Nightshift 38: Main Hallway 2-West

[from here]On the second floor, and she hadn't blacked out yet. The complete darkness, instead of slowing her down to a cautionary walk, allowed her to speed up. Melissa was too sensitive to light to be able to see much unless she was in total darkness, a fact which had only annoyed her up until this point. Now she could just run through the halls ( Read more... )

Itachi cautiously stepped out of the stairwell, straining his eyes to check that the way was clear. There were only a few other patients to be seen, thankfully. Remaining aware of his surroundings, he took another look at the map.

"There does not seem to be much down the hallway directly in front of us. I believe the rooms we are looking for are off the hall further down to the left." That was the hall he had begun investigating that night with Jiraiya, but they had gotten nowhere of use that night. At least he had gathered some information about their own world that night, though he was still worried about Jiraiya's suspicions. Perhaps he would be able to explore the area more thoroughly now.

He stayed close to the group. Having lost his flashlight in the incident with Yue and that strange boy last night, it did make maneuvering in the dark a little harder. His memory told him it would be simple to make a spell to give light, but he wasn't about to use that just for his own benefit.

"So far, so good," he smiled, checking the halls for any signs of that boy, or anything else for that matter.

No sign of anything dangerous yet. That was always a good thing, although MOMO knew better than to let her guard down. Her sensors were of little help here but she still paid close attention to them, just in case. After all, a few seconds warning was better than none at all. She could always use her flashlight, but she chose to keep it off until they actually needed to start looking for any items.

"Sounds good," she said with a nod. The morgue and autopsy room had been on the left too, she remembered. It made sense for other similar rooms to be the same way.

Indy felt just that little bit safer once they left the stairwell behind them and entered onto the main corridor of the second floor. That put them closer to where they'd run across that plague doctor woman last night, but at least the visibility was better here.

"I'm surprised by all the kids myself," he said, resuming their hushed conversation. "If this place weren't so obviously evil, I'd almost have to applaud their methodology. Whatever else you can say about these thugs, they've got a damn thorough sample population for their experiment." If only they knew what the hell it was.

"Children are more malleable than adults," Methos pointed out quietly. "They're more likely to give in and accept the fabrications we're being fed. Or to believe in monsters," he added wryly, glancing off down the wide hall. It seemed mercifully free of masked women tonight. In fact, he neither saw nor heard any hint of trouble, though the presence of other patients was obvious enough. Was that a good sign, or a very bad one?

"Of course, they're taking a great risk by bringing them here. People are more likely to stand up and notice children going missing. Even if they are all orphans, I very much doubt it could remain undetected. Whatever the payoff for this is, these people must think it massive." His hand tightened, shifting on the clothes rod. Anything the hospital's shady higher-ups thought massive couldn't possibly be a good thing.

"There's also more likely to get hurt," Indy said, "not that these guys seem like the types to lose sleep over that. Except that we're so irritating to replace, of course." The words from the intercom were still ringing bitterly in his ears--although not as loudly as their footsteps, which seemed to echo in the near-silent hallway.

At least it didn't seem to be attracting anything--for now. Grateful for small blessings, Indy continued on toward the center of the building.

There were a few people up here already, most looking like they were passing through or deciding where to go. This was completely new territory, and definitely not within the safe areas, so he was on guard.

He continued to talk to Joshua, though. "I want to find some instructions I can look at myself. Pictures would be best, of course." He decided to be more detailed as he realized that the kid was probably asking so he could help search once they got to their destination.

In contrast, Joshua seemed completely at ease; he'd been here before, after all, and he hadn't seen any dangers coming his way. Besides, he had someone else to take the damage for him. Why wouldn't he be at ease with that knowledge in mind?

He gave a considering hum as he listened to Forte, thinking about what the man might need to know. Not even knowing what he'd need to know? Clearly, he was much worse off than Joshua had originally thought. "Hm, in that case, I think I might know what to look for. Still, it does beg the question; what were you before you came here?"

"You didn't know? I'm a robot." He finally smiled slightly, with pride, on the last word as he continued past the hall to the one just in front of them.

TK turned the corner, hoping that whatever that gas had been, it wouldn't spread this far. He pointed down the hall to the next corridor. "It's actually that way."

Gas now? Citan didn't breathe easily until they were around the corner, eyes narrowed. What else were they going to toss at them? Once beyond the 'gas', he took a deep breath and paused a moment.

"They're unrelenting in their tactics, aren't they," he muttered, adjusting his glasses. The mix up in direction certainly didn't bother him any - it was bound to happen in this sort of place. And for all they knew, something far worse than whatever had been in the hallway was waiting down the other corridor.

Armand had allowed Alec to tug him back to his feet when he'd realized there was no air to be had near the floor. It had almost been as if the air was pulling back from his attempts to breath it. Then TK had picked him up and ran back the way they'd come. He vaguely heard TK say they'd gone the wrong way.

His head was spinning a bit, but there was air here. He could breathe. And it was comfortable cradled against TK, but he couldn't stay like this. "Put me down," he murmured. "I can stand." The wrong turn was mortifying. It had been his mistake. Just as well that he'd been the one to pay the price then.

"Are we all back safe yet?"

"Looks like," Alec said. One, two, three, and four - there they all were. The gas had worried him for a moment, but Armand seemed to be recovering. He still couldn't believe they'd gone down the wrong hallway.

"Armand, are you all right?" Yeah, it was a question, but one that frankly needed to be answered. If the Frenchman hated him for it, so be it.

Another hall like the one below. More people. Albedo did not like the larger hallways. Too much was exposed, and he stuck out with his bright hair. Any shine from a light would pick it up. He chose a hall at random, and slid down it.
