Night 43: M51-M60 Hallway

Aug 29, 2009 21:50

The intercom's words grew more and more telling as the day neared its end. Faize now understood that to those running the institute, he and the other captives were the subjects of some sort of reeducation program, one which was responsible for the brainwashing of patients, visitors, and doctors alike. Next Wave, the announcements mentioned often. ( Read more... )

Now this was going to be fun. Very, very fun. Xigbar hadn't just saved his life in the previous night shift, he'd finally gotten his hands on some real firepower. Xigbar had the rifle in his hands, patting it lovingly as he strolled down the hallway. What he needed was an audience to see just how macho and awesome he was, and then he'd take some things down, see how much dead meat he could leave in his wake. He had his bow and his knives, of course, but that was secondary. He needed to shoot stuff up, real nice. Maybe then he'd know that he could get some real stuff done.

Recluse exited his room, having taken the time to ensure his weapons were in order, including his new pistol. If nothing else would ensure a kill, possibly, say, that of a dear friend of his, a bullet to the brain most certainly would.

That made Recluse quite happy to contemplate.

[ From here]Once they were out into the hall, Kakashi finally did let out that sigh. It was hard not to feel trapped, knowing what he knew, but not wanting to spread the information carelessly even among his own team. On the one hand, Kakashi knew that Naruto had the best chance of any of them of bringing Sasuke back, even after this revelation. And he knew that Sasuke, despite whatever intentions he might have, would take his newly-fueled anger out on Naruto and the others. The Uchiha hadn't exactly had a long fuse before, after all. So was it fair to his team to keep this to himself, when ultimately they would bear the burden of it ( ... )

Just let them be okay. Kakashi closed his eyes beneath his mask, beneath the rocks that weren't there. He thought he could hear Obito's voice thinking the same thing, but with so much more serenity. He'd really believed in Kakashi, hadn't he?

Obito...I'm sorry.

He'd failed those people he cared for most in the past. Obito, Rin, Sensei. Probably Sasuke too, again. But the next generation was still there, and Kakashi had to have faith in them. He'd known ever since they all met at the lunch table that his students would be forced to go on without him eventually. He just didn't realize it'd apparently be so soon, with no warning. But maybe Kakashi had done enough. Maybe with Naruto and Sakura and Sai and Shikamaru, he'd planted the right seeds so they could keep going. It'd been what he'd tried to do from the start.

Get out of here. To Sakura, who might well still be by Kakashi's side. To all of his students, who were trapped there. He wanted them all to get out of there, to go back home and be happy ( ... )

Aidou was and wasn’t the waiting type, another contradiction of his. He could wait as long as necessary, until the moon fell out of the sky, when it came to the right people and the right circumstances… but waiting inert in Landel’s Institute, during the time of day he was fondest of and was also the most dangerous, was a plague on his patience. For more than one reason. Tonight, there was the promise of blood to be had, and he both wanted and needed the meal.

But although he was naturally repulsed to anything that hinted at zombie, this was necessary. He needed to see Sasuke and observe any changes ( ... )

[from here]

By the time Sasuke had counted two rooms past his own he was sure that he was hearing things -- perhaps the infection was making him lose his mind, was feeding him some kind of delusion based on what he'd just learned, because Itachi's voice was no longer caught just in Sasuke's head (winding around every action and every thought). It was crackling through the intercom, the words Sasuke had played again and again (I will make my illusion reality) and again (your will be my light) and thought he'd understood.

He had to be imagining it. There was no way, it didn't make any goddamn sense -- all he had to do was reach the person he was supposed to meet and focus on the sound of a voice outside his own head. Will away the memories (but these aren't memories, this is happening now) and concentrate on something else.

A sharp slice of pain through his leg made Sasuke's step falter for a moment, and then he drew up short and stopped altogether, eyes widening, pain forgotten.

Because (you die here, you murderous fuck) that was ( ... )

It didn’t make it any better to know some of the restlessness he felt was mirrored in others. As Aidou straightened and stepped away from the doorframe, he saw Sasuke’s hesitation and had to wonder what was causing it. His condition, the night, his meeting, or all? Or none?

“So you’re done,” he said aloud to announce himself.

What an absurd pair they made--they’d always made. More so that night. More so than ever. Aidou could smell the foulness in Sasuke’s blood, and at any other time… he wouldn’t be wondering what was going on in the boy’s head. He wouldn’t be wondering about the boy at all. At any other times, he wouldn’t have to look at these taints, these mysteries, see them and have them breed grey areas he didn’t want to traverse.

Sasuke straightened at the sound of Aidou's voice, concentrating as much of his hearing on it as he could without risking completely losing note of his environment -- the trade was a rough one, because now that that talk was over the pain of the infection was returning. In a different place, though, a strange radiating pain around his chest as if he'd been struck there with something.

Nothing Sasuke couldn't handle, so he took the remaining steps to approach where the vampire's voice had come from and nodded short affirmation. "I'm done."

... and interestingly, not hungry. Although he could sense that Aidou was alive, there wasn't the raging desire to sink his teeth into flesh that there had been when Kakashi had walked into the room. Perhaps it was because Aidou wasn't human?

(And Sasuke was ignoring the faint hiss of static and -- what couldn't possibly be this time I will make my your death a reality -- and what was reality was the fact of this time and this place and --)
