Day 21: Library

Jan 16, 2007 10:29

Dreamless slumbers were easy. There was no thought, no images of people or places you knew or ones conjured by your imagination. It was simply you in darkness until your eyelids cracked and the darkness gave way to a light you were unwilling to greet ( Read more... )

Zelos casually flirted with his nurse, as he always did, as she led him into the library. It seemed he was one of the first patients to arrive, with the exception of one other man. He looked like his dog had just died, though, and Zelos decided to leave him alone for now.

Instead, he walked along the stacks looking at the book titles. He didn't recognize any of them, much less the authors. He'd seen some interesting things on the bulletin board - most people believed they were in someplace called "America". Wherever they were, they weren't in Tethe'alla.

He continued to wander the stacks for a bit, seeing if there was anything that might interest him.

Or if there were any naughty mags.

This place was insane. Lyta realized she thought that at least once an hour, but it was true. This was a madhouse, and not in the way it pretended to be. She was sick of being pushed around and told where to go and when.

And now she was in the library. Great. She scanned the books idly, all of them from the twentieth century or before. She had gone back in time. Great. Had telepaths even been bred into the human race yet?

She noticed a man browsing the books.

"Hey. I ran into you my firt night here, didn't I?"

Zelos turned to the woman -- yep, it was the cutie from the first night. She'd been so uptight, and yet here she was seeking him out again. Heh.

"That's right, even though I didn't catch your name, hunny."

"First off, I'm not your hunny," Lyta said, raising an eyebrow and giving him a less than amused glare. "And second, I never gave you my name. I see you haven't learned any manners in the last couple of days."

She'd forgotten what a pig he was. Great.

"But somehow you managed not to die."

At least by the time Lust was gently steered away by her nurse, River seemed to be doing better. The girl was unpredictable at best, and Lust had felt somewhat awkward with the brother and that other man hovering about.

She'd check on the girl if she could, but later. The shook off her damned nurse, ignoring suggestions of books. She didn't care much either way. She had little interest in fiction - the few bodice rippers that she'd read before had held no interest. At least the room wasn't crowded. A rather large man who looked less than happy and some strange man with long, outrageous hair were the only occupants so far.

Lust cast a glance at each and moved to a bookshelf, eyeing the titles carefully. Perhaps there'd be something useful.

Well, if VIII just had to ask the most unimportant questions and waste valuable time. It was not Luxord's job to answer the redhead's every single miniscule inquiry, and as such, he did nothing. When Nursey abounded onto the scene, he gave no hassle and simple followed the woman to the next location.

Ahh, a library. Finally some place pleasantly familiar. However, this was no time for literature as he could easily steal a book when they weren't looking; this was about information. Information must be gathered to assess the surroundings better than with thine own two eyes, as well as making a few allies for the sake of… well. The time comes when people must be sacrificed for the greater good ( ... )

Lust glanced up when someone spoke to her, eyeing the man critically. He was rather intense looking, attractive, and he seemed intelligent. All in all, hardly a bad companion for a bit of conversation.

"An ancient religious text." Lust picked up the book and glanced over it. Her master had had one of them, a great dusty old thing bound in leather. Lust's knowledge of Christianity was sparse.

"I suppose it would be fiction to those who don't follow its tenets. I'm afraid I've never read it myself - I've heard it's rather a dull read. I'm Lust."

He glanced down at the book almost curiously. He had read it before, years ad years ago, but good chance it would help him now. "You probably should not make such an attempt. Pretentious, it is. Rather useless here, though some might be as devoted to take one's tongue out for uttering such words." Or burn down a city.

That name just made his smirk grow wider, taking his attention away from the worn paper. How intruging. "I would have gathered as such from your image, though for that to be your actual name?" He chuckled, leaning himself against the bookshelf. "Your parents had high expectations of you."

"You may call me Luxord, if you wish."

The day he figured out how to get out of here, Sasuke was going to be out like a shot.

But first, he was going to kill his nurse. Every time a conversation started getting interesting, the slightly metallic voice of the intercom announced some other inane activity, and the cardboard smile came and gently but insistently hurried him away without giving him an opportunity to finish the conversation.

Glaring at her until her smile became slightly strained and she left ("Please interest yourself in the books, Sean. Reading is good for young minds!"), he found a corner with a good view and settled into the chair. There were two people he needed to speak with, and two more from whom he wanted information ( ... )

The intercom voiced had blared that destructive patients would not be tolerated. It seemed like something that should be kept in mind.

