"I'm a soldier," Hughes explained. "I'm pretty good at handling myself in dangerous situations. Get yourself armed, get yourself people who can handle themselves, and you'll be okay. The nights are tough, but not impossible."

Under normal circumstances, Zelgadis wouldn't openly ask for help or show weakness, but the last two nights had taught him to be more open.

"And how does one get armed?"

Last night's visit to the library hadn't worked out the way he had hoped-- he didn't see how he could keep Mason out of trouble without at leas a short sword. Or if they unblocked his magic, which seemed less likely.

"Well, there's a couple of ways." Hughes scrubbed the suds out of his hair, thinking. "There's alchemists who make weapons, but there's a long waiting list for that. You can sometimes find things around the institute at night, and you'd be surprised what you can steal during the day if you're careful."

Zelgadis was suddenly glad he had happened upon Hughes, who seemed a seasoned veteran in the ranks of confused (and often crazy) patients.

"I'd be surprised?"

He hoped Hughes would go on-- any weapon was better than the current status quo.

"Yeah. Arts and Craft's room's got all kinds of stuff, for one." Hughes finished rinsing and stepped back. "You've got to be a little creative, but it's worth it. And your best bet is to get yourself involved with one of the clubs that have been set up. Ask around on the public board."

Zelgadis nodded. He had seen the public board but had never posted... Was it worth the risk of making his desires known? He'd consider it.

He shut off the shower and nodded curtly to Hughes,

"Thank you for your information."

He went to dry off.
