Nightshift 26: Walk-In Refrigerator

[From hereEd stepped warily into the dark room, shivering at the sudden chill, far cooler than the kitchen was. His breath was coming in little clouds when he exhaled and he wished that he was wearing his coat now. He set the frying pan down to prop open the door, unwilling to take any chances with it closing and shutting him inside ( Read more... )

The moment he felt that chilling brush against his skin Axel found himself wincing violently, quickly bringing his wrist over his arm in a futile attempt to retain whatever warmth he still had. He was wary at first to meander into the room, quite content with just looming over the entrance while he provided Ed with some light.

However, curiosity got the better of him, and Axel soon stumbled inside to get a closer look at what the blond was gaping at in the corner.

"Well, would you look at that." Forgetting the frigid temperature for the moment, the redhead leaned over Ed's shoulder to examine the prize more thoroughly. He'd almost forgotten about the radio's clues earlier that evening, but the blond's little recite managed to jot his memory. "I just hope they left something to put those in."

Kairi shuddered at the sudden temperature change, her arms reaching around her chest to wrap herself into her own embrace. “Ahh, so cold!” Though, it was to be expected, considering they had just walked into a refrigerator.

Moving towards whatever it was that Ed and Axel seemed to have an interest in, Kairi peeked over Ed’s other shoulder with curious eyes, and soon let out a slight gasp at what she saw. “Oh!” Bullets would be useless without an actual gun, though. Frowning at the thought, the copper headed girl peered silently around in the frozen room, her breath coming out in shuddered breaths as her eyes peered around in slight fear. “You think anything else could be left in here...?”

From the corners of the kitchen a shadow detached itself from the darkness. The room shook with a monstrous roar shook the room, echoing off of metal and the high ceiling. Mismatched eyes fixed on the three people investigating the refrigerator.

Growling and snarling, the tall and broad creature lumbered across the room. It resembled a large, gray-skinned ape in its height and posture and thick, meaty fists. But there the resemblance ended. Its head was giant and bulbous, mottled gray skin pulled tightly over a face that held one giant yellow eye and one narrow red one. It had no nose, and its mouth split its face in two. In the lipless cavern were rows of lengthy, yellowed teeth. Its body was devoid of hair, it had no suggestion of gender, and its legs ended in strange, single-toed feet tipped with a single, scythe-like claw.

It was moving quickly.

"Not much use without the actual gun," Ed said softly before setting down the box and standing, ready to keep searching. It wasn't entirely true, he could probably make something using them given a little thought, but if they had a real gun, even though he wasn't the best shot...

The fact that he was moving when the great roar came gave him a few crucial seconds to move. As soon as the sound came he lunged towards the door, grabbing the frying pan handle and turning to face the creature. His eyes widened at the sight of it, it wasn't something he'd ever seen before, but there was no time to talk as it moved quickly towards them.

He jumped towards it, bringing the frying pan down as heavily as he could against one of the arms, trying for the thinnest points. He wasn't expecting much of the blow, but if he could distract it, then Kairi and Axel could out.
