Nightshift 34: West Wing, Hall 2-A

Aug 15, 2008 00:31

[from here]One bright side of night was that Seiya didn't have to worry about sitting around brooding too much. Even her concerns for Usagi and Ami were distant ones at the moment, situations she wasn't a part of and couldn't help. All her attention was on the dark hallway they were walking down, possibly the first guests that night, and keeping ( Read more... )

Leon jiggled the handle of the first door they passed, and found it still locked. "Either no one's been this way yet, or they didn't bother with this room." Hard to tell which it was, since Leon couldn't remember there being anything particularly useful in this hallway.

At least they were still in an area that allowed for reasonably easy retreat. Once they got out onto the patio, the path was less direct and full of obstacles.

Quiet, still. She glanced over as Leon tried the door handle. The fact that the door hadn't been opened was a little comforting, but not completely. After all, their destination was further along, and she had no interest in trying to break through that door either.

Forward past the bathrooms, and the door to the outside showed no signs of being forced open but also no signs of any locks. "I suppose we'll see if we were first when we get there."

There wasn't anyone in this hallway. Keeping low and cautious, but fast, Melissa headed straight down the corridor. The sense of two tastes permeated faintly still, as if other people had been down here already. There wasn't any terror, nor much of any emotion that left a lingering print, but that didn't drop Melissa's guard. It was very possible that whoever had been down here just hadn't been attacked, despite there being something lurking in the shadows.

Lia kept the beam of her flashlight angled low, toward the ground. The possibility of danger from above here, inside, did not occur to her, and it would make it less likely that she might temporarily night-blind other patients that way. Unless they were lying prone, of course, and that in itself would be more worrisome than the loss of night vision. She refrained from looking back over her shoulder, but was acutely aware of the dark space at her back as they proceeded down the hall.

Melissa's wariness of the surrounding area was greatly increased after last night with the ape monsters, and the fact that both herself and Lia were at a physical disadvantage thanks to said ape monsters. They made it, however, to the end of the hallway without being attacked by anything, which surprised Melissa perhaps more than it should have.

The door at the end was closed, but not locked, as a quick twist of the handle quickly proved. While Melissa didn't know for sure if it was meant to be locked, it still worried her slightly that it wasn't better guarded. She slowly pushed the door open, every sense alert to anything that might lie beyond.

Lia stepped back out from the patio, stepping several paces into the hallway before she paused to scan for any changes taken place during their brief period of searching. There was at the least no sign of any monsters still, and once assure of that she continued forward, considering carefully the unopened doors along the hall.

Spear armed and ready, Ken led Leon into the hallway's entrance. He noticed movement of shadows at the end of corridor, but considering they had been passed by other patients, the child tried not to be overly paranoid.

"The kitchen's beyond the door at the end of the hallway," he said softly. "Are you trying to get weapons from there?"

Leon nodded, shifting his grip on the bat. "Yeah," he said. "Knives, specifically." He glanced at Ken's spear with no small amount of interest. "Where'd you get that?" he asked curiously. "Doesn't seem like the kind of thing they'd be keeping in a broom closet."

"This?" Ken also glanced at the spear in surprise, although he knew the feeling was rather silly. What else could Leon be talking about? "One of the 'weavers' lent it to me, at least until he can create a weapon for my friend." Adelheid had also mentioned perhaps making a spear more suitable for a person of Ken's stature, but the boy did not want to take that as a guarantee.

"I'm only hoping to pick up some miscellaneous items so feel free to take any knives we run across, Leon-san," he finished.

Weavers? Leon thought for a moment as Ken described the situation. Hitsugaya had mentioned a few people who could make weapons somehow... maybe that's what he was talking about.

"Thanks," he said in response to the comment about the knives. "One or two should work well enough." He sighed, and shook his head. "I'd feel a lot better with a gun, but I'll take what I can get, I suppose." Realizing that comment might sound a bit odd to Ken, Leon quickly added. "I used to be a cop."

Allelujah headed straight up the corridor ahead, deciding to be methodical about this. He could look and then go off to the left when he came back. The right had sounded somewhat threatening and Hallelujah didn't trust it so he'd avoid that direction altogether.

He quickly retraced his steps back along the corridor the way he'd come. He could try the other way now at least.

This corridor was a little more busy than the one they had just left. None of the patients appeared to be a threat, so Scar let them be.

There were about three doors lining the left wall, and one on the far end of the corridor. As they couldn't investigate all doors at the same time, he moved over to the nearest and pulled on it's handle.

It was stuck. "Ah, splendid." he muttered, not bothering to hide any sarcasm.

Another fruitless tug on the door handle, but it wouldn't budge. It seemed the troublesome obstacle could be broken with the right amount of force, however. The lock (as human called it) was in a similar state to the doors he had to break open before.

All of the halls were beginning to blur together in Elincia's mind. They all looked nearly exactly the same, quite nondescript really. She was suddenly grateful she was with someone who knew more about the place than she did. Getting lost was the last thing she wanted to do.

She followed Scar to the door and looked on as he tried to open it. It seemed like it wouldn't open. There being a key nearby was unlikely...

"Hmm." She moved closer to get a closer look at the door. "A lockpick would be useful now..." Ah, what else did the thieves do when they wanted to open doors again... She was having a hard time remembering what she had seen them do. "Do... Do you think this door could be broken open?"

"And I don't suppose you have one of these lockpicks with you." Scar answered dryly. Whatever a 'lockpick' was, for that matter. "In any case, I'd say we hardly have much of a choice."

Even despite that they would alert anything with ears of their arrival with such noise. Not to mention that he most likely was going to be the one opening the blasted object. Because he always had to do everything himself! Yes, his expectations of humans had sunken that low already.

One, just one thing he could use those brainless hyenas for, and they were nowhere to be seen. Not that there was a lack of brainless people around Landels. There were, unfortunately, a lack of people brainless enough to slam themselves against doors.

"Unless, of course, you have a better idea."

"Unfortunately, I don't. It's thieves that usually carry them. I wouldn't even know where to find one..." Elincia sighed. She didn't usually approve of thieves, but one of them would have been very welcome at the moment. Though, really, just about anyone who could help would have been welcome.

It did seem like they had no choice. "No." She shook her head. "I can't think of anything else we could do to get the door open either, so I suppose breaking the door or the lock is indeed our only choice."

But what would they break it with? Slamming against the door wouldn't do much good and neither of them had anything suitable to breaking open doors. "All we have to decide now is how to break it.."
