Shadow stepped into the doctor's office and was surprised to find how ordinary it looked. There was a desk and a few chairs, a bookshelf filled with different books and papers. "I don't know," Valyn admitted, following his cousin into the office. "I never saw where my doctor kept them. He had it on his desk when I came in, and he didn't put it away where I could see."

It was a perfectly normal room, he decided, looking around. "But the desk seems a likely choice."

"Why don't you two start with the desk, then?" Shana asked, moving around behind the piece of furniture to inspect the shelves behind the desk with a curious eye.

Shining her flashlight on the bound covers, the titles made little sense to her, but she plucked one out anyway, flipping through the pages to find what looked to be notes on the human bodies and various types of illness and plagues.

"Perhaps they're just for show," Shadow remarked, tugging at the drawers. The first that opened yielded a bunch of blue pens and some yellow sticks that seemed to leave yellow ink behind. Nothing very useful, but he hadn't expected it to be that easy. He moved down to another drawer and tugged, finding that it was stuck with a tiny lock on the front.

"Look for any secret entrances while you're at it," Shadow told Keman and Shana as he stared at the lock, wondering if he could spare the magic to open it or not.
