Nightshift 31: West Wing, Hall A (first floor)

[from here]The soft light of the flashlight drew Zoro's attention to the doors along the hallway. He tried one of the knobs simply because it was there and, finding it locked, grew curious. People only locked things when there were things to hide. He'd do some treasure hunting then while he was here ( Read more... )

The Amazon had been aimlessly (or so he felt) wandering for what seemed like a long time when he made the split second decision to head down an unfamiliar hallway.

...and ran into a familiar face.

"Zoro!" He cried, a smile beaming through. How wonderful it was to meet up with someone he knew in the dark! Surely working together they could find a way out! He readjusted his glasses and grasped the other's hand with his good one. "It's been too long! How have you been?!"

The sound of someone calling his name stopped Zoro in his tracks. A well grounded foot stopped him from tipping straight into the room and it was only after a few cautious moments that the pirate finally recognized who was holding his... hand.

Well, at least he was grabbing at the right person this time.

"Uh." Lost at sea pun intended for a while before it sunk in that Mousse was trying to exchange pleasantries with him, Zoro blinked once, twice, then nodded. "Fine." He looked behind him, into the dark room he'd just opened up. "Just breaking into rooms."

Mousse nodded eagerly and peered into the room as well, releasing the pirate to steady his glasses. "To find a way out-- of course!" The Amazon had it all figured out as far as he was concerned. "How many of these rooms have you tried? Surely if we both look, we will find a passage!"

Assuming that was what Zoro was up to; details didn't bother Mousse.

Details didn't bother Zoro either. He wasn't going to act like he was searching for a way out but he wasn't going to try to correct Mousse's assumptions either. In Zoro's experience, no one ever really listened to him until it mattered anyway.

"This is the first one," Glancing at Mousse to make sure he really wanted to help, Zoro shrugged and aimed his flashlight inside the room. "Come on."

"Hm. This one?" Zoro tried the door right next to the one they'd just been in and, no surprise to him, it was locked.

He rammed his shoulder against it, grunting.

Mousse followed behind Zoro, looking perplexed as Zoro rammed the door. Zoro didn't strike him as particularly weak, so that meant the lock was remarkably strong. Perhaps all it would take would be some help from the Amazon.

"Right," he said in response to the question and joined Zoro in slamming against the door.

The lock broke with help and Zoro found that he was a little miffed at himself for needing it in the first place.

Silently, he made his way inside the room.

Mousse stopped and waited for Zoro to join him before asking the obvious question, "Which room now?"

He doubted, if this hall was filled with offices, that they would find a way out there. Still, there might be something interesting in one of the rooms. Only one way to find out.

"This one." Anyone who knew Zoro well enough would have felt a chill run up their spine at the absolute certainty in his voice. That meant the swordsman had no idea where he was going. He was completely and utterly lost.

But still, he hid it well.

Putting his flashlight between his teeth in order to draw one of the bats at his side, Zoro narrowed his eyes at the door. Lifting the bat then bringing it down on the locking mechanism with careful precision, it took him two strong hits before he heard the chink of something breaking and one extra kick to get through the actual door.

Zoro scowled through his full mouth and put the bat back in with the other two. Inefficient. This whole place made it difficult to function properly.

... nah. If they found a way out, then they found a way out. If they didn't then he'd just have to keep looking for the basement. Simple.

Zoro mechanically made his way to the next room, breaking the door open in much the same way as he did with the last.

Mousse waited for Zoro to join him before he voiced a concern that had come to him through their continued exploration. "I am beginning to suspect there isn't a route out here. I mean, all we've come across are Doctor's offices." He tapped his chin. "Maybe it would make more sense to look somewhere else, closer to the outside walls?"

"That's what I'm looking for." Zoro replied, slightly frustrated in his own honest way. It was true. The pirate wasn't actively searching for offices, he'd just wanted to find a way to get to the basement. "I came from the other side--" He pointed down the wrong part of the hallway, "--but couldn't find anything so I started looking here."

He tried the door next to the one they'd just come out of and found that it was locked as well. After it was just a series of three doors with wider spaces between them. Zoro silently suspected a reason behind it. Why, however, he hadn't been at the institute long enough to tell.

"All the doors here seemed to be locked." And that itself was suspicious enough for Zoro to want to keep looking. He somehow didn't figure that he had to explain that part of it, though.

Mousse's brow furrowed with confusion. He'd come from where? But the rooms were... He didn't really get a chance to consider this as Zoro was quick to point out that the doors were locked and that he was looking for a way out, despite the Amazon's initial doubt. If Zoro said he was searching for an exit, that was good enough for Mousse.

"Should we take turns breaking them open?" If Zoro thought the way out was amongst these doors, then they were worth exploring.

"Don't see why not." Zoro answered, the misunderstanding that had just passed not quite hitting home.

Even in the dark, the door was an easy target for Zoro but he knocked on it anyway and asked Mousse: "You want this one?"
