The patient corridor widened out as it hit the Main Hall. Patients were already moving about, his senses told him, but he was unable to identify who they were. Qui-Gon moved on in the darkness.
The sudden expansion indicated Ken was close. He merely needed to pass a stair and a couple of doors, and the Sun Room would be within reach. Without a pause, the child ran left, his slippers slapping quietly against the tile.
Callisto didn't have her light on at the moment. This hall was open and easy enough to navigate without it. Besides, she didn't want to draw too much attention to herself straight off the bat.
The Sun Room wasn't far, and the hallways didn't look too crowded yet. He hadn't seen Goku either so far, but the chimp had an uncanny sense of smell; he'd catch up.
Might as well leave him something to make it easier.
Sanzo drew out the cigarette box, tapped out a stick, and lit it, tossing the used match on the ground. He ground it out with a heel. The familiar scent of cigarette smoke filled the air, the tang of the cigarette on his tongue.
There was the smell of smoke in the air suddenly, and Callisto's head shot up. It didn't smell like a typical fire. A pipe? Perhaps one of the patients... She flicked her light on then, moving the beam quickly across the corridor and finding Sanzo almost immediately.
Making a face, the blond approached the monk with obvious disdain. "Are you looking for attention?"
He seemed to have healed up somewhat, at least, so he might not be a complete burden.
Sanzo scowled at her as she came over. He was, but not from her.
It was too bad Qui-Gon hadn't taken both artifacts. Sanzo wouldn't have had to put up with Callisto tagging along. The monk was never much for women - or people in general - but Callisto was mouthy enough to rank up there in being pretty damn annoying.
Gojyo probably would've drooled all over her type, which really just further cemented the fact that the roach was an idiot.
As things turned out, he was stuck having to deal with her for tonight.
"That's none of your damn business." Sanzo grunted. He took another drag, followed shortly by more smoke, as if to prove a point. Which was that he didn't give a shit right now about the smell.
"Not really, but that's always a nice bonus." Callisto leaned closer to the man, trying to get a better look at what exactly he had in his mouth. It looked to be merely a small stick that made smoke.
"What is that?" she finally asked, making a sharp grab for the cigarette.
The halls on the western half of the institute were very familiar to the lone shinigami as she padded through the darkness. She was certain at this point she could walk them with her eyes closed. Sandals making virtually no noise in the hallway, Momo passed by two others and on toward the Sun Room.
Miraculously, Goku managed to remain sprinting while opening a door and not slamming himself into a wall (he liked to call it reflexes). Some of his momentum was lost doing that, but, small price to pay. He figured he could just continue running along anyway and it wouldn't do much of anything. Sanzo's scent was still clear and fresh, something that came as a pleasant surprise. Usually by the time he came out of his room there'd be too many smells around to distinguish between them all. It made Sanzo harder to track however it still gave him something to do.
He'd wanted to find Hakkai in a similar way, only... Well, too many footsteps and scents plus the bleach in the morning. It erased all traces of what everyone did, which was probably why they used it.
Goku kept running, too focused on actually moving forward to notice that he'd passed the person he was "following" in the first place.
