Nightshift 31; Courtyard

[From here]Climbing up the wall was about as dignified as he'd expected, although it could still have been worse. The garden trowel as a climbing tool actually did help a little, and while he would regret the entire decision to go on this insane mission by morning, for now his muscles weren't aching too badly as he made his way to the top. As more and more insects lit onto his back and shoulders, Bridget bit hard on the inside of his mouth to keep from crying. His bare skin was burning and he could feel blood running down. Was this what had become of Bridget, The Bounty Hunter? He didn't bother swatting at the bugs, they seemed to bite and leave faster than he could register.

Until they were inside, and perhaps not even then, should they not manage to close the doors in time, the insects kept eye on their prey, lured by the blood, the hunger that was never sated. Once both dedicated themselves to running, the attack eased, but only because the insects had to work harder to keep up, couldn't fall into a pattern of circling and attacking, or surrounding their prey.

But there was time. One especially had suffered, and soon they would stop. Could they close the doors in time, could they fight? The insects had no such cares. They only wanted the meal.

She reached for the door handle and pulled, hoping it wouldn't slow them down too much. She could already feel Bridget starting to lag behind. There hadn't been any more attacks on her, but... but was he alright?!

There was no time to check, not until they were safely inside. With one last burst of adrenaline, she pulled Bridget inside and slammed the door shut.
