Nightshift 44: Outside the Institute - North

[from here]It was a little awkward to try to climb the wall with the spear under one arm, but she didn't want to risk throwing it over and then trying to find it, either. Aside from that, Meche made it up to the top without too much trouble. The footholds were actually pretty good--almost as though someone meant for them to be able to scale that ( Read more... )

Manny found his first foothold and froze. He wasn't gonna make progress here unless he passed the sword to someone else. Meche's offer came at the perfect time. He struggled to climb higher so he could hand it up to her, and the effort of just lifting it up with one hand nearly broke his arm, but he finally managed to get it within her reach. Letting out a soft breath of relief when he reached the top, he pulled himself up and swung his legs over, now sitting beside Meche.

"I'm using a cannon next time," he joked quietly, gently taking the sword back. He tried to distract himself from his breathing and the darkness below them by glancing over his shoulder at Senna.

"There's a lot of different names, I think," Senna answered good-naturedly. "I don't really go by that either."

She was content, again, to take the passive role, watching carefully as the two made their way up. Only when she was sure that both were fine, did she touch the wall. Once again, Senna scaled it quickly, crouching on top of the wall for a moment. Her eyes sought the darkness, and finding nothing (though seriously? Like she was going to see a lot in this), she dropped to the ground, landing in a crouch. Step one. Leave the institute. Done and done. The girl grinned up at Meche, cheerful now. "Bet you're glad you didn't wear your heels again, huh?"

"Put wings or something on it while you're at it and we'll just fly it around behind us," Meche suggested, since their chances of getting a flying cannon were about as good as their chances of getting any other kind. She'd meant it to be a joke, but the thought of wings froze her smile for a moment. She hadn't told him yet what Dr. Wilson had said about the angelitos.

This wasn't the time, though. Meche hurriedly jumped down the outside of the wall, landing pretty near the death god but nowhere near as gracefully. She was glad for the boots; the freeze made the ground a lot harder than it had been the other night. Still. she grinned at Senna and said, "Do we have time to run back and get them? You know, I hardly feel dressed without them." It was about keeping up appearances, something Meche was very conscious of. And something she needed to do for herself right now as much as for either of them, because now it was back into the forest again ( ... )
