Dayshift 36: The Cafeteria

Oct 14, 2008 11:44

Miku hurried away from her new friends (and kitten) to the cafeteria. For some reason she was just terribly ravenous. Her nurse smiled, relieved that her patient had finally chose to eat something and wouldn't continue that backslide into poor health. She loaded the girl's plate with French toast and fruit, dusted the bread in powdered sugar and a ( Read more... )

The world had seemed to dissolve again, and Bourne found himself sitting in his bed...back in the Institute. What the fuck? Had it all been a dream? But the stench of blood had been so real. His dreams were pretty damn vivid, but it couldn't have all been the product of a sedative-induced stupor ( ... )

Melissa was not used to the mindcasting scape being so quiet. With the scape being limited to just about one room, it shouldn't have been a surprise, but it still felt refreshing and put her in a somewhat good mood come brunch. Enough that she didn't try to correct everything the nurse told her this time, didn't mind whatever selection of food was picked out for her, and even seemed to be getting used to the barrage of thoughts without the protection of headphones. Granted, the barrage of thoughts was less than what she normally dealt with in Bixby ( ... )

Bourne had noticed the girl being guided to his table, but he hadn't reacted. She was using only one hand - maybe she'd been attacked by one of the night guards he'd heard of in this place.

It was only when she'd put her inquiry out so abruptly that he removed his attention from his eggs and bacon. "Who wants to know?" he asked neutrally, guarded but not entirely unwilling to talk. What was with the sheer amount of kids here? It smacked of not only sheer illegality but immorality, and he knew that Hirsch and company were more than capable of that.

If Melissa was supposed to take the question as a cue to give her own name, she either completely missed it or simply ignored it. The mindcaster studied the man for a few more moments in silence, eyes narrowed, then sat back and picked up her fork with her left hand. This was interesting. The man tasted of two different, yet entirely equal identities. Normally when someone had a conflicted taste like that, the stronger one was who they actually were. But this guy's two tastes were not only as different as night and day, they were also equal. Like he was both people.

"So. Are you the assassin or are you the... other one?" she asked bluntly before taking a bite of her food. It didn't occur to her that the question might be dangerous or that the man might not be used to mind-readers. She wasn't asking for trouble; she was simply curious.

[Waiting for the guy who'll eat anything, and the guy who's afraid of being eaten~ X3 ]

Well, that had been the least cheerful conversation Zelnick had had yet. And, no offense to Ken, it made the prospect of food look all the more appealing.

It wasn't until he was in line and taking a little bit of everything-- there was no way he could eat it all, but it all looked so good, he couldn't just decide on a few things-- that he realized that he'd neglected to figure out who he's be eating with.

Well... oh well. If anyone needed him, they could come find him, and if not, he could chat with whoever sat near him. In the meantime, he had french fries to try.

Wally waved goodbye to Clark and eagerly made his way over to the buffet. His crutch was making movement a little more difficult and a lot slower than he liked, but he wasn't about to let that stop him as he piled a tray high with waffles, pancakes, french toast, bagels, hash browns (at least two of everything), and after a moment of thought, managed to squeeze some scrambled eggs and bacon on the side. Pleased with the resulting arrangement, he managed to balance it precariously on one hand as he looked around, finally spotting an empty seat next to Zelnick ( ... )

Despite the gnawing pain in his middle, it'd be impossible to say Fwiffo was actually looking forward to his meal. Eating hunam-fashion was so difficult; it made walking look like encrustling-play next to it. Fortunately hunams seemed to prefer softer foods for their morning meal; the things called "waffles," for example, could be easily torn into small enough pieces that very little chewing was required. And then there was juice and milk, both of which the Captain had said were good for the hunam body -- Fwiffo took a glass of each ( ... )

Zelnick was torn between laughter, trying to help Wally reclaim his breakfast, and genuine worry at Wally's injury-- he'd hurt his leg? Or a monster had. Neither were good things, especially when they happened to someone Zelnick kinda liked.

