Nightshift 45: M-C Block Hallway

[ From here. This hallway seemed to be clear, too. Not many patients were out, it seemed--though he didn't have any basis for comparison in his own hallway at least. He hadn't been out of his room and loitering in the larger hallway before ( Read more... )

Heath caught sight of someone out of the corner of his eye and turned the beam of his flashlight in that direction, but not in time to catch anyone. It wasn't safe, having a bunch of crazy people wandering these halls unaccompanied at night. He was well aware that he was including himself in such thoughts, and in his current state it was most likely true. What if it he last it and tried to chew on someone?

The thought was ridiculous, but the nagging urge at the back of his conscience couldn't be ignored. Gripping his flashlight tighter, he walked quickly into the nearby restroom.

A couple people had passed Frank with their flashlights as he entered the larger hall, and he decided to stop and try to figure out what was going on. He leaned against the wall between two halls to ease his side.

The other patients weren't stumbling around, confused, but seemed to have somewhere to go. Surely this was some kind of accident, and the staff would be turning on the power and rounding them all up soon... right?

Huh. Looked like Todd hadn't been the only one with this idea. If the intercom announcement hadn't been so creepy, he almost would have thought the staff had put together a game of flashlight tag.

Why was it so dark out in the hallway, anyway? Surely there were nurses on duty at this time of night, right?

He almost walked right by Forte before he noticed bright purple hair in the glare of his flashlight. "...Forte? What's up?" Damn, he'd never learned the kid's real name, had he? Embarrassing. Hopefully he wouldn't be too put out. And if he were still 'Forte,' hopefully he'd take Todd's lucidity better than that guy at breakfast had.

It took a moment to recognize Teisel, both because his memories as Forte were murky, and because of the flashlight in his eyes (fortunately, leaning on the wall, he could raise a hand to block it on his face). Like Sara and Price, there was some inherent trust, but he didn't really know who this guy was. Still, at least he could give him a chance while they were stuck in the dark.

"It's Frank, actually. Do you know what's going on? And please don't say there's monsters out here."

"Frank, right. Sorry." He seemed to recall something happening to Frank that had him in a wheelchair for a while, but damned if he could remember what it was. Maybe he'd fallen down the stairs, or something. "You look like you're feeling...better?"

Todd took a moment to process the rest of Frank's statement. "Monsters?" Shining his light around the hall, Todd took stock of the hallway. Other patients, some of whom looked much more purposeful than he and Frank did. "Who said anything about monsters?"

While these were hallways he'd gone through time and time again, it seemed like a different place altogether once night fell. Stephen kept his cautious pace, finding it rather worrying that there was hardly anyone else lingering around.

Scar figured that he should at least find someone to travel with, whom he would hopefully locate in one of the main hallways. There was little sense in remaining in one location for long, so the King quickly headed towards the next hallway.
