NIGHTSHIFT 30: M41-M50 HALLWAY

Feb 26, 2008 10:13

[In M47]Artemis was particularly pleased at how the day had ended. Showering with his fellow underage males had been embarrassing and uncomfortable, but he'd ended on a good note--a wonderful, wonderful argument in which the opponent couldn't hit him. Perhaps the orderlies weren't so bad after all ( Read more... )

Leon listened to the Head Doctor's announcement with a strange, detached look on his face. The man on the radio-- Alec Doyle, apparently the one ally with any power that the patients had-- was dead.

"Damn it," he muttered. He wished like hell they'd made it to the library last night. Information, weapons, the man could have given them something, and now he was dead. He'd only been here a day, and already it seemed like the noose was tightening around him.

He shook his head and stood up, pulling on his sweater and heavier shoes. He grabbed his flashlight, his journal and pens, then headed out into the hall.

The conversation with Ashton had been interesting, for a variety of reasons. There was the whole issue with Dias, their weird relationship, and their altered memories to deal with, of course, but that was before anyone had tossed a visit from Celine into the mix. Claude couldn't help but wonder about the significance behind it all. Were Celine and his own father past victims of this place? They seemed too real to be mere rip-offs, but still...

At least Ashton had sounded like he'd enjoyed the visit. It was more than Claude could have said about his own, even if it'd been a good chance for him to try and make up for past mistakes. Even so, he knew he'd be a fool if he thought a short chat could make up for years of regret and resentment. And if it meant his father had been brainwashed, then it wasn't even worth it ( ... )

Luke caught sight of Claude's door and barely remembered to knock once before opening the door. Old habits died hard... He didn't see Guy on the way, so maybe the other blond was still on his way. Well, no use in just hanging around outside, right?

"Claude?" Luke softly called out, sticking his head through the door and trying to catch a glimpse of the blond.

Claude hadn't really paid attention to how long it'd taken Luke to show up, but he was pretty glad when he heard a knock at the door. The blond looked up from where he'd been sitting on his bed, offering Luke a grin. "Hey there!" he said brightly before rising to a stand. "Come on in. It's good to see you."

Well, in one piece, at any rate. Still, Claude knew those experiments could leave a lot of nasty side effects. He wished it were lighter in the room so he could get a better look at Luke. It'd seem awfully weird to go flashing his light in the guy's face.

"How're you feeling?" he asked at length.

Guy was pleased to see that his short trip to M44 had been made quickly enough that Luke apparently had only just gotten there - or so he guessed by the fact that his friend hadn't even walked inside yet.

What was of even more interest was the fact that Luke was decked out in his normal attire. Having not see his friend wearing that in over a year, it was really a nice sight for him, so Guy was smiling pretty widely as he walked up to Luke. "You look good!"

Beyond that, though, he had to wonder where these outfits were coming from. He hadn't seen his own in his room or anywhere else, so he was pretty curious. Had Claude, Luke, and Okita all found them somewhere and he had just missed out somehow? "Where'd that come from?" he asked. He tried to peer into the room to get a glimpse of Claude, but Luke being in the way made that a little difficult.

Well. That dinner hadn't been a complete waste of time; even if Mousse turned out to be incompetent, he couldn't be much worse than Valerie Gray had been at first, and she'd turned out so very well. Vlad didn't particularly need or want people stronger than him, just people willing to get between him and danger should it arise.

Speaking of danger... what an interesting message from the head doctor. He recognized the voice from the morning, although the daytime had primarily featured the voice of a nurse. Apparently he'd stabbed someone he didn't like, good for him. Perhaps if Vlad had been in the Institution longer he'd have known or cared who the 'doctor' was talking about; as it was, it just sounded like someone venting their emotions over an intercom to an inappropriate audience. The comment about a full month was more interesting. There was no evidence to support the doctor's claims, but Vlad certainly hadn't met anyone or read anyone claiming to be here longer than that ( ... )

Obi-Wan knew he should have expected Schuldig to have company. He also knew it wasn't the best idea to stick around, and so the Jedi had wasted no time in clearing out. He hadn't allowed himself much time to process the mysterious radio man's death, but he knew it was a significant development. The information that he'd had was now lost forever. And as unclear as his motives had been, he'd been one of the few people not trapped in the institute who'd actually done anything on their behalf ( ... )

Qui-Gon slowed his pace, keeping his voice down.

"I'm glad to see you are well," he said, reaching out for a moment and clasping Obi-Wan by the elbow.

He trusted Obi-Wan and knew him to be capable. But Qui-Gon knew that they were not at their strongest here. Every night they ran the risk of being taken for experiments and he couldn't help but worry for his friend. Just because he knew Obi-Wan could handle what was thrown at him didn't mean he wanted him to be tested. Not like this. Perhaps it was a little selfish to bask in that stark relief he felt at seeing Obi-Wan alive and well. He would just have to indulge himself.

There was also things that they needed to talk about. The murder of the man behind the radio, for one thing. Then there was the issue that they were armed, and that they probably couldn't do much better unless they happened to stumble upon their lightsabers in the mean time. The basement was still unexplored, as was the good portion of Landels ( ... )

"And I you," Obi-Wan replied with a small smile. But, of course he knew Qui-Gon was perfectly capable of taking care of himself. He hadn't had to worry about his former Master becoming involved in the riot (although it would have been so very like him to try to mediate some of the conflict). Still, it was a relief to see him standing there alive and well, especially considering how their last mission together had ended.

Obi-Wan would do what he could to make sure there wasn't a repeat of that ever again.

He knew it was possible that one of them would be taken for experiments one day. But in the meantime, they could look out for themselves and each other.

Obi-Wan got the impression that the older man had things he wanted to discuss, too. But it didn't seem like a good idea to stand in one place for too long. They'd already learned that it was the best way to become monster bait.

"Should we speak privately in your room, or decide on a course and talk as we walk?" he asked after a moment.

Ritsuka had promised something. That was, in and of itself, rather surprising, but the fact that it apparently was something important was even more. What was the object in question? And what was going on? It seemed like things were changing, and Alfons was again the one left behind.

With a frown, the German sat on his bed and waited. He wanted to be out and about, he wanted to be doing something, anything... but he had to wait. For a German and an engineer, sitting idle wasn't something that he found very easy to do.

[coming from here]

He was a little out of breath by the time he reached the M41-50 hallway, but he was glad for it. Being out of breath wasn't nearly as bad as being eaten by some monster on the way. Taking his time now, Ritsuka checked every door for its room number, finally coming to M48. He hoped Alfons had waited for him...

Knocking lightly on the door, Ritsuka pressed his ear to it and listened. Was someone in there? "Alfons...?"

Ah, and there he was! Glad that something had finally happened, Alfons hopped up to his feet and opened the door, smiling as he saw Ritsuka. It'd been too long since he'd seen his friend... even if it hadn't really been long at all.

He stepped to the side and motioned for Ritsuka to step in. "I'm glad to see you again. And ah... nothing attacked you on the way, I hope?"

Ritsuka let out a sigh of relief when Alfons smiled at him, feeling at least one weight lift from his shoulders. He hadn't really seen Alfons in so long. Not since the bus trip into town really. After all the terrible things that happened afterward, Ritsuka had been worried that something bad had happened to his friend.

He didn't waste any time in stepping into the room and gave Alfons a hesitant smile, shaking his head. "Nah, nothing attacked me on the way." Of course, he wished he could say something had to help explain away the various bruises and bandages everywhere, but they could easily be brushed off as previous injuries, right? Not really sure where to sit, Ritsuka stood just inside the doorway and gripped the straps of his backpack. "How about you? You been okay lately?"
