Slowly? Kakashi had expected to be invited in, but that particular adjective was out of place, especially when he thought about how 'nicely' Sasuke had asked him for this little meeting. Any questions he might have had were quickly answered, however, as Kakashi pushed open the door and got a whiff of the air ( ... )

Had he really thought, for however brief a moment, that Sasuke might go along with his words? Kakashi must be getting optimistic in his not-that-old age. Resisting the urge to sigh if only because he knew the violence that would no doubt follow, the jounin resigned himself to being stuck in a situation where there was no way to win. At that moment, Sasuke couldn't think beyond his rage, and Kakashi doubted any amount of time or solitude would change that. But Sasuke wasn't his only obligation. No matter what damage control he did, Sakura would leave the room with more questions, ones the jounin didn't want to have to answer yet. The best Kakashi could hope for at that moment was to simply maintain as much control over the situation as was possible: to pretend that he knew what he was doing, when in reality, Kakashi didn't have a clue ( ... )

Kakashi's voice held the kind of finality that Sasuke, even through his anger, recognised as unchangeable. It said that if Sasuke went after Kakashi now, he would get nothing for it -- except the added bonus of Sakura figuring things out before Sasuke wanted her to, if he ever wanted her to know. If there were any reason that existed for Sakura and Naruto to believe with more vigour that they needed to insert themselves into Sasuke's life, this in conjunction with the limited space in this damned Institute was probably it ( ... )
