very far-fetched under ordinary circumstances, but in a place like the Landel's Institute while looking out for monsters that might be lurking in the dark, there seemed to be no reason why it couldn't be true. Kvothe's expression was thoughtful when Demyx glanced back. "You're right," he said in response to the last part, "Revenge isn't important here, or it shouldn't be. Not against other people who are trapped here. We can't really afford to be working against each other."

The enemy of my enemy is my friend. Perhaps that could be the defining lesson of this place. It sounded, however, like a private conversation, whatever the universal truth of the statement.

Revenge. It wasn't something she spent a lot of time thinking about, but it could be a comfort in the silence and the dark.

The thought of Barons Bharaputra and Ryoval, without lackeys or sycophants, making their way down this corridor was reason enough to wish her enemies here. Let them need rescue; she would show them who was human, and who was not. Or they would kill each other at the first opportunity, and save the Institute the trouble, neatly demonstrating the original point.