"Don't try that again," Zelnick said, amusedly, and raised his eyebrows at the impressive amount of food Wally had before him. "Hungry this morning?" He had thought he'd taken a lot, but it looked like a light snack next to Wally's mountain.

And there, on his other side, was Fwiffo, looking as happy as Fwiffo ever did to be there. "Good morning," he said, amiably. "Have you talked with Captain Hitsugaya?" It looked like Fwiffo was at least going to try and eat, though Zelnick noted a decided lack of protein on the plate. He'd have to get Fwiffo to at least try some sausage or something...

Celes's decision to retire from the Chapel and perhaps find some comfort in her bed was interrupted by the Head Doctor's announcement. Her nurse lead her downstairs and off into the cafeteria, chuckling quietly.

"Well, Miss Kensington, I guess you don't get your cat nap, mm?" she said and Celes glanced skyward for a moment to restrain herself. The general did not hand the plebeian a reply, and instead chose for herself a breakfast of juice, sausages, eggs and a... baked potato. Thank all the gods some foods remained the same, even if the potato looked a little over baked and didn't have the glossy red skins of their Figaro cousins.

The day was starting off right, and after her brief conversation with Roxas, Naminé was feeling better. Much better. So much better that she actually ate, deciding to have her nap during the next shift. It was the visitor's shift, which meant she could choose her next shift freely.

No one visited her anyway. Her patient file made it clear that even in her fabricated life, she had no one.

"It's so nice to see you awake during this hour, Sarah," The nurse cooed, not used to seeing Naminé active in the morning. She quickly chose her breakfast, just a normal one of juice, sausages, eggs, and a baked potato.

But now, where to sit? She spotted Luxord speaking to a dark-haired woman, but since he seemed occupied, Naminé ended up sitting next to a woman who was having the exact same thing (not that there was much variety to begin with).

"Do you mind if I sit here?" She smiled slightly. The woman looked like she could use a friendly face, although Naminé hoped she was misreading boredom for annoyance.

Celes looked up from considering her sausages and returned the girl's slight smile with one of her own. "Certainly, I do not mind in the least." Anything was better than considering what 'surprise' they had in store for her. Celes motioned for the girl to sit and sat back.

She had seen the young girl before, hadn't she? Celes took a bite of her eggs and continued to think. "You are the girl that I've seen with Luxord, are you not?"

The witch looked up in surprise when the woman she sat with mentioned Luxord. Ah, so she was a friend of Luxord's? Naminé had seen her around, of course, but had never spoken to her and didn't know. It was a pleasant surprise, to say the least.

"Yes, I'm Naminé," She introduced herself, holding out a hand. "It's very nice to meet you, Miss...?"

Come to think of it, Naminé hadn't seen Luxord in quite some time, and she only saw traces of him in the bulletin board. She knew that they did not have the same friendship as they did before, because of what happened with Kairi and Luxord's concern over it... but she still valued Luxord as a friend. Perhaps this woman had seen him recently?

His conversation this morning had been a blur, but at least Momo had done most of the talking. The nurse helped him back into his chair, which he wasn't thrilled about, but with the way his legs still wobbled and the room spun, it was probably better that way.

The nurse wheeled him back down to the cafeteria, leaving him at a table while she fetched him a meal of waffles, sausage, bacon, and eggs. She set a large glass of orange juice in front of him as well and gave him the same advice everyone else seemed to have told him already, "make sure you eat it all!" He honestly wasn't sure it would all fit. He wanted to just lie down and rest on the table, but he'd probably wind up with his hair all full of syrup if he did. This was worse than his hangover in Outo by far.

With hands that only shook slightly, he started cutting up his waffle, going for the sugary sweets first.

Ururu felt better by the time she went into the cafeteria; Kurogane had said he'd talk to Fai-san, and that was a good thing. And Shiki was just as determined to help. All in all, it had been a good morning, which the little girl needed after last night.

It wasn't so nice to see Fai-san in a wheelchair again though. Ururu immediately wondered what had happened, and asked the nurse who had fixed her tray (since Ururu only had use of one arm) if she could sit with the man. So a few moments later, the little girl moved into the seat beside him.

