Nightshift 46: Courtyard

[from hereMitsukuni was up on the wall and Mori took his hand, knowing that despite his smaller size, his friend was more than capable of helping him up. For how tiny he was, Mitsukuni was strong enough to throw Mori - twice to three times his height and possibly twice his weight - across a room like a ragdoll. Pushing on the wall and pulling ( Read more... )

Honey jumped down from the wall, throwing in a flip just to keep things interesting. There wasn't as much opportunity to practice or even play here, so if he didn't make it fun, it probably wouldn't be. That and Chika wasn't around to test his skills at the ever so random interval, so he hoped he wasn't getting too rusty. Here was the kind of place he needed those lessons the most.

He landed carefully, looking much like he'd just completed a leap over the vaulting horse; feet together, hands stretched out. He checked quickly to make sure his things were still intact, then followed Takashi toward the doors that led inside.

This way seemed a lot easier than the inside route. Maybe they should take it more often? As long as there were no transforming robot cars outside, the people going this way would be alright. It wasn't even a very high fence. Even some of their less athletic members could make it if they had a boost up.

Even as the pair headed for the doors a sudden wind kicked up in the courtyard, sending fallen leaves and dust swirling up in a vortex surrounding them. It lasted for a handful of heartbeats before the wind abruptly ceased, and a child's giggle echoed across the open area.

Heh, just like Mitsukuni to take this opportunity to practice. His cousin was surprisingly serious about his studies of the martial arts, or rather, it was surprising to anyone who didn't know him like Mori did. He was likely missing the chance to practice as much as he did at home - and his normal sparring partner. Mori had to admit that he missed his little brother as well ( ... )

The wind picking up out of nowhere like that was strange enough, but once it died down, there was a childish laugh that followed. It was enough to put Takashi on his guard and Honey drew one of his small kunai, glancing over the grass and benches on the far end of the courtyard, but like his cousin, he couldn't sense a presence and he couldn't see anyone there. However, at Takashi's request, he did nod and hurry to the door. Locked.

Rather than waste time saying so, Honey took a few steps back and let out a shout as he kicked it near the handle, enough to break the lock. Might not be good if something decided to follow them, but it would get them inside.

[from here]

From her perch ontop of the wall, Kagura scanned the courtyard. She thought she saw some patients heading towards the cafeteria, but they were too far to recognize. Well, the important thing was that there didn't seem to be any monsters out, and Kagura didn't sense any evil spirits.

"It seems clear," Kagura said to her teammates. Then she dropped down to the other side with feline grace, the soft grass muffling the sound of her landing. Even though she hadn't sensed anything dangerous, Kagura knew that didn't mean they were safe. All it meant was that she hadn't detected any enemies, yet. She kept her bat ready as she waited for Hime and Sokka to climb down from the wall.

Hime stepped up and accepted Kagura's hand, pulling herself over once she was high enough to get her other hand on top of the wall. For once it was fortunate that they were relegated to these gray outfits; had she been in her dress, she might have had to give some thought to letting the boy go first so that he didn't see anything unnecessary. That sort of service was more in that vampire's department.

Once on top, the Royal stood tall and also took a look around. The trees cast shadows across the courtyard in the moonlight and the pond was a deep, dark black. She wondered what denizens of the deep might lurk there now that they'd crossed over to the world of darkness. It was just idle curiosity though, as their target was just below them now.

Once Sokka got up, Hime dropped down as well, landing lightly on her feet and drawing her bat from the mesh bag she'd put it in while climbing over. So far, so good.

Sure, scaling walls was easy! Probably where they came from. Sokka wasn't sure what hurt his pride more, the fact that Hime and Kagura were able to get up before him, or the fact that he had to have a girl's help to get up at all. It was probably a good thing that Shika and his friends weren't there to see this or he'd never live it down. Like the wall incident ( ... )

After Hime came up beside her, Kagura heard Sokka land behind them. In the corner of the courtyard, Kagura saw a small building that looked similar to the activities shed they had just been in. Perhaps that was the gardening shed? As she looked around, scanning for danger in the immediate area, she saw Sokka from the corner of her eye.

"Sokka!" she hissed as she moved to his side, concerned for Sokka's injury. "Are you alright?"

He appeared to be fine, except for the bloody nose, but he might also have a concussion, and Kagura knew how bad those could be. "How's your head?"
