Nightshift 37: Cafeteria

HK was glad to get out of the Sun Room. Not because he was scared of ghosts, of course. But anything that he couldn't stab was never going to be a favorite for him. It just wasn't fair.

Well, maybe if anything decided to try and menace them in here, he could happily disassemble it with his scalpels.

subzero, fai, shiki, ururu, beatrix, kurogane, ophelia, dean winchester, hk-47

They were the first ones into the cafeteria, and while SubZero didn't see anything, that didn't mean there wasn't anything here. At least they'd gotten past that ghost relatively quickly.

There would be one more room to go through after this, then they shouldn't have any trouble getting into the basement. SubZero had no idea what awaited them down there, though, aside from Arlene's description of the room she had been teleported to last time they attempted this.

Nothing so far. Good. "Through to the kitchen," Beatrix said in a low voice to Ophelia, so the bitch would know where they were going.

It was better than just dragging her along. She'd probably be more cooperative if she was slightly informed.

Ophelia gave Arlene a nod and a short "Fine," as they crossed the cafeteria toward the kitchen door. She tried not to pay Arlene much more attention than necessary, instead staying on alert for any more strange creatures that might be lurking about. It wasn't that she was scared of them (at least, that's what she believed), but she wouldn't exactly be pleased if another one got in her way when she was hot on the trail of a possible way to Landel.

HK ignored the meatbags following him, opening up the kitchen doors and heading through. While he was unsure whether they'd get at all close to anything in charge of this place, at least there might be something interesting along the way. Stopping to stomp all over the roses along the road of life, if you will.

Shiki let out a sigh of relief once the cafeteria door opened and there weren't monsters there. She motioned with her - not quite free, but still good enough - arm to the closest table, then began moving towards it.

"C'mon. We can let him rest here for a while," she said, trying to get him into one of the chairs.

If the thing had wanted to kill them, it'd had its chance. No, this was something completely different. There was a moment of painful disorientation, similar to traversing the other worlds, but his body seemed to feel every inch of this particular transition.

The air lit up in the room for a moment as he reappeared, pixel by pixel, like putting his pieces back together. Not a way he would choose to travel, that was for certain. At least he'd landed on something soft and not a hard tile floor. He was still for a moment, then stirred, blue eyes blinking a few times before they focused on his new location.

He recognized Ururu first, then Shiki, and his mind told him that something was missing, something he couldn't quite place (and perhaps someone as well). That and it was a bit colder than it'd been before ( ... )

Ururu had nodded, just starting to help Shiki get Kurogane into the chair when suddenly there was light in the air. At first she thought it was something bad, another enemy about to attack. Knowing Kurogane was still not awake and Shiki still didn't have power to fight, Ururu quickly put Kurogane down, stepping away just enough to attack if she had to.

But it turned out that she didn't. It wasn't an enemy, but Fai-san that had appeared out of nowhere. Gasping, Ururu closed the short distance, reaching out to try and help the man.

"Fai-san!" Things had just gotten worse, hadn't they? Fai-san was dressed differently, and it looked like most of his clothes were gone. But more importantly, Fai-san didn't look very good, and Ururu knew Kurogane wasn't in good shape. She reached out, trying to help the smaller man off of Kurogane.

"What happened?" Ururu wasn't so confused just yet, but that was mostly because she was still afraid. "Is everyone okay?"

The sudden weight on top of him redefined one part of that CPR stuff Mello had been explaining, and not the one involving mouths touching. Fai didn't weight much, but his sudden drop knocked the wind right out of Kurogane and had the ninja coughing hard as a result ( ... )

"Stay with me," Sousuke said, backing into the doors and opening them. He had to get her to safety. And while this was the second most likely area for an ambush, he couldn't help it at the moment. She needed to be someplace where he could take care of her.

He lay her down gently on one of the tables, looking briefly at the other group before assessing Miku's wounds. She was losing blood. She seemed a little delirious as well. She needed bandages.

Sousuke unzipped his tactical suit and let it hang about his waist. Quickly, he stripped off his undershirt and began tearing it into pieces.

Miku's brow wrinkled in confusion. Wasn't she already with him? Where was she going? Her head throbbed dully in time with her pulse. "I'm here..." she mouthed and looked at him through half opened eyes. If she were a little more healthier, there would have been flailing, and blushing, and protests to put his shirt back on.

As it was, she could hardly muster the strength to put herself to rights, fix her shirt and stockings. However, the stockings were a loss, snagged and ripped to shreds that clung to her legs only because they were bloodied. She retreated further into the quiet space of her mind, where there were no ghosts, and no pain, but only welcoming white noise. The woman -- no, the girl -- had suffered as well. Suffered like she had.

How sad. How unlucky.

"Miku!" Sousuke shook Miku's shoulder, hoping to keep her awake. She couldn't fall asleep--it was dangerous in case she had a concussion or other head injury. "Stay awake, I'm right here."

He scanned her body for the worst wound, bandage in hand. While Miku may have flailed at him to put his shirt back on, Sousuke wasn't fazed by Miku's state of undress. He was concentrating on one thing: stopping her bleeding.

Gently, he began wrapping her torso tightly with the shirt. Supporting that was most important. Next could come her legs--there weren't any major arteries or veins cut, so that came secondary.

"'m awake," she murmured, tiredly. "So tired... Sousuke..." She whimpered as he began to wrap her torso, trying to push him off to slacken the pain that leapt across her like lightning. It didn't work, she was just too weak, too much spiritual and physical energy taxed in the resistance and ultimate succumbing to of her tormentor.

Miku's eyes opened a little more, trying to pull herself away from the quiet place for a little longer, just until Sousuke said it was okay for her to rest.

[From hereDean dragged himself the last couple of feet through the cafeteria doors, getting far enough to half-lean, half-slump against one of the cafeteria tables as he caught his breath. If anything was dogging him, he'd pretty much left a big, bloody "here I am" trail on the floor that even a five year-old could follow. There was no way he'd make it in one go to the kitchen. Everything hit him at once: exhaustion, that cold night at the crossroads, Sammy, the dizziness from the blood loss, all the questions he had and jack in the way of answers. Dean had to stop. He wasn't Dad ( ... )
