Day 26: Breakfast

Aug 05, 2007 04:14

Sai awoke rather groggily, which wasn't a good sign for a ninja. It meant he was probably ill. He'd need to get checked up with a medic-nin before he did very much more that day. Eyes blinked open slowly to stare at the ceiling and then narrowed in confusion. Not his ceiling. Was he already at the hospital ( Read more... )

Impatiently, the monk sat down at an empty table.

This day couldn't feel any longer. The days here were - in addition to being flat-out assinine with the coddling and schedule -mind-numbingly boring. They'd always felt overly long to Sanzo, but now that he was waiting for the entire day to be over so he could do some reading, it felt even worse ( ... )

Last night had been almost enjoyable. Well, as enjoyable as nights trapped within a mental institution from hell could be. And, really, who was Hakkai to complain?

That left him almost cheerful this morning. A Hakkai sort of cheerful, granted, where it wasn't always entirely clear if he was plotting murder or a new cookie recipe, but that was just the way of things with Hakkai and one had to learn to work with what one had.

Which, in this case, was a moderately cheerful Hakkai. "Good morning, Sanzo."

That greeting was met with a glower. Sanzo failed to see much good coming from this day, other than those files that may or may not even be too useful. He also had several more shifts look forward to trying to tolerate before he could even read the damn files.

"I don't see anything good about it so far," replied Sanzo.

Coupled with the fact that Sanzo was still very much lacking some cigarettes and coffee ( and that waking up in the morning wasn't ever something that put the monk in a good mood) one tended to be faced with a less-than-happy Sanzo.

Still, if Hakkai was here, then Sanzo wanted to get down to the business of those new bandages he'd last seen on the man.

"Aha, of course. I didn't mean anything by it." Ah, so it was an overly cheerful day. He hadn't had one in a while, so perhaps it was due. Or perhaps it was just proactive defensiveness. Even if he wasn't quite sure why he should be defensive quite yet. Sanzo usually managed to think of something ( ... )

Kougaiji woke up with a gasp. The last he could remember was talking with John beside the railing upstairs, he could faintly remember hearing some kind of intercom crack on and someone talking through it, things he couldn't understand, matters he knew nothing about ( ... )

He was a living contradiction - dead but breathing. A life that hung suspended from a thread, waiting for the next moment to take him where he belonged. He had all the patience in the world. Seishirou had called this place a game, but it really made no difference to Kikyo. It was just the next stage beyond nightmares. Somewhere that was not his previous life, which had gone beyond his reach, and he did not miss it. Though his body, perhaps, instinctively craved with an appetite it was accustomed to appeasing.

"Why don't we find some other ways to keep you entertained?" Seishirou had said ( ... )

Either it was Sanzo or his twin brother, who Kougaiji had not had the pleasure of meeting yet. The cafeteria was slowly filling with people, all wearing this same ridiculous uniform. Yawning, talking, eating - it was all so fucking bizarre.

The nurse brought his tray and laid it in front of him, scolding at him for not having been swallowing the pills. Under her careful scrutiny, he gulped them down with cold water.

When she left someone else sat at the table, opposite of Kougaiji. He was still busy staring after the nurse and missed whatever the man said.

"What?" he asked while turning to look at the man at the other side of the table. Long black hair and calmness that made Kougaiji feel a bit uneasy. "Didn't quit catch that... Come again?"

With a slow arch of an eyebrow, Kikyo gazed at the young man from across the table, pausing for a moment before answering.

"Good morning," he repeated, this time with a softer smile. The stranger looked slightly out of place and maybe somewhat uncomfortable. But if Kikyo was good at anything, it was putting people at ease - even if it was false ease. "I hope I am not intruding on a private reverie. I can find another place to sit, if you prefer."

It came to no surprise to Seishirou that after the last intercom announcement, he woke up in his bed to the head doctor's voice yet again. The man didn't seem too happy about his life at the moment. Well, Seishirou couldn't say he felt sorry for him ( ... )

One moment, Max had been caught between a wall of glistening, pointed swords and sunrise, and the next, she was blinking her eyes open in her own room, in her assigned bed once more. “Shit!" she cursed, jerking upwards in bewilderment, the abrupt shift from danger to near-normalcy leaving her senses spinning for a moment.

When the nurse came to get her, she followed without comment, partially lost in disturbing thoughts and partially mapping out every step she took, although she knew she'd walked this exact same path last night.

