Night 45: M1-M10 Hallway

...apparently being vampired made the zombie go away. Junpei wasn't sure what to make of this development. yes, he was quite happy that he no longer wanted to go gnaw on someone's arm, but... vampire. He'd seriously swallowed vampire flesh (complete with vampire blood) and then that same vampire drank his blood. That was a bad combination, ( Read more... )

Kurt sat on his haunches, looking nonchalant about his changing back. He'd already torn the customary hole in his sweatpants, and his tail was twitching lazily behind him. Terry had slept through dinner, so Kurt wasn't exactly sure if he should wake him or leave Terry out of this particular party. After all, Terry didn't know Logan or Matt. Though it would be good to have a friend around if the worst had happened and they were both gone.

At least Peter and Kitty would be there, he supposed. But he didn't want Terry waking up and getting mad about being left behind. Maybe once everyone had arrived, he'd try waking Terry to ask him if he wanted to go. For the time being, he'd just wait for Kitty to come. And then they'd being the great Spiderman-Hunt. In the dark. Kurt grimaced at the thought. Stupid nurses taking down his posts.

As it turned out, Kurt wouldn't have to worry about waking Terry, who didn't sleep most nights anyway. Whenever he did manage to close his eyes, no one could call it more than a nap. Between all the aspects of his life, decent rest often took a backseat, and sleeping through dinner was almost something of a luxury.

Terry opened his eyes, the awareness of someone else in his room immediately putting him on edge. It took him a moment to realize who it was, and then another to figure out that Kurt had already changed. So it was officially time for the fun, huh? At least it didn't look like Terry was too late for the party: Kurt was the only one in the room, and Terry knew they were expecting company.

Company that had better be bringing pizza, Terry thought with a grin.

"Hey." Terry sat up as he called out to let Kurt know he was alive, then stretched out his arms with a yawn.

Kurt brightened when he heard Terry speak up--it looked as though Kurt wouldn't have to debate concerning whether or not to wake him up. The mutant cheerily bounded up onto the ceiling and hung upside-down in front of Terry.

"Morning, sleepyhead!" Kurt teased, waving from his position on the ceiling. "I almost ate your dinner, but shrimp and vegetables really aren't my thing.

"Kitty hasn't shown up yet," he said, which was probably more helpful than the announcement that Kurt hadn't tried to eat Terry's food.

...Okay, that was new. Terry might have been a little surprised to suddenly have Kurt in front of him, particularly since he was upside down. Normally it was Terry doing that to others, thanks to the Batsuit. But so long as there wasn't hair in his food (which Terry was going to eat, now that Kurt mentioned it), it wasn't like he was doing any harm.

"Good to know. On both counts." Terry reached over for his tray, then grinned at Kurt as he started to eat. "Otherwise you and she would both have had to listen to my stomach all night. Probably wouldn't work out too well for sneaking around the halls."

Funny thing though, that Kurt hadn't mentioned Peter. Terry got a bit of his meal down, then looked up at his roommate. "So what, did Peter cancel? He's not still upset over the cake, is he?" Terry would probably have to put it in a blender anyway just to make sure the guy didn't choke on it.

Endrance couldn't help feeling a touch nervous when he knocked at Haseo's door. He'd dealt with one roommate that was brainwashed; what if Haseo's was, too? Or...what if he wasn't there again? Please be there, Haseo. Please., he thought, pacing the halls as he waited.

And just like that the lights snapped off, intercom fading away after a message that, as usual, did nothing toward soothing its listeners. Oddly enough though, Haseo breathed a slight sigh of relief. There hadn't been any nurses coming back for him. So far, there weren't any undead hands reaching up to grasp at his ankles... or anything else overwhelmingly terrible.

... So now what?

He did nothing to object when Kanji took off, busy getting his things together, taking his time lacing up his boots... and trying not to become alarmed at just the freaking dark. He hadn't felt this way before, so that was ridiculous, wasn't it? But for the second time he fumbled in tying a knot, curses flowing under his breath in frustration. This wasn't alright. He wasn't alright, and he had no idea what was supposed to be done about it. The chances of them deciding to kill him off or something seemed pretty low after the trouble they'd gone through the night before, but he wasn't about to underestimate their cruelty, and in the end... his friends were ( ... )

"It's me..." Endrance said, before opening the door, quietly cursing the fact that he'd neglected to identify himself when he had knocked. That had been a particularly insensitive oversight on his part. "I'm sorry, I should have said," he added, once he'd stepped through the hallway. "I..."

