The hallway felt longer than it should have - probably because he couldn't see jackshit - and Sanzo was growing more and more impatient.
This wouldn't have happened if Homura had kept his hands to himself. Better yet, if he'd never wormed his way into the monk's life.
Sanzo's hand collided suddenly with the closed door at the end of the hall, and fumbling further downward, grasped the handle. He gave a jerk.
The door didn't give. Sanzo tried again, with the same result.
Locked?
The frustration and irritation was welling up. Sanzo slammed his fist against the door, more to try and get that anger out somehow rather than any attempt to break the door down.
This night was getting worse and worse, and he knew exactly who to thank for that.
The echos from his fist hitting the door hadn't even quite faded yet, when there was an answering noise. There was a heavy click, as something within the door shifting.
Sanzo paused. That hadn't been from the single blow he'd dealt to the door, which meant that there was someone outside. There wasn't any telling if it was an enemy or not.
Still. He'd rather deal with another patient than to continue wasting his time in the darkness.
The priest pulled the door open, and half-covered his eyes with a hand against the flashlight that was pointed at the ground. He'd been in darkness for the entire day and up till now, and it was blinding.
Despite this, he could recognize the features he could make out, as his eyes adjusted.
"Sanzo," Qui-Gon said. He'd been right. Glancing over the man, he couldn't see any signs of fresh injuries, although his outfit was rumpled. "Are you alright? What were you doing locked in there?"
He glanced around as he spoke. The Force didn't pick up any immediate threats, although with the way things were right now, Qui-Gon didn't think they would have much warning until something was almost on top of them. Still, he was concerned about Sanzo. Somehow he'd been trapped here. How was the question: the staff during the day dealing with an "unruly" patient, or a mishap during the night. He could very well be the bait for a rescue party for all Qui-Gon knew.
Perhaps it would be best if they kept on the move. Qui-Gon motioned for Sanzo to walk with him, keeping the Earthian glowrod shielded once he noticed that the other patient was wincing at the light.
Daemon slipped into the entry room, sweeping his flashlight beam around him. All was silent, and while one door was open to reveal a small chamber within, all the rest looked as if they were sealed and closed.
Lucivar snorted as he followed Daemon into the hallway. "Of course it opened for Daemon," he murmured, shaking his head. He was tense and ready for a fight but the new hallway was interesting.
"Do all of these doors lead to other hallways?" he wondered out loud, walking towards the closest door and wiggling the doorknob, noticing the heavy locks.
Keeping oriented in the maze of corridors in this building was a difficult task, but Saetan shook his head. "I don't think there's room for that." Of course, he could be wrong. So many other things about Landel's Institute didn't make sense. The upper floor could be shaped entirely different from the lower one for all that he knew for certain.
"Split up, we can move through them quicker," Daemon advised with a quick shake of his head. "It shouldn't be hard - a quick glance at the lock should tell us which we can open and which we cannot. The first door we tried had brand new metal, while the one leading to this room was aged and well-used. I've noticed a similar pattern in the rooms I could get into downstairs, on the nights I explored."
He moved across the room to the far wall, beginning to try the handles there, finding the first several tightly locked.
Momo moved into the hallway, low to the ground, expecting to find something nasty waiting for them, only to find nothing. The hallways was empty. The shinigami stopped in the middle of the hall and cast her eyes upward, looking for the spider that had tried to make her its meal. Again... nothing.
It was downright creepy.
Sure, the head doctor had said there weren't going to be any monsters, but to actually find none... Internally, she was shivering a little. Maybe they just weren't visible.
"Cover me," she said, relaxing her body a little as she tried to bring the area's spirit threads into focus. If there was anything with a soul around, she'd be able to see them.
Hokuto had no trouble remembering to keep her eyes moving; actually, keeping her attention on one spot would have been a problem. She pulled her shovel around and held it like a bo, every sense on high alert. I always said silence was scarier than sound... can someone play the soundtrack to Evil Dead or something over the intercom?
Archer carefully scanned the corridor with his flashlight. Nothing so far. In some ways that was even more unsettling. This was how they built suspense in horror flicks, right before something killed an unsuspecting victim.
He glanced behind him.
Nope, no flesh eating cannibals. Just Hokuto.
He took a step forward alongside Momo, in her specified formation.
Completely silent... Where's the groaning zombies, drooling monsters, or creepy music? Geez, I'm kinda dissappointed.
Despite his thoughts Archer's eyes remained sharp, while the Vice Captain went about her business.
Had the shinigami been able to read either of her teammate's minds, she would have wondered why the servant and the girl were thinking along the same lines, thoughts that Momo didn't quite get. Of course, she knew what a zombie was, but why they would suddenly be worried about them jumping out of the shadows. In fact, a zombie would have been welcomed, not to mention easily dealt with. This particular shinigami was lucky there wasn't movie time in the institute's normal activity repertoire

And... why weren't there more people here?
