Day 27: Lunch

Sep 26, 2007 09:14

Renji wasn't so certain what this grilled cheese thing was all about, but he liked the sound of some soup. Even if it was strange western soup, well... there wasn't anything bad people could do to soup, in his experience. His good mood was starting to fray at the edges, a little, from the strain of dealing with the Ichimaru issue, and even more ( Read more... )

[unwittingly waiting for Haku]

The orderlies had woken him from a dead sleep. Both of them, this time. The drugs still in Riddick's system kept a good share of the pain in his side at bay... but as he found himself seated in the cafeteria he wasn't really sure how he'd gotten there. A tray of food sat waiting before him, and the only thing he could really think was... well, that he hadn't ever been given anything quite so completely mind-fucking as whatever Landel's used for sedatives. Cryosleep and the other things he'd been hit with over his less-than-moral life didn't even touch this shit. It was definitely much worse than whatever they did at the end of the night, as well as whatever had brought him here initially. At least he had been able to think after those...

He stared numbly at a spot on the table somewhere beyond his food. He'd think about eating when he felt less like he needed to hurl.

Haku had spent the rest of breakfast and much of the second shift under the heavy influence of medication and under close watch. The information he could glean from the rare moments when he was lucid enough to understand all pointed to the idea that the staff seemed to think he'd fallen/jumped/been pushed off the second floor balcony.

As if that were possible. He would have laughed...

By lunch however, he was feeling better and the nurse smiled and told him that he could go to lunch, but he must take it easy. He promised that he would and he was wheeled into the cafeteria.

He spotted Riddick right away, and pointed him out, asking, with the best smile he could muster, if he could sit with his new friend. He was brought to the table, given a bit of soup and juice, and left alone.

He frowned slightly and tilted his head. The man had been sedated. He wondered briefly why, then tried to get his attention.

"Sir? Riddick?"

"Sir? Riddick?"

Who the hell called him 'Sir'... but... the voice was familiar. Riddick forced his head to turn and look at the source. Haku. Parts of his brain snapped back into alignment... but not enough of them.

"You okay?" was all he could manage for the moment. But he was fighting the fog now, though the drugs seemed happy to fight him back.

Haku smiled gently and nodded his head. "Yes," he said. "Thank you. But you..." He trailed off and frowned, smoothing his fingers over the hem of his shirt.

Thankfully, still hidden in the cloth, were the needles he'd taken before. Not useful as weapons, but helpful in a medical sense.

"Can you move your arms?" He couldn't lean over far enough to reach without jarring his own wounds.

Dad.Even if the abrupt contraction across his stomach made him wanna hurl, the hunter, trained for better, managed to keep it in as his bare feet gradually lowered to the floor. Staring blankly at one corner of the ceiling, he just sat there staring; staring so hard he was lost in a lackadaisical paradise within seconds ( ... )

Some patients went quietly their first day. Others struggled. Danielle was definitely one of the later, clearly sedated even as she tried to escape the orderly's firm arms.

A female nurse was leading them, and seeing the empty spot next to Jack, decided that that was as good of a place for Danielle as any. She directed the man with her to place Danielle gently in the seat across from Jack, looking at the coherent patient.

"Good afternoon, Mr. Patterson." The nurse motioned to Danielle. "This young lady is Ms. Frenier, and she's having some trouble coping with her new environment. Please do your best to help her with that, would you?"

Patient socialization should be encouraged, after all. With a nod to her coworker, the two headed back to their jobs, leaving Danielle and Jack to get to know each other.

Diva had done everything right: she had asked for Amshel, she had noticed the woman to be a nurse, she had moved to punish them when they acted out of order. So why? Why were they still alive, after everything done to her? She had forbidden the use of those drugs, no matter what stupid medical reason Amshel had for her, because now that the old man was dead with plenty of food to go around she didn't want to see them ever again.

Because now that...

Not once did she ever stop struggling, and hardly spared the room of noisy people a glance. "No! I don't want to! I said no!" For a being that had the power to bring humanity to a bloody end, she was easily mistaken for a tousled young girl, dragging her feet on the slippery, tiled floor.

The moment her rear end touched the seat, and the restraining hands left, she sprang back on her feet. Or what counted as a spring when her reflexes were not as clear as they should be. Sedatives, she hated them, those two... only human, so why.

The man had been hopelessly subdued to all but his own predicament; that is, until the unresponsive gaze happened on a patient who'd apparently materialised beside him. He'd hardly taken heed of the nurse's greeting. Face still wiped of emotion, (which, ironically, made it glaringly obvious to those on familiar terms with him that he wasn't feeling so hot), his movements were mechanical as he stood and seized the kid's wrist.

