Day 40: Breakfast

Mar 27, 2009 10:29

Utena's second night seemed to have ended even sooner than the first had, which greatly disappointed her. She had been hoping that at some point, she could have coaxed her friend into telling her what was so horrible that happened in her future. Then again, curiosity aside, she was also somewhat relieved that she didn't have to hear it just yet. ( Read more... )

Miku awoke, breathing a sigh of relief. The night had gone smoothly and though some of her emotions tumbled about, she'd managed to go the entire night without a scratch on her. In fact, she only felt a little nauseous, which was more welcome than the usual violent attack she had when she saw things. A quick check under her shirt assured her that the bruises didn't look so terrible today, either, having moved into that awful yellow-greenish stage. The burns from the ropes had become gross and scabby, though those were still mostly covered, as were the worst of the stab marks.

Hiding her necklace with her other night items, Miku waited for her nurse patiently, finally able to do a little more than be drugged and slow-minded. She pulled her hair back into its usual massive bun, though her arms burned in protest. I should be more careful, what if Sousuke thinks this is Subaru's fault...?When the nurse finally appeared (was everyone running late today?) and swept Miku away to breakfast, she looked around the cafeteria thoughtfully, ( ... )

[Gonna get a smack, biotch!]The vampire went through the motions of another breakfast shift without paying the world outside of his head any mind. He stepped into the line-up, uncaring of what he put on his tray ( ... )

[You mean you are.]

Miku's nurse sat her down at a table and cheerfully motioned for Miku to eat up. She didn't see anyone yet, but that was okay for now; even if it did make her worry a little bit. If there was one thing she didn't want to admit, it was that she was a little bit happy here, even if it was a terrible, scary place. She had her friends, and Sousuke. She wanted to protect them as best she could, even if it was only throwing a pebble in a pond.

It wasn't long after she picked at her food a bit that she looked up again and settled her eyes on Aidou. Miku's skin felt hot and cold at the same time. Though she'd managed to forgive him in her mind last night, she wondered if the creeping feeling there was still a little sadness or anger at his casting off of her feelings for Sousuke. "Oh, Aidou..." she sighed, and poked back at her meal.

He used to be such a nice person, she wondered what had changed.

[Cameras don’t work on vampires, sissy girl.]

He’d known it’d be wise to bring his journal to the cafeteria with him; he wasn’t hungry, not for greasy human that wouldn’t sustain him, and he could use the time to write down his summary for Hinamori. The vampire had been “team leader” in all but name, which appeared to be what counted… However, he didn’t trust Senna to do her part as well as he can, and even if she did, Hinamori would get two reports from two sets of eyes, which would only benefit her.

He’d do this thing, and then his debt would be repaid. Abarai Renji’s memory could no longer hold anything over him.

It was when his smiling nurse offered to bring him a small salad and settled it on the tray that he felt someone watching him. The potential threat wasn’t enough to detract from his racing thoughts, and even when he turned and sought out the culprit… Miku, an absent part of him supplied. No one important right now, was what followed. Aidou was scanning the cafeteria with keen eyes, searching out the most advantageous ( ... )

Daphne felt off-balance. If waking up after scuffling with a gigantic rat in the women's washroom had been disorienting, waking up after having only been talking in the hallway was even more so. Not knowing how she'd gone from point A to point B bugged her. It would have done even without the threat of mutated freak-monsters and brainwashed people running around ( ... )

Once again, Donna had managed to do nothing of any consequence the previous night by sleeping. She couldn't help being the human that she was and needing to catch up on some rest once in a while, but the sudden drowsiness was beginning to get bothersome. How could she make sure something was getting done towards leaving this rotten place if she was sleeping all the time ( ... )

Daphne looked up, momentary surprise fading away into a quick grin, equal parts sunny and impish. The other woman looked pleasant enough, and in light of that, she was relieved to have company, both because of the buffer provided by having other people present and because she'd already spent too much time alone with her own thoughts. Left to her own devices, she'd probably drive herself crazy by the end of the week.

"On a scale of one to 'eaten by a dragon'?" she asked, a wry note to her humor acknowledging the possible truth behind the joke. "Yeah, it went okay. How 'bout you?"

The question made her wonder just how people there judged success. Not by getting out, if her conversations with Jason had been a good indication of the way things usually went. By finding something useful, or some new piece of information? By doing something to annoy the staff, even if it was only a tiny act of defiance? By not dying? She really hoped it wasn't the last one.

With an answer like that, Donna knew she and this woman would get along swimmingly. Donna's original smile brightened into a grin. "No dragons, unfortunately. Had some swamp monsters a few nights back," if that conversation with Arlene counted for anything, "but nothing to scale by. Yet," she added with a flick of her index finger.

