The intercom's words grew more and more telling as the day neared its end. Faize now understood that to those running the institute, he and the other captives were the subjects of some sort of reeducation program, one which was responsible for the brainwashing of patients, visitors, and doctors alike. Next Wave, the announcements mentioned often.

That made Recluse quite happy to contemplate.

Just let them be okay. Kakashi closed his eyes beneath his mask, beneath the rocks that weren't there. He thought he could hear Obito's voice thinking the same thing, but with so much more serenity. He'd really believed in Kakashi, hadn't he?
Obito...I'm sorry.
He'd failed those people he cared for most in the past. Obito, Rin, Sensei. Probably Sasuke too, again. But the next generation was still there, and Kakashi had to have faith in them. He'd known ever since they all met at the lunch table that his students would be forced to go on without him eventually. He just didn't realize it'd apparently be so soon, with no warning. But maybe Kakashi had done enough. Maybe with Naruto and Sakura and Sai and Shikamaru, he'd planted the right seeds so they could keep going. It'd been what he'd tried to do from the start.
Get out of here. To Sakura, who might well still be by Kakashi's side. To all of his students, who were trapped there. He wanted them all to get out of there, to go back home and be happy ( ... )

But although he was naturally repulsed to anything that hinted at zombie, this was necessary. He needed to see Sasuke and observe any changes ( ... )

By the time Sasuke had counted two rooms past his own he was sure that he was hearing things -- perhaps the infection was making him lose his mind, was feeding him some kind of delusion based on what he'd just learned, because Itachi's voice was no longer caught just in Sasuke's head (winding around every action and every thought). It was crackling through the intercom, the words Sasuke had played again and again (I will make my illusion reality) and again (your will be my light) and thought he'd understood.
He had to be imagining it. There was no way, it didn't make any goddamn sense -- all he had to do was reach the person he was supposed to meet and focus on the sound of a voice outside his own head. Will away the memories (but these aren't memories, this is happening now) and concentrate on something else.
A sharp slice of pain through his leg made Sasuke's step falter for a moment, and then he drew up short and stopped altogether, eyes widening, pain forgotten.
Because (you die here, you murderous fuck) that was ( ... )

“So you’re done,” he said aloud to announce himself.
What an absurd pair they made--they’d always made. More so that night. More so than ever. Aidou could smell the foulness in Sasuke’s blood, and at any other time… he wouldn’t be wondering what was going on in the boy’s head. He wouldn’t be wondering about the boy at all. At any other times, he wouldn’t have to look at these taints, these mysteries, see them and have them breed grey areas he didn’t want to traverse.

Nothing Sasuke couldn't handle, so he took the remaining steps to approach where the vampire's voice had come from and nodded short affirmation. "I'm done."
... and interestingly, not hungry. Although he could sense that Aidou was alive, there wasn't the raging desire to sink his teeth into flesh that there had been when Kakashi had walked into the room. Perhaps it was because Aidou wasn't human?
(And Sasuke was ignoring the faint hiss of static and -- what couldn't possibly be this time I will make my your death a reality -- and what was reality was the fact of this time and this place and --)