The idea of a panicked little girl, frightened by circumstances, had him recall his first day, and the absolute terror he experienced upon realising his brother was absent. It was clear this patient had just arrived - not simply because the nurse had mentioned it, but from the wild hair curtaining ice cold eyes; eyes most likely suited to royalty, capable of warming a room if in the proper environment. ... Maybe. They were pretty remarkable, actually. Her immature huffing seemed to be a sign she was a princess of some sort, though ( ... )

Jack wandered into lunch, serving himself a generous helping of sandwiches and a bowl of soup. He hadn't been hungry at breakfast and now it was catching up to him, though given how many people he suspected wanted to beat him into the ground, he probably shouldn't have been. However, he was more than used to people wanting him dead and really, none of the patients here could rival some of the people he had already escaped from in his old existence outside of Landels.

Though he would need to give these people a run around they'd not soon forget. It's the least he could do for all the unwarrented crap he was getting. At least then he'd feel more justification for having his ass handed to him. Scheming, he bit into his sandwich and waited for hopefully friendly company.

And friendly company he received as Kougaiji unceremoniously parked his ass on the chair opposite John. The trip from sun room to the cafeteria wasn't long but enough to make him hurt like all hell. Twitching brows, mouth a tight line of unforgiving lips, he curled his fingers around the edge of the table to will away the pain.

"You okay?" he asked as the first thing, still staring at his fingers.

The nurse who had been escorting him was fetching him some food. He didn't care what would it be. He'd have to eat but it didn't matter whatever it was he shoved down his throat.

Kougaiji! Just the person he needed to see. He was in great want of a favor and only the demon prince could help him. Then again, only the demon prince thought kindly of him.

"Not really," He smirked. "But maybe you can help me out there, in one regard. Can I trust ya, Kou?"

His smile may have looked playful, but the old glimmer behind his eyes spoke of a serious plan.

Arching a pair of elegant brows, Kougaiji looked up at John, smirk and all, and considered him a moment. Did the man need to ask still?

"Yeah, you can trust me." As long as John wouldn't come to his way to revive his mother - Kougaiji wasn't known for his disloyalty towards friends. "What's up?"

The nurse decided to drop his tray on the table just that moment and the redhead glanced up at her with a frown. She arched a brow at him and he figured that a thank you was not needed. The scent of food, melted cheese and toast drifted up to his nose, stomach giving a loud growl, which he ignored in favor to turn his gaze back at John to study the man curiously. Was he in some kind of trouble?

Fox made his way to lunch, a bit more enthusiastic about eating now than he had been at breakfast. The shift between breakfast and lunch had been spent relaxing.

Between grilled cheese and the salad bar, the salad bar won out. He remembered Lyta's comment about Landels trying to make all the patients fat with the food they were serving.

At least he had seen Otacon, and knew the engineer was alright.

[looking for Hitsugaya]

Well, that had been a waste of time; exactly as she had predicted, actually. Of course, being stuck in a room to talk with other patients while being listened to by the enemy wasn't too hard of a situation to call. That was done with, though... now, for something important. She'd been anticipating her meeting with Hitsugaya all day, if for no other reason than the desire to know why someone was organizing a needlepoint club, or whatever they were doing. Then again, he had mentioned that they were writing in code... hm. Oh well... he'd explain it when he got there.

Utena grabbed herself a small tray of food, and found a seat near the door; the better to spot Hitsugaya upon his entrance, after all. All she had to go on was his word that he looked ten, and the impression that he acted like a senior citizen... not a whole lot, all things considered.

Hitsugaya didn't bother getting food as he entered. He was hungry, but at the first sight of the gooey cheese sandwiches, he felt nauseous again. Still, it was probably for the best, with all the work that needed to be done during lunch. First was his agreement to meet with this Utena individual. Then he had to hunt down Roy and meet with him as planned. Both were hopefully going to be brief.

With all the other details as well as the problems last night running through his head, he couldn't recall if Utena had given him a description of her. His best bet at the moment was to stand near the door and scan the room for someone who seemed to be doing the same.

The advantage was that he was particularly easy to spot. There was one other white haired person of a similar stature to his own, but he didn't have green eyes as vibrant as the captain's. Even still, the other boy looked to be considerably older than 13.

Hm... elementary-school kid with a look on his face like a disgruntled salaryman? Looked like a winner! Utena rose from her seat, and approached the diminutive captain, saying, "Excuse me, but would you happen to be Hitsugaya-san?" He'd introduced himself as a captain, of course, but... well, that was a little difficult to believe. Maybe once she'd seen proof of it, she'd refer to him as 'taichou'...

whiteychan September 26 2007, 17:41:02 UTC
Hitsugaya was used to those who didn't know him refusing to call him captain. She wasn't a shinigami, so he didn't expect it. What he also hadn't expected was her to offer any honorific at all. Someone respectful for once!

He nodded slightly, his face still cold as ice. "I am. You are Utena...and I am sorry, it is the only name I know you by. Is that your family or given name?"
