L opened the door to the small room where, he supposed, the staff's food was served to them. It didn't take long to sweep the visible area with the beam of his flashlight, up and down and side to side, until he was assured that nothing was waiting.
"It appears to be safe, for the moment," he said to Howell, and stepped into the room.

He walked over to the door in question, held his flashlight under his arm, took a step back, and kicked hard at the area next to the handle with his good leg. After three kicks, there was a splintering sound, but the door held solid.
Something stopped him: loud reports in the distance, but not far in the distance. Not the patio... further away than that, and probably not outside... they were muffled, as if the sound was travelling through several walls. The Sun Room? It was hard to tell, but something to be aware of, and contradictory to what he had told Mello at lunch. This is annoying. How did someone get their hands on a gun?He went back to the door.
