Again it seemed slow, taking a moment to straighten after landing and turn towards Momo, but the jump that had carried it was evidence enough that it did not wholly share in the decrepitude of the townsfolk. Even without its arms and armor, it would have been a formidable opponent, as it had been in life...

Standing up, the shinigami wiped the blood off her face with her sleeve and focused her eyes on Signum. She had fought some since the Noah had taken her eye, but she had not faced anything remotely as strong as the knight before her. How much had this corruption affected Signum's prowess? How much of a handicap was the vice captain's limited sight going to be? These were all questions she assumed would be answered soon enough, but before anything further happened...
Stepping out from the chimney, Momo met those twin flames with her own eyes. "Signum, is there anything of you still there?"

"Yes," it mouthed silently, "All of it."
Belatedly, it seemed to realize it couldn't speak, and moved a hand to its torn throat in what might have been irritation. It had found her, but there needed to be something more, didn't there...?
But all it could do was nod again.

You don't have time for this, the duty-bound side of her said. She was shinigami and this was a soul in the process of corruption. Friend or not, especially friend, Momo could not let this happen. She firmly believed Signum would not want her soul to endure more than it had to, to have everything that had been noble and honorable in ( ... )