Donna may have judged some things about the people in this place - little albino brats getting the brunt in particular - but success wasn't something she focused too much on. If she had, then her own score would not have been very high either. Sure, she'd gotten those pumps away from Meche, but aside from that? Beauty sleep only got you so far.

"Name's Donna, by the way," she introduced first, "Donna Noble."

Celes awoke with a curse half-formed on her lips. The gurney was gone, which was unfortunate, but she could always find another. At least she knew now that she could find another tonight, and would have to speak to Hughes about getting the assignments taken care of for the night. The gurneys were an excellent idea, and if they had more of them, they would have more easily accessible material.

Rolling her neck to pop it, Celes strode into the cafeteria, picked up her meal and sat down. The food itself looked like something Celes would pick up and run with, rather than enjoy in a stately manner. That said, it was rather tasty, once she'd cut it in half and took her first bite. Celes managed to relax her guard some, now that she had an idea of what the unit needed.

Celes looked up from her meal and tilted her head to the side, studying the lanky teenager (why did they all look so young?) before nodding shortly. She didn't remember seeing him before, but his knowing of her name was not surprising; she'd left it and her title upon the bulletin often enough that anyone could've picked it up easily.

"Certainly, Mister Lamperouge, how may I help you?" Celes sat back in her chair and (regretfully) pushed her tray away. There would be no eating if he wished to speak business with her.

One moment, Endrance was curled in a hallway, breathing hard and bleeding out thanks to that...he couldn't think of what to call it. It wasn't really Mia. He didn't remember seeing AIDA's familiar black specks before it had attacked, but ( ... )

Subaru was in a little less pain this morning, but not as healed as he had secretly hoped. This was his third waking since the attack, and he was still nowhere near 'better'. Considering the severity of his wounds it wasn't entirely surprising, but still unpleasant and disappointing. Subaru wasn't sure he could stand another night spent in his room, though last night's lesson with Hinasaki-san had gone reasonably well ( ... )

"Oh, good morning," Endrance said, looking up from picking at a piece of melon. He gave his new companion a once-over, noting the injuries he'd taken. "That looks like it hurts," he said, trying not to be too impolite - his voice was all concern.

Introducing yourself is always a good idea... He chided himself internally. One of these days, he would remember to do that first. It still didn't come entirely naturally.

"Sorry about that...I'm Endrance," he said, smiling just a little. "I hope I wasn't too rude a minute ago..."

Subaru smiled in what he hoped was a reassuring manner--it was still hard to tell, with half his face bandaged and sore--and shook his head very slightly. "Not at all. I'm sure seeing this is startling, especially so early in the morning. I'm Sumeragi Subaru. Pleased to meet you, despite the circumstances."

Miles opened his eyes and sighed deeply. No matter how many times he woke up back in his own bed after the long night, he would never be used to it, and particularly not after having fallen asleep where he had, and in the state he'd been in. In a rare show of sentimentality, he closed his eyes again, hoping that when he opened them again, he would have Phoenix close to him again. Of course, it didn't work, and he shook his head, trying to clear it ( ... )

Despite the events of the previous night, Naoto awoke fairly easily; easily, but frustrated. She sat up in her bed somewhere during Landel's announcement (which she noticed lacked the usual, disgustingly faux cheeriness), bringing a hand through her hair with muttered words of annoyance. They were so close, and yet... the night ended. Just a room away, and daytime had come. It was like rubbing salt right into their wounds ( ... )

"Ah, good morning," Edgeworth said, standing and extending a hand out to Naoto. "Miles Edgeworth. It's a pleasure to meet you." He gave the young man a quick once-over, noting that he looked as if he'd run into something particularly nasty during the night. It wouldn't do to call undue attention to those injuries, of course, but he made a mental note of them.

Once he'd settled back into his seat, he gave Naoto a moment to get settled in while he opened his notebook and flipped to a clean page. "You'd had some questions regarding the way time and powers work here, no?"

Edgeworth had to admit, he was a bit impressed by how seriously he was taking things. It generally took most patients - particularly the younger ones, he noticed - some time to adjust, but he appeared to have mostly hit the ground running. That tendency, and the obvious intelligence that went along with it, would serve him well, he thought.

The extended hand was taken as a personal invitation to sit down, so Naoto set her tray on the table, accepting his hand for a brief shake before doing so. It still wasn't something she was accustomed to yet, but declining otherwise would be unprofessional of her. There wasn't much food on her plate; her appetite this morning was small, it looked to be, and whatever was sitting there went mostly untouched. Eating was far from her intentions right then, especially when she could just do so later. For now, her own notebook lie untouched beside the tray ( ... )
