Nightshift 38: North of the Institute

[from here]Maybe he'd follow, maybe he wouldn't, she thought off-hand, dropping down to the ground below effortlessly. He was sure pissed enough that he might just walk off. And the eye thing? Senna had no idea what that was. She'd never seen anything like it before. What'd it mean? Was he human, or not ( Read more... )

There was nothing worse than being in the middle of the fight and having people spook and scatter like a bunch of horses, just like what Senna was doing. The people who couldn’t do jack shit ran, and the people who could hold their own stayed. Non-magic folk versus magic folk. Rule of life ( ... )

"I'm not running," she replied automatically. "There's nothing that could have came from that, other than getting our asses kicked. Might as well start something that can be finished." Shini-fricking-gami training, that's what that was, mixed in with some awful need to survive. Death does that to you.

She turned then, to look at him. She had to admit, he was fricking creepy like that, crouched like a gargoyle with those darker than night eyes. But like she would ever say that. Instead she watched him for a second, and resisted the urge to ask if she should be running from him. It seemed obvious he still had access to something, and that was more than her stupid breezes and teleporting.

In the end, she just went with a Senna response, complete with her curious tone. "So what's with the eyes, anyway?"

Well, wasn't she all gung-ho when she was in her Marvel comic costume? He wasn't sure if he openly disliked her answer, or just mildly didn't care.

He sprang off the ledge like there was nothing to fear jumping from a towering height onto steep, rocky ground, which, of course, there normally wasn't. Magic tended to pad death defying stunts of all kinds. As it was, his legs only throbbed a little bit; he barely felt it because of his Power. Or maybe because of adrenaline ( ... )

She glared for a second before laughing. This guy was never going to answer her straight. Everything she asked became something else. Well, she could hang with that. "I happen to like my eyes," she said, tapping her temple. "Yours are just interesting. I wondered if they came with something."

Like power, tricks, whatever. For all she knew, his eyes just changed color.

"It seems like it'll hold," Allen said, still catching his breath from the climb. "But it's probably better for going down than back up. Sorry it took so long," he added, looking apologetic. When climbing, one could almost forget that there was someone on the other end of the rope working just as hard.

[Sorry for the delay! School ate me.]

All in all, though, it hadn't been too hard for Sora to keep his grip on the cord as Allen made his way over. That probably had something to do with them being pretty similar in build. In the end, it had been a good idea for the two of them to be put on this assignment! So far, it looked like they made a pretty awesome team.

And even better than that, the cord hadn't broke! Allen was probably right about the way it should be used, though.

"Well, that's okay. We just need to use it to get down into the quarry, not back up again. We'll be pulled back here whether we like it or not," Sora pointed out with a quick laugh.

"Anyway, we just head straight up from here," he continued as he started using his arm to roll the cord back up. Things seemed pretty quiet, so it looked like they might make it all the way to the quarry without any issues.

[S'ok! Sorry for the bad linkage! ^^;]

Much as Allen might hope otherwise, Sora was right. They probably would end up right back in their beds come morning, so it was only going down that would be trouble. They just had to hope there would be a good place to tie the rope.

He scanned the area around them, but it looked like, at least for now, they were safe. There wasn't really a trail or anything to follow, but Sora had said he knew the way. Allen followed along, relaxing slightly; it was hard to be totally at ease in this kind of environment.

"This reminds me a little of home," he commented. "Well, tromping around the wilderness in the middle of the night I mean. I think I've been holed up in that building for too long." It wasn't much of an explanation, but this at least, was more familiar than running around inside the confines of that institute. Even if it was cold out here, he liked it much better.

As they headed through the woods, Sora did his best to avoid any places where it looked like it would be difficult to walk without slipping, and he tried not to worry too much about how the trees cut down on their visibility so much. The area was deadly quiet, which wasn't really normal - there should have been some animals making noise, but Sora realized that all of the wildlife was probably morphed.

In that case, maybe the silence was a good thing.

When Allen spoke up, Sora quickly glanced over, smiling at the boy. "Really? What did you do back home?" He and Allen hadn't often gotten the chance to just talk amongst themselves, so he was eager to learn more about the boy. He wasn't sure what would require wandering through the woods at night, but Sora knew he did his fair share of traveling in strange places.

Not many people could beat the inside of a whale!

Okay, so they really were in the middle of nowhere. At least, from what Suzaku could see in the misty gloom, it looked like a forested, mountainous area. That didn't necessarily mean anything, he supposed; there could be some huge metropolis just over this hill.

"Where now?" he asked. "Do either of you know anything about this area?" Just traipsing around in these woods wasn't going to accomplish anything. If he could find some landmark to identify their location, that would help a lot.
