Day 22: Intercom, Evening Shift

Mar 03, 2007 01:37

"I trust that all of you are enjoying your free choice shifts today!" The Head Doctor said cheerily after the intercom's short jingle was over. "Most of you will, of course, not have to be ushered to a new room, because our free time will be continuing; of course, you can move around if you so desire. However, some of you will be graced with ( Read more... )

When Ritsuka realized he couldn’t hear the hum of the car’s engine, he sleepily opened his violet eyes and, blinking a few times, took in his surroundings. He quickly bolted upright, throwing the covers off him as he realized at once where he was - a hospital. Was this a memory or was it real? The young boy slid off the bed and his bare feet touched cold floor, causing him to shiver. This was real and this wasn’t the Fighter School. What had happened? The last thing he could remember was Kio driving and Soubi ( ... )

It was the waking up part that first bothered Faust. He knew, absolutely knew he hadn't gone to sleep last night. Hadn't, in fact, slept for more than a few hours the entire time he'd been in Patch Village. However... what wound up truly confusing him was a lack. He was missing her. She wasn't lying next to him (which she wouldn't have been anyway as he wasn't supposed to be asleep), nor was she standing by his bed looking at him with that beautiful face of hers. He sat up right and looked around ( ... )

"Mr. Klaus, please calm down."

The smiling nurse was rather used to patients being dissoriented. The poor things were all suffering from such gripping delusions, it was a wonder they remembered what had happened the day before sometimes.

"Your wife isn't here," she went on, still smiling cheerily. "She had to leave after you were checked in. Don't you remember? You're at Landel's Institute. But I'm sure she'll come and visit you! Now, why don't you come with me and meet some of the other patients? And we can get you a little something to eat, to tide you over until dinner!"

Faust had to blink a moment at that. Pushing aside the obviously wrong name there was the fact that this woman said his wife had left him. Impossible.

"Ma'am," he tried again, shaking his head. "There is some mistake. She must be here." Without his power she couldn't affect anything in the matirial plane. And he didn't have his power.

Landel's? Klaus? Eliza? Faust was trying, very hard to keep calm, but it was proving extremely difficult. He took a step back into the disaster area of a room and shook his head.

"No. No, I need to see her. Where is she?" His voice had risen slightly in pitch. "She wouldn't.... couldn't leave me." His eyes narrowed as he came to the only possible explanation.

"What have you done with her?" His tone promised unpleasant things if the answer wasn't to his liking.

"Mr. Klaus, you need to calm down." The nurse frowned. "There isn't any mistake. Your wife will see you next week, when visitors are allowed. I'm afraid that she can't see you until then." The new patients were always so confused.

"She didn't have a choice, Mr. Klaus. Guests aren't allowed on the premises save for approved visits. Now please follow me so you can get oriented."

The room's lack of size and grandeur would be the first sign of an unfamiliar locale; the bed, the linens, the furniture, the decor... all paltry and cheap. All of it a deeply personal insult to his class status. Especially the hideous grey... thing on his body that couldn't possibly be called clothing. Then there were the scents of antiseptics and disgustingly second-rate detergent, of the musty, well-worn blankets... Above all, the aroma of unwashed human bodies. It was a formidable nightmare prison based on just those facts. Sort of like the setting of Girl, Interrupted (not that he had watched that film willingly, oh no, the Vice President was just that talented at subtle manipulation), only without the chicken carcasses under the bed ( ... )

The nonexistent faded into nothing after their own demise. Shunned by both light and darkness, whatever the afterlife held in store for those who had passed wasn't meant for those without a heart. They just faded away into the eternal nothing.

At least, this was Xemnas' theory. After years of study and experiments he had come to such a conclusion.

But, for a being that was supposed to fade away into nothing, he was strangely aware.

How curious...The Nobody opened his eyes, and noticed he was staring at a white ceiling. An unfamiliar ceiling at that. Blinking, Xemnas sat up and instantly noticed his Organization cloak was gone, replaced with...something else. He decided not to worry over his new outfit, since the fact he was in bed was on itself quite surprising enough (if he could be surprised ( ... )

Vergil found himself being shook awake. Now, upon a first look at things, Vergil found two peculiarities about that. The first of which was that he was dead. Or at least, last he could remember, he was hypnotized into fighting Dante and was having a sword stuck in him. That constituted as dead, as far as he was concerned. Now, some might call Vergil close minded, but he was fairly certain that it wasn't typical of the dead to wake up. Unless this was hell ( ... )
