Nightshift 39: Recreational Field

Spider came charging outside and, remembering the mist from last night, stopped talking for long enough to get through the only other door he could see. It felt wrong, this ... being cautious.

Finding an empty hallway was one thing, but the field being completely deserted was a whole different shade of creepy. Sora didn't scare easily, and he was sure that he could handle himself if a monster showed up, but being completely alone was unnerving. Usually he had at least two friends at his side.

That hadn't been the case for a while now, though. He could deal with waiting around in the dark, cold field on his own! No problem.

He stayed near the wall, though -- it wouldn't be the smartest idea to go wandering out into the middle of the area and begging to be attacked. He was sure Allen would be here soon, since the other boy hadn't made him wait long last time. Sora clutched at his extension cord with one hand and scanned the area in front of him with his flashlight, keeping an eye out for any shadows in the darkness.

It looked like things were still alright and Sora was waiting for him as soon as he walked outside. He gave the other boy a half-hearted smile and jogged over the last few steps.

"Same as last night, right? Hopefully we'll have time to get there tonight," he suggested. They'd made it pretty far, but there'd been delays getting the wire. Tonight was just for reaching the quarry.

The only thing of interest that had happened while Sora had waited was one other patient passing him by. He was relieved that he hadn't gotten ambushed in the time that it took Allen to get here, and that relief showed in the smile he shot the other boy.

"I'm sure we'll make it this time! Especially since we got out here so quick." Both of them were also used to getting over the wall, so it was going to be a cinch! Well, they might run into problems when they were trying to get down into the quarry, but they would worry about that when the time came.

Without any delay, Sora moved away from the wall and started to cross the field, doing his best to ignore the cold. "I don't think we should use the cords to get over this time, though," he warned. "We don't want to wear them down." If they snapped at the crucial moment, it would be a big problem.

The sound of a canine howl suddenly pierced the night, the call hanging still and lonely in the still air. After a moment it was answered by another, this sound coming from the other side of the field. Two dogs, separated from the rest of their pack and driven closer to the building by hunger, had spotted the pair currently making their way across the field.

One moved into view from the east, one from the west, claws digging into the grassy turf as they loped at a ground-eating pace to meet in the center and from their pursue their prey. At their current pace the boys wouldn't be too hard to catch, but should they begin to hurry, well - the dogs could run fast as well, if the need arose.

The air outside was quite a bit cooler than inside the institute, so much so that Starscream shivered a bit. "What..." he started, surprised at the reaction his synthoid body was producing. "Of course...flesh-creatures involuntarily move the muscles of their body rapidly to generate heat. Effective, if it weren't for the fact that it makes all other activities that much more difficult. Such as talking...the clattering of these 'teeth' is uncomfortable."

Maintaining a slow, at-the-ready pace, Starscream's light continued to move about, now a bit calmer, but in a systematic fashion. A light mist covered the area, preventing the light from reaching its fullest extent. There was a smaller flesh-creature here, as well, but this one appeared to be lingering here, as if this place was its destination. I will leave any terrors to you, then, Starscream smirked evilly. Walking past the youth, he continued east to the next door and, verifying that it was the one he needed, opened it.

Looking out the door, Clayface saw some kid sticking to the wall and looking around with his flashlight. He stepped away from the door on the other side as the kid and waited, hoping he wouldn't have to disguise himself so soon - he had a feeling it would be just as hard as the night before. Fortunately, after a short while, someone else followed Clayface out and the two of them ran off into the night. While the light was close enough to reflect back and make the wall and doors just visible, he ran across to the door that should lead to the next hall over.

And this field again. There hadn't been a night that she wasn't sleeping that she wasn't on this field. At least there weren't any virgin-eating birds or crazy ice stuff going on.

...Well, there was that howling, but she could ignore that.

Senna paused a moment, taking stock of their surroundings before moving further.

There were a few particular sights and smells that were unsightly, indeed.

On the field, there was that monstrous patchwork doll with the boy Sora. Their blood, other’s blood, the sickly, disgusting blood of Landel’s abominations. Each scent told its own story there, where there was the threat of attack, of being labelled as easy targets.

The only obvious changes in the vampire’s demeanour were a flaring of nostrils and a narrowing of the eyes. More subtly, the cold grace that had come over Aidou’s movements. Cold, like ice.

If they wanted to be successful, they couldn’t stop.

“Come, quickly,” he ordered, stepping out from behind Senna and falling into a sprint, where his feet hardly seemed to crunch the grass. Senna wasn’t the only one who was agile and quick by human standards.

Lighter side, maybe. But he might be fun all the same. Besides the fact that he spoke like someone who was used to orders being followed. Senna smirked, rolling her eyes good-naturedly. It wasn't like she wanted to lead anyway. And this guy would know what he was doing better than her.

"Yes, yes, Idol-sama," she responded with a grin in her voice--not mocking at all, but teasing just the same.

And she had to appreciate his speed. Senna hadn't had a chance to test her retained traits here yet, but for her mock-fight with Falis. And even then.... She shook her head once with a grin, then darted after Aidou. She didn't bother to even try to pass him, willing to follow as long as they were going to the same destination. She stayed in his footsteps until they reached the outside wall, then deftly found the hand- and foot-holds that were there the past few times, and was on top in moments.

Up and over, then.

The field was practically buzzing with activity, even so early in the night. She sort of wanted to wait around and see if something would come over and attack her so that she could have a meal. But no, she wouldn't hold Roland up. It would be better to hunt together. She quickly reached the next door and walked through it.
