Nightshift 36: M81-M90 Hallway

Third time was the charm, as they said. Ken was not about let the old axiom fall by the wayside if he could help it. Alita may have sounded reasonable regarding his end of the bargain, but the child hated leaving things undone, especially after multiple tries and the addition of another request. Come Hell or high water, he had to retrieve his ( Read more... )

Archer glanced out into the hallway. Coast was clear. He decided to let Brook off the hook tonight, since he'd been putting his roommate through a lot lately with all those trips to the basement. Maybe Brook wanted to see his nakama tonight?

Well, he'd leave a note for his roommate, detailing his plans. If he wanted to join up with Archer that was fine, but if not, then that was okay too.

After gathering his gear, he silently left.

His meal was finished, the Intercom clicked on again, and there was still no sign of his roommate. This was bad. Potentially very bad. Gritting his teeth as he reached under his mattress to retrieve his weapon, the mutant reasoned that it was highly unlikely the Spider would show up after lights out, so he wasted no further time in angrily throwing open his door and heading out into the blackness.

Crouching, he sniffed the air methodically. There were scant few scents in the air in this part of the Institute, and none of them were familiar. He backed up against a wall and resolved to wait a few minutes to see if Cole showed up in the first instance. Perhaps Parker's back-home buddy would come around looking for him, too. Logan wasn't looking forward to telling either of them that Parker had seemingly disappeared.

Entering the hall he remembered Peter's room being in, Harry walked along, looking for his friend. Hopefully he didn't he have any plans that couldn't wait, Harry really didn't want to discuss his father or whatever relationship may or may exist between Peter and Eddie around the other two. It was too personal to share with people he barely knew.

Spotting Logan waiting outside the room, he came up beside him, asking "Hey! Is Peter in there getting changed?" If he was, that would give him his chance to talk to him in private.

Logan had caught the scent of the boy as soon as he'd entered the hall. In a way, he'd hoped that he'd seen Cole first. At least Statesman would be somewhat pragmatic about the situation. But no, it was Peter's young friend. This ain' gonna be pretty, he thought with a brief scowl. He knew that Mr Osborn here probably didn't think very highly of him, but it was important to know the truth, regardless of how bad it could be. The mutant decided not to pull any punches, and just lay out as much as he knew ( ... )

Harry froze at the first words out of Logan's mouth. Peter was gone? Taken - somewhere, who knew where? He could've been missing since the last night they'd been together and he wouldn't know!

Slumping against the wall, Harry fought back his fear as he tried to guess what could be happening to Peter right now. He didn't care how pathetic and pleading he sounded as he said "He - no! What would they be doing to him? We have to find him!"

Peter couldn't be gone, not now! Who else would understand what it meant to him that he'd seen his father alive again? He'd been relying on Peter telling him he wasn't crazy, that there was a rational explanation for Norman showing up. Now, he didn't know what he'd do.

Rounding on Logan, he shouted "I thought you were keeping an eye on him! How - how could they just take him!"

Leon gave his roommate a bit of an odd look at the slight trace of nervousness in his voice. Well, maybe there was a good reason for it, maybe he was thinking back on some bad experience or something. Certainly Leon's own chest seized up painfully for a moment every time he thought of that thing biting down on and through his hand, and the sick wet sound of his fingers hitting the floor. Whatever the cause, Leon chose to ignore Clark's uncertainty for now--his hope was still that it wouldn't come to a fight in the first place, anyway ( ... )

Clark looked surprised when Leon produced something that looked awfully like a spear and a knife out of nowhere. He hadn't even seen them around the room before.

"Where did you get those?" he couldn't help asking, trailing after his shorter roommate and glancing from the weapons to the other boy. He watched as Leon armed himself like he knew what he was doing, which Clark found a little alarming - it implied this wasn't new for Leon and he had experience with this sorta thing.

"Mostly upstairs. The good knife came from the staff kitchen, and the broom handle from one of the storage closets. The knife I used for the 'spear tip' came from a restaurant in town." Leon seriously doubted that it would last more than one good hit, since it was meant for nothing more than cutting steak, but even one would be a help, and the broom stick could be used as a staff after the knife-end broke off.

One more thing was needed, so Leon grabbed the pillowcase off his bed, to carry metal in. Tucking that into his waistband, he figured they were good to go, so with a brief gesture to Clark he headed on out.

Tonight, Leon was going to compare notes. Tonight he might actually learn a thing or two. He wasn't going to sit around hearing about something without taking any action anymore. Nope!

Tonight, there was going to be alchemy talk and he was looking forward to it! Now it was true he knew next to nothing about the guy he was meeting, but that was okay. He wasn't too worried.

He slipped on a pair of slippers along with one of his overly large doctor's coats and made sure to grab his spellbook. Then, just in case, he wrapped his two knives up in his pillowcase and slipped them into one of the coat pockets. Then he was off, flashlight in hand.

It wasn't lack of preparation that made Fwiffo hesitate after the frankly ominous voice over the intercom stopped speaking; he'd done his best to memorize the maps on the bulletin board earlier, and had discovered a flashlight underneath his pillow just where the Captain had said it would be. To be perfectly blunt, it was fear: complete and utter terror of horrible, gory, monstrous death. Fortunately, Spathi were used to such emotions, and knew just how to handle them.

The fact that Captain Zelnick would no doubt be extremely disappointed if he let these new hunams he was supposed to meet down also did wonders for Fwiffo's nerve, though he still found himself quietly muttering the traditional Spathi prayer against death as he slipped out into the hallway, leaving the somewhat dubious sanctuary of his room.