Saying anything else about that would likely make things worse, he realized, and he stopped himself before he could. "I was worried about you, after last night. I...I was afraid they might have tried to take you again." Never mind the fact that Endrance would have gone straight upstairs had that been the case, and he would have been out for blood. His emotions were already stirred up after that talk with his roommate. The staff really didn't want to know what he might be capable of in that state.

"That, and I couldn't actually get out of my room fast enough tonight...my roommate got a dose of their brainwashing. He tried to say none of this was actually real, and...it takes a lot for me to lose my temper. Saying that was enough."

Haseo might have initially relaxed at the voice, but it didn't last when Endrance walked in and continued talking at him... and he suddenly found himself not quite capable of processing speech. He leaned against the wall harder, vision seeming to warp unpleasantly as he stared at the man in front of him like he'd just been physically blindsided. Was he hallucinating or... was Endrance actually somehow wearing the clothes his PC used in 'The World'?

"Er--" After a moment he turned the short sword over in his hand and lowered it to his side, expression dazed, then grabbed Endrance's arm with his free hand as if he half-expected it to go through him. It was real... or seemed to be- Haseo was tempted to think he'd finally gone crazy. "What the hell."

[continuing from dinner]

Almost as though that last thought had summoned the onset of night the intercom crackled to life, and Hanatarou froze briefly at the sound. After a second he remembered to breathe again and finished tying the knot on his sash, then reached into the closet for his sword. Not that it was much use to him, but he felt better for having it. Just in case. Even if he was only going over to Demyx's room, you never knew.

Then the lights went out and the healer fumbled around for a moment before coming up with his flashlight - only to remember that it wasn't working anymore. He shook it a few times and flicked the switch but still came up with nothing, and finally gave up with a mental sigh. Great. So he'd be going over to Demyx's room in the dark. This was clearly going to be fun.

Not too much time had passed before the intercom came on for the second time that night, causing Matt to shift slightly on the bed. Had... the Head Doctor's voice really changed? Maybe he was just imagining it, after thinking Mr. Landel was evil for so long.

Still, the way the lights went out was kind of ominous, and the boy couldn't stop himself from siting up on his bed and looking around the dark room.

He saw Hanatarou messing with his flashlight (why did they need flashlights? He'd thought that was all in his head) and then slowly turned to look at the door.

It couldn't be open. It couldn't be.

Matt turned back to his roommate. "You know you can't really go anywhere, right?" And yet his voice sounded somewhat strained.

"Huh?" Hanatarou glanced over toward where his roommate was, more than a little baffled by the question. "Why...couldn't I?" He'd been going places at night every night since he'd first arrived here. Had something changed? There was nothing as far as he could see, but...

He set the flashlight back down on his desk again, since there wasn't much use in carrying it if it didn't work, and moved over toward the door. No, it was unlocked just like it always was. "Um. The door's open...?" So why couldn't he go?

And just like that, Hanatarou reached over and opened the door. Matt stared for about five seconds before jumping off of the bed in a flash and racing over to the other boy's side.

Slowing down, he poked his head through the opening in the door and watched as other patients in the hallway did the same, flashlights on as they started out on their nighttime treks as always.

He backed into the room and shook his head. How could this be happening? He still felt sane, he still felt like Matt, and yet...

"It isn't supposed to be like this," he said with a frown. Was he still crazy, somehow? Or was this actually going on for real this time?

Rick ransacked the room for anything useful: he came up with a flashlight (since when did they leave flashlights lying around? They didn't even let them get real markers), and that was before he opened the closet...and discovered it had his clothes.

Not the patient monkey-suits in his size but his clothes, right down to his favorite jacket. Rick reached out, touching it, and yeah, there was that long scratch down the back in the beat up leather, right where it was supposed to be. Rick had no idea what his stuff was doing here but he wasn't gonna sweat the details when he just wanted to get outta here. Being able to do it dressed like a human being in real clothes wasn't something he was gonna shoot down either. Rick hurriedly pulled off his shirt, biting his lip when he jostled the bandages in his hurry, and tossed it to the floor. Rick kicked his pajama pants to the side next. Didn't take too long to get his regular clothes back on, shrugging into the jacket and searching through the rest of the closet, feeling more like himself ( ... )

Nighttime came at the intercom's behest, as it always did. As it always would. Unlike other instances, however, Kristoph neither entertained rest nor discussion. The institute had suddenly developed a rather acute case of "wellness syndrome", his brother being one of the more radically affected. The man supposed he could toss the fact aside and simply avoid "David" for the remainder of his...stay, but that would also mean letting the most troublesome aspects fester and grow.

And Kristoph was hardly the type to let matters be.

He gathered up his flashlight and makeshift weapon from the Night of the Living Dead, which had retained its form despite the obtrusive crack along its neck. With a graceful farewell to his roommate, the man took to the hallways.
