Nightshift 33: Main Hallway, 1-West

Jul 09, 2008 09:48

[from here]He knew he was out early now; the main hallways like this one usually had at least one or two other people scurrying about even when he was rushing through. Not yet though, but that was just as well. He took the usual right and kept along the wall just in case his senses just weren't picking up on some kind of threat. Being quick did not ( Read more... )

[ Coming from here.]

Daemon continued onwards until he came out into the wide corridor where he'd arranged to meet John earlier. A quick flick of his flashlight beam up and down the hall told him he'd reached this place first, and he settled back into the shadows to wait for the boy to arrive. The two jagged-ended poles he carried he laid to one side - one for himself and one for the boy. It had been a relief to find the closet repaired after he'd broken it last night. So generous of them to give him another length of wood to snap into a makeshift spear.

They'd come in handy if they did manage to find some spiders.

John jogged up to Daemon, smiling when he realized that he was alone and that there didn't seem to be any immediate danger. "Hey," he said, shifting the pillow case on his shoulder. "I hope I didn't keep you waiting. I came as soon as I could."

Daemon's lips curved faintly as the boy approached him and he inclined his head in greeting. "I only got here a few moments ago myself," he replied, before his golden gaze flickered to the sack John carried. "What are you carrying?"

"Oh, I came prepared," he said, swinging the pillow case down. "Last night the pillowcase saved me from being mauled by a huge cat so I figured it was worth bringing with me today. I've the radio in case there's some sort of broadcast. The notebook in case I need to make a note of something and pens, because, well, what good is a notebook without something to write with. A t-shirt that could be used as bandaging or a sling. My belt, this shoe, and my flashlight."

John looked up at Daemon. "Why, do you think it's too much?"

Daemon chuckled in amusement as the boy rattled off what he'd brought. "The pens also make for good weapons," he added, then reached out and retrieved one of the jagged pole's handing it over to the boy. "Here. This will work a little better on spiders, however. You don't want to let them get too close to you."

John tossed the shoe into the bag before taking the pole. "What I'd really like is a semi-automatic but a pole is better then the shoe," he said. "Wolfram and I were nearly trapped in the spider's web last night. Luckily, you can smash a spider as big as a small car as well as you can the normal sized ones."

"Semi-automatic?" Daemon echoed, looking puzzled. "Semi-automatic what?"

He digested the size of the spiders without blinking, although it came as a bit of a surprise. He hadn't anticipated them being quite that large. He wondered if they were simple predators or if they were more sentient than that?

"The web you were trapped in... was it strong?"

"It's a gun," John explained. "Or, rather, a type of gun. My mom and I have quite an arsenal back home."

He was getting too close to the truth. John needed to switch topics and he was grateful when Daemon asked about the spider once more.

"It was strong enough," John replied, shuddering at the thought. "It stuck to my shoes and legs, making it difficult to walk a bit. If that stuff had gotten on me more, I would have been in trouble."

"Good," Daemon replied thoughtfully, then chuckled. "Not that you got caught, of course, but it sounds as if it might work for what I need it for. Are you ready to head out?"

"If you're sure you really want to see a spider," John shrugged, gripping the broken pole tight. "I'm ready to get started."

"Alright, then," Daemon modded with a faint smile. "Would you like to lead the way, or navigate from behind me?" he offered, figuring he'd give the boy the options. He wasn't sure how skilled a fighter the boy was, after all.

"I'll lead," John said, hefting his pillow case over his shoulder once more. "We need to be careful once we get to the hallway above us, though. That's where the cat was."

He glanced at the opposite side of the hall, seeing the doors that had lead to the staircase. "This way," John directed, walking swiftly across the hall.