Nurses had interrupted his conversation with Gaara in order to usher everyone off to another place, and as irritating as that was, he was working hard to keep in mind that he should not lose his temper so easily. Naruto was beginning to feel the effects of an early-morning drugging wear off. It would suck to get another shot after waiting this out.

He only grunted to his nurse when she asked him if he was feeling better, instantly annoyed. It was going to be much harder than he thought. She left him once they reached the library, but not before patting his head once, much to his horror. What was that about? He wasn't some five-year-old kid. Naruto shook his head, irritation plain on his face, and shoved his hands into his pockets before walking further into the room ( ... )

He'd seen the flash of blond and groaned to himself. Of course Naruto arrived first. Because he was Uchiha Sasuke, and the same irascible fates that had, with malicious glee, put Naruto into his life when he was twelve had taken it upon themselves to throw him back again, at an even less opportune time. Haku was a dead man walking, therefore interesting. Gaara was possibly another, Kazekage, and had recent experience with Akatsuki.

To Sasuke, Naruto might as well complete the trio of dead people, but Naruto was uninteresting dead. Sasuke couldn't afford to think otherwise.

He was walking more steadily, so the drugs had apparently worn off. The dosage was designed for an hour or so, then. Sasuke hadn't sensed any chakra, especially not the demon fox's (and he'd recognize that chakra anywhere by now), so it couldn't have been the Kyuubi's power. Unless it had gotten a great deal more subtle over the years -- with Naruto as its host, that was highly unlikely ( ... )

Sasuke did nothing for a short while except continue to take care of his wound and continue to pretend the space which Naruto occupied was actually made out of thin air. His blood felt hot and his pulse sped up. It was still utterly bizarre not to feel the response from kyuubi in turn and he was still unsure how to feel about that.

The demon had had pros and cons. More importantly. They were in this bizarre situation, both victims of it, and Sasuke was still being a giant jackass. Naruto only had himself to blame: he set himself up for the fall, knowing pretty well what he was doing, and still unable to help himself. His eyes narrowed imperceptibly, flashing blue while instinct told him they were flashing red. His shoulders tensed. His heart beat in his ears.

An inward voice told him he was such a fool and he could only chime back weakly: I know, I know.

Then stronger. I just don't care.Naruto watched Sasuke do nothing, stood still and gripped his hands into fists. Though they were still shoved tightly in pockets. It was as if ( ... )

Renji followed his assigned handler with no comment. Compared to the gingerbread thingy of the day before, he was more than happy to be going to the library. He didn't read much, but when he had the time and motivation, he did kind of enjoy it.

...not that he intended to do a lot of reading. Libraries were also good for quiet discussion.

He ignored the non-fiction for now, since he was mostly just going to kill time until he found one of the people he was looking for. He was pleased that he recognized at least a few of the books on the shelves, and picked up The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes. Rather than sitting, he leaned against the end of one of the bookshelves, somewhere he'd be easy enough for the dead guy he was waiting for to see him - and failing that, somewhere he'd be able to spot the non-Elena confused blonde if she went wandering by.

He allowed himself a bemused smile as he turned to "The Resident Patient" and started reading. He knew the story well enough he could pay attention to what was going on around him, too.

Claire followed her nurse into the library silently, still thinking about everything she'd learned at breakfast. The most pressing thing in her mind was the fact that Wesker seemed so much like her. There were a lot of things she wanted to ask him, but later.

Right now, she wandered, wondering about the people she was to meet here. She didn't disappear into the stacks, so she would be easy to see. Instead, she simply let her eyes skim over the various titles. They were all books she'd find in a Barnes & Noble - this really was America, then...?

Renji spotted (he hoped) one of the people he was looking for pretty quickly, and decided to go up to say hi. The other guy was looking for him; tall and tattooed, he figured he'd be easy to spot even if he was talking to someone else, as long as they didn't hide or something.

He closed the book and stepped behind the girl. "Funny," he said. "You don't look that confused."

Claire whipped around at the sound of the voice. A red haired man covered in tattoos -- so this is who she'd been talking to on the bulletin board?

She gave him a small, playful grin. "Really? And here I thought I had that 'dumb blond' look."

He grinned right back at her. "You're doin' okay so far, I think. Don't look dumb to me." He tucked the book under his arm, and bowed slightly, out of habit. "I'm Renji."
