Day 38 - Doctor's Office 7 [Dr. Suresh]

Jan 10, 2009 15:06

Mohinder adjusted the setting on the lamp in the corner of his office one more time. The idea was to give the place a comfortable atmosphere, and while he generally liked things a bit on the dim side, he didn't want anyone who preferred otherwise to think they were stepping into the Batcave. Satisfied at last, he moved back to his desk and ( Read more... )

The mention of doctors' appointments over the daily announcements hadn't come as any real surprise. Though the hospital seemed to be anything but a place of healing once one scratched beneath the surface, Methos supposed they had to keep up appearances somehow. An institution in which patients languished without ever speaking to an actual doctor would be suspect, no matter how ignorant one assumed the common man to be. But he'd anticipated going several days at least without seeing anyone with more authority than the nurses. And so it was with genuine surprise that he followed the nurse who'd pulled him aside from the mass flow of patient traffic down along the main hall and into a smaller corridor lined with what he could only assume were doctors' offices ( ... )

His patient seemed to be expecting an invitation of some sort. Mohinder obliged, greeting him with a smile and motioning for him to take a seat. "Mr. Pierson. Please, sit down."

It was hard to tell much about the man on first appearances alone, but he didn't have the look Mohinder might have expected for your typical resident in a mental facility. Then again, it wasn't fair to think that anyone who'd been entered there was going to look like the stereotypical loon with wild eyes and wilder hair. Plus, according to the file, this man had only been institutionalized recently.

"My name is Dr. Mohinder Suresh. They've put me in charge of your therapy sessions, but we're just going to talk a bit at first. I hope that's all right with you." Pierson didn't exactly have much of a choice otherwise, though he supposed if the man threw a fit they'd have him removed from the room. Still, it would at least do to be polite.

Methos inclined his head politely, replying with an even, "Thank you." He sat as directed, folding his hands comfortably in his lap. His gaze held the only hint of restlessness, still assessing and filing away details. The picture painted was an curious one; neither the doctor nor the office were quite what he'd expected, even considering how unlikely it would have been to find thumbscrews or instruments for use in trepanation.

During the day, that was. The more he heard about the regular run of things during the midnight hours, the more he found himself wondering.

He smiled slightly, as though amused by the illusion of choice, though not entirely unappreciative of it. He could certainly appreciate the technique behind it. "I'd imagine this would get very dull if it wasn't."

"Right." Mohinder smiled again. He then spread his arms out briefly before him, handing the reins of the conversation over to the other man. "So why don't we start out by having you tell me a little about yourself. Anything you think is important will do. I'm not going to pry too far just yet."

The session was off to a good start, for what it was worth. Pierson hadn't contested his name, as he'd heard many patients were prone to do. He seemed rather calm and at ease with the situation as well. That would hopefully make working things out a fair bit easier. Still, he knew the man was here for a reason. In some way, he was unwell.

Ami was surprised when a thin nurse with pursed lips stopped by her table, telling her that her "doctor" was waiting. She followed the nurse and was left outside a door with the number 7 printed prominently on it, with a smaller sign which read "Dr Mohinder Suresh" underneath.

She studied the door momentarily before entering with apprehension.

"I won't bite, I promise." Mohinder smiled at his second patient of the day. It was a bit depressing to see this one. She couldn't be out of high school - slightly younger than Claire if he remembered the file correctly. This place couldn't be a good experience for her, upstanding institution or no. "Take a seat Miss... Hitomi? I'm Dr. Suresh."

According to her file, this one had been around a bit longer than his last patient. "Did you have another doctor before?" They might have done things differently, and he didn't want to cover too much of what had already been covered. He might have to give her information another read through.

Ami started slightly at the voice. Being in here was really trying her nerves. "Good morning, Dr Suresh," she said, bowing slightly in Japanese fashion. She studied the doctor through her fringe. He seemed nice enough, but he was still using that false name of hers.

She smiled shyly. "My friends call me Ami," she said, hoping that given that her first name was apparently Manami, it would sound like a nickname. Being called a completely different name made it seem like Ami Mizuno didn't exist.

"This is my first time to one of the doctor's rooms," she said, taking a seat, and looking around the room. It appeared the doctor was in the middle of unpacking. He must be new here, she thought. Maybe there's still a chance...

Mohinder supposed Ami was a reasonable enough nickname to derive from Manami - especially from a high school perspective. There would be less having to deal with people making fun of or mispronouncing the name in an American classroom.

"Oh, well that's good," he said with another smile. "Then I don't have to worry about contradicting anyone else's advice, I suppose." He needed to make sure she was at ease before he started asking more difficult questions. She looked like the shy, quiet type and the last thing he needed was for her to break into tears right off. You never knew with these kids. "Why don't we start off by having you tell me a bit about yourself."