"Good morning Fai-san." Ururu grew even more concerned when she saw the man's hands shaking. What had happened last night? Had all of her friends gotten hurt? The little girl worried a bit, but she knew her worrying made others worried, so she tried not to show she was worrying, or worrying about not worrying. Instead, she held up her fork with her good hand.

"Would you like me to cut your waffles for you?" Waffles weren't hard to cut, so it would be okay.

"Ururu, good morning to you too," he replied, smile faint. It was hard to see her hurt and know he might've been able to stop it.

Even if she was only a tiny little girl, it was still one of the hardest things in the world to tell her 'no.' Or perhaps it was for that very reason that he found it so difficult. But when he saw the poor girl's arm wrapped up in a sling, he was caught between a rock and a hard place.

"It's ok," he assured her, taking a big bite and hoping that was enough to keep her from worrying, at least for the time being. "I'm just a little tired. Do you need any help with yours?" he added, once he'd swallowed it down.

Fai-san was eating, and that was a good thing. Just as the man had hoped, it made Ururu worry a little less, and the girl shook her head. "That's okay. I can do it." And she could, even with just a fork. It wasn't the neatest thing, because the waffle moved a little, but it worked well enough.

Ururu's mood was of course helped by thinking about her talk with Kurogane and Shiki. Ururu made sure to eat a bite of her waffle, then looked up at Fai. "Kurogane-san, Shiki-san, and I were talking before. They want to be in our group too." The little girl paused, then corrected her statement. "Well, Shiki-san does. Kurogane-san said he wanted to talk to you first. But he said that after he said no, and then he didn't say no again. That's a good thing, right?"

"What do you mean 'she's been released??'"

Since seeing the note on the bulletin, the chef of the Strawhat crew was not a happy camper. He was furious - demanding the attention of any nearby staff member and then refusing to listen to their explanation.

"She wasn't released, damn it! Where have you taken her??" Sanji knew Nami had been upset with their situation, worrying more than any of them that they would never make it back to the Grand Line, but she wouldn't have given in to their fake stories! ...Would she?

No. He refused to believe it - to acknowledge it. They'd done something with her, and he was going to find out what.

Morning shift had been pleasant, quite a change from the norm. But Allen would trade it all for an extra run through the breakfast buffet line. Just entering the room made his mouth water and was enough to make him forget his troubles, if only for a few minutes.

Once he had a heaping tray full of everything he could fit on it, he glanced around for a seat. The place was pretty empty, so Sanji's loud and angry words made him easy to spot. It was odd, usually Sanji was the calm voice of reason, he hadn't seen the man get upset much.

"Ah- M-mister Sanji?" He set his heaping tray down. "I- You- You have to calm down or you'll be sedated!"

misterprince October 14 2008, 21:29:20 UTC
Half of what Allen said didn't even register with Sanji, though he did glance briefly in his direction just to respond with "I AM calm!" which was pretty silly given the circumstances. What he really meant was that they hadn't seen the full force of his anger yet, though this was soon to change.

What had Nami's roommate said? That she hadn't been well prior to her disappearance? It had obviously been brainwashing of some sort, and she'd been trying to fight back. That had to be it! Oh, his poor sweet Nami!

Sanji would never harm the nurses - they were unfortunately female and his personal morals wouldn't allow it - but the orderlies were another matter. With an indecipherable roar, he swung a leg around at the nearest one.

damned_nurses October 14 2008, 22:38:51 UTC
They'd been watching him, but not quite expecting the sudden burst of violence. The orderly let out a surprised cry of pain when Sanji's kick connected. Just as quickly as it had, however, another large man came up behind the out-of-control patient and grabbed him around the chest, giving a third orderly an opportunity to go for his legs

"Mr Prince!" The dismayed nurse frowned, her hands busy preparing a sedation needle. "I understand you're upset, but really. You should know better. There's no call for such behavior!"
