"What did they look like? I assume they wouldn't have any solid technology... how did they record their history? How do they deal with conflict? How do they reproduce?" ZEX had to rule out exploring that himself, since he wasn't sure how to actually visit the surface of a gas giant and not get killed in the process ( ... )

Chemistry was not ZEX's strong point, but he didn't think it necessary to advertise that fact.

"That's a lot of material. Where did you come across it?" ZEX asked, honestly curious. "I would think the staff here may search rooms on occasion... I assume you hid them in a safe place." Of course he would have. His human Captain may have been tactless and blunt and charmingly oblivious, but he wasn't stupid. "Once you create your gunpowder... how do you plan on utilizing it?"

"Upstairs-- I had to break a few locks to get at it, but there was some sort of laboratory, and most of it was in the place's supply closet." Zelnick smiled a bit ruefully. "And, well, it's not in the safest place to hide things, but Yuber was in a hurry to get back out and find more supplies. I got the impression we'd hide them better tonight."

What he would do with his gunpowder? "It's probably of most use as an explosive, or as a smoke bomb, or to vaporize more toxic things. Hopefully, it'll be a more... intense deterrent for some of the creatures that run around at night than just a flashlight or knife." He hoped so, anyway-- he didn't really want to face something that a minor explosion couldn't shake.

"I see." ZEX hadn't spent too much time upstairs exploring... that would explain why he'd missed something like that. While he wasn't sure how he'd be able to put such chemicals to real use, they would have been a nice thing to have, anyway. "A laboratory?" ZEX looked thoughtful. "That's odd... why would a place like this have a laboratory?" Was that where he'd been shifted from one body to another? "Do you remember where it was, exactly? I'd like to investigate such a place myself."

It sounded good in theory. ZEX hoped the Captain wouldn't end up blowing his hands off or something. "I see... I'd imagine that would work well to ward off some creatures here."

"I really don't know why." He paused, and added, "It was right next to what looked like an autopsy room, so I'm not sure I want to know." The whole place had been pretty creepy, come to think of it, though he'd been excited enough at the prospect of weapons and chemicals to not notice at the time... "And I think I could give you directions."

He got in a boyishly enthusiastic grin and a "That is the idea," then the intercom spoke up, the nurses started shuffling people back to their rooms, and he waved a hasty goodbye.
