Nightshift 43: Cafeteria

[From here.]In Sync's eyes there was no such thing as falling 'gracefully', especially when it was face first onto the floor after a rather sloppy escape. The teen had fallen several feet from the door, having used a burst of strength to at least pull himself as far away from the last room as possible ( Read more... )

It looked like there were a few groups of patients, but otherwise the next room seemed safe. Honey waited until they were all through the door, keeping a careful watch just in case. From what the bulletin said, usually the Sun Room was the worst of it, so if they were past that, then all that was left was to bake some cakes in the kitchen!

"We're almost there!" he said, trying to be encouraging. "Just a little bit further!"

When Wonka had come back Scourge had hauled aft pretty quickly. By now he knew the smell of blood far too well, even from across the room, and anything that died enough to bleed was killed by something even more dangerous.

At least this was familiar turf, safe turf.

As soon as Mori had realized what the smell was, he'd felt sick. The further into the room they'd gotten, the more distinct it had become until Mori felt ill. Blood. He hadn't smelled the scent often, but he knew it - it was unmistakable. And when Willy Wonka had come sprinting back to the group with that look on his face, Mori knew the truth. There was a body back there, one that was bleeding bad enough that everyone could smell it now. The sensory overload was enough to give Mori a headache, turning his face a little green, but he pushed forward into the next room with the others.

The Cafeteria wasn't so bad, but he could still sense it behind him. That coppery, warm smell as it slowly grew colder, chilled by the night air. He needed to get his mind off it and he herded the others forward, motioning toward the kitchen with his staff.

Wonka managed a smile back at Honey, but most of his attention was fixed on getting to the kitchen as quickly as possible, and getting started on the night's baking. Of course, he was usually rushing to the kitchen - out of sheer excitement - but tonight there was an element of urgency about it as well. His hunger pangs were increasing, and after realizing the nature of that hunger, a distraction was necessary absolutely as soon as possible.
