NIGHTSHIFT 38: M21 - M30 HALLWAY

Jan 24, 2009 18:30

Finally! The doors had unlocked, and Blitzwing could go. Tonight would lack the frustrations that made the night before such an irritating exercise in futility, not least because he'd have nothing to do with the traitor at all. He also had a slightly better idea of where he was going, at least for this first stretch of the journey: it was with no ( Read more... )

The day had gone slowly, but Kira hadn't missed seeing Hinamori's post on the bulletin board. He was quiet throughout dinner and waited patiently for the doors to unlock. Once they had, he slipped out into the hall, one goal in mind and nobody to distract him. He could only hope, of course, that there would be no monsters in his way, or anyone who needed help. He didn't have time for distractions tonight.

((Going here.))

Gathering medical supplies tonight, then? That was different. Possibly more difficult than the metal gathering, but it might prove to be more interesting, and Itachi might gain some familiarity with other areas of the Institute.

On the other hand, as far as he knew the two people he would be traveling with were not notable for their fighting ability. If they ran into anything, he would have to take responsibility for it. At least MOMO was a healer, so he could afford to sustain some damage, should the worst situation arise.

Itachi grabbed his utility knife and flashlight, tucking his map into his waistband, and made his way quickly out into the hallway.

[From dinner.]

The intercom coming on was so normal for Peter that at first he didn't consider that it was going to baffle his new roommate. He was more interested in hearing the man's response to his own question, but when Sam looked over at him with a confused stare, Peter caught up with himself.

"Oh, yeah..." He nodded vaguely in the direction of where the noise had been coming from, and then brushed his bangs out of his face. "That's the guy who's in charge of all of this. His name is Martin Landel, and pretty much our only exposure to him is through those announcements. He's cheery during the day, and... like that at night ( ... )

Shutting lights, also not a good sign. Sam blinked, trying to get his pupils to adjust to the sudden darkness, but it was still pretty damn pitch black.

There was the remaining issue of what he'd just been told, too, but he filed it away. There was no point in dwelling on it; he was missing too many pieces to make heads or tails of anything right now.

He started to reach for the Taurus instead before remembering that it wasn't there, that he had no weapon on him at all. Damn it. Bullets didn't kill everything, he knew that, but it still made him uneasy being so empty-handed in a situation like this. He didn't even have a matchbook on him.

None of that meant he was going to stay here, though ( ... )

Peter had to admit that he was relieved that Sam was coming with him. This saved him the trouble of trying to search out someone else who he could spend the night with. This meant he was likely going to have to do more explaining as they made their way to... wherever they decided to go, but he didn't really mind ( ... )

-- Oh. "Thanks." That was almost too easy.

Sam hesitated, reached under the pillow. The flashlight was a little heavier and bulkier than he would've preferred, though it was certainly better than nothing.

He couldn't stop from raising his eyebrows slightly, either, as he watched Peter pull out a shovel of all things from the closet. Makeshift weapon, sure, he got that, but what the hell was going on with this place, if they let people just keep large gardening tools in a closet? Masquerading institution or no, you'd think they'd still...

Never mind.

Technically, he had no where they were going, but he did at least know they'd be heading out the door, and so he ended up stepping forward to take point, anyway, still not used to seeing anyone else as anything other than a civilian.

Once more, it seemed like there were more things to be done this busy night, and yet Adelheid found himself struggling. It wasn't just the pain, even though the tattoo from that ghost had spread across his face and down his neck, sending shooting pain throughout his body. That was just pain; he could deal with agony of that level. No, what he was struggling against was the combination of distraction and exhaustion, the two factors together making him think, over and over again, about how good it would be to just lay down on his bed and sleep, sleep and dream until the pain went away forever.

...but no, never again. The young man shook his head and took to trying some simple weapons forms with his curved blade, trying to distract himself until someone else came along...

Well, the entire way here was expectedly uneventful. Any and all distractions could wait until after this was over. Lowering her flashlight, Yukari brushed out her skirt some before lifting a hand to knock on the door.

"Hey, it's me," Yukari called out; he should have been able to recognize her voice by now. "Are you in there?"

As soon as he heard the voice, he knew who it was. Yukari Takeba, the girl that he'd made the bow and a handful of arrows for... and who had apparently not been able to meet their rendezvous last time. Ah well, that was in the past; Adelheid wasn't one to hold a grudge to someone else.

Even still... he made a point of turning away from the door before answering, "Yes, I am; come in." Of course, what he didn't know was that the patterns of holly tattoos could be seen even on the back of his neck...

Yukari opened the door and stepped through, carefully closing it behind her. Adelheid was turned around this time, too, just like last time, as if he were busied with something; did he always have a lot to do?

"Hi again," Yukari greeted, hovering by the closed doorway once more. On a closer look at him, something seemed a little off... but she wasn't about to go up and shine her flashlight at him; he probably wouldn't like that too much. On top of that, he likely wanted to make this exchange quick. "Well, I'm ready!" she continued eagerly, looking rather bright. "I can take a look at it, as you said I should."

It was a sensation he couldn't describe, sleep weighing his eyelid heavily so suddenly and dragging him abruptly from his former place of repose. A few moments ago, he'd been propped up against a windowsill with wooden splinters digging into the back of his fine yukata and the comfortable weight of his shamisen in his arms. Recent defeat had left him reluctantly shaken and unable to find rest, something wild stirring inside of him that bade endlessly for blood. The Shiroyasha's name hadn't been too far from his lips, twisted out with distaste at what that man had become. His specter still continued to haunt him, once a formidable demon on the battlefield born anew into an unlikely enemy ( ... )

Too many questions hit him at once -how long had he been lying there? was he still dreaming? where was he and who was responsible?

Was it the Amanto?

Had they found him and broken in somehow?Something just didn't add up. He wasn't so lax as to allow that kind of scenario take place. Besides, Bansai had been on the ship with him. If there had been an impending attack while he was asleep, the other man would have notified him immediately. As it was, his security was too impenetrable for him to have been kidnapped ( ... )