At least the food in the cafeteria smelled wonderful this morning, she had to admit, heading for the serving area and helping herself to a plateful of waffles. Fresh waffles. How long had it been since she’d had freshly made waffles? And whipped cream and fruit! If this place weren’t so damned annoying psychotic, this place could quickly become considered heaven ( ... )

First pancake half eaten, Seishirou was enjoying himself wholeheartedly. He had decided that the fresh blueberries were his favorites (this morning), and that whipped cream had not tasted this good for quite a while. From his quite strong fascination for them, one might have thought he never had sweets as a kid. But quite the contrary, his childhood had not lacked candy. Perhaps reasonable modesty in eating them, but he had not been expected to live long anyhow.

He let his fork rest when a young woman paused beside his table. A beautiful young woman he added silently.

"No, I practically insist that you sit down," he answered, giving a smile for a smile, amused. "Please." He gestured towards the empty seat.

Max gave a laugh at his unexpectedly enthusiastic reply, setting her tray down on the table beside his own. "Thank you," she replied with a wry grin, sinking down into the empty chair. "I swear, trying to pick where to sit when you don't really know many people around here is like picking numbers for the lottery. And probably more nerve-wracking. I never know if I'll be intruding or not. Or who I'll end up sitting with. This place has quite the menagerie of... strange specimens."

Sticking her hand out in friendly greeting, she cocked her head to the side to appraise him. "I'm Max, by the way."

Gluttony woke up in his bed. He wasn't in the hallways anymore. He was in his bed instead. He didn't remember going to sleep. He didn't remember waking up in this room again. He did remember one thing.

M50 or M60.But he couldn't find it ( ... )

Roland felt like his right arm had been punched by every single member of the Embryon, one right after another, and some had forgotten to get out of their demon forms before doing it. Transforming was definitely a last-resort option here. Still, at least he could manage it, unlike Heat. He'd never be unarmed at night, that was a pronounced advantage ( ... )

A tray filled with food? It still wasn't as good as eating people, but Lust wasn't here and she knew best if it would be okay to eat these people or not. She was so smart, she always knew who was safe to eat, and who would be the yummiest snacks. But a tray filled with waffles was good, too.

He grabbed a waffle in each hand and shoved both into his mouth, swallowing them quickly. This man was good. He didn't pick on him like other people did. He didn't look afraid, either. Just like Lust had been when she first met him. She wasn't afraid, she was just good and smart and warm. Maybe this new good-person knew where Lust was? Maybe he was a friend of Lust's who had come to take him to her!

"Have you seen my Lust?" he asked, not introducing himself. If he knew Lust, he would already know who he was. After all, Lust would have told him. She was smart and intelligent and clever and would think of that.

That... was not a question that Roland had been anticipating, at all. 'More?' or 'Who are you?' had been what he'd expected, not a reference to a carnal sin. And said sin being referenced to as a proper noun, no less. Wait... didn't that remind him of something? He could have sworn it. On the bulletin board? Yes! There had been talk of a Lust, a female who was apparently quite 'developed' and who was utterly fearless ( ... )

Renji woke still lost in that strange feeling of calm. He might have liked it, enjoyed how clear and simple everything felt, if he'd been able to register even something so small ( ... )

Allen woke with a jerk as the intercom came on. Back in his bed. His heart was pounding in his chest. Last night seemed almost like it had just been a dream, but he knew it couldn't be. His wounds had all been tended to. His ribs and the strange cut on his hand. His vision was still a little bit dark, but it was a vast improvement from last night.

But it wasn't his injuries he was concerned about. The Noah were here. Rhode and almost certainly Tyki as well. And with himself and Ravi in their weakened conditions, they hardly stood a chance! Not to mention Rhode's threat. The last thing he remembered hearing from last night. He hugged his arms tightly as he got out of bed. He did remember to grab the ring before the nurse came in to fetch him. It was then he caught sight of his roommate. Sasuke's injuries looked pretty bad. Allen started toward the boy, but was pulled away by the nurse ( ... )

Renji's attention came slowly to Allen, and for a long time he just looked at the boy. He didn't feel like talking, or even making polite conversation, or having anyone near him. He just wanted to be left alone.

After a long, pause, he said, "It was fine."

He supposed he should ask Allen the same question in return. After all... he had been with Rukia. No matter how detached Renji felt, Rukia was the most important thing in his life. Allen didn't seem upset as he had yesterday, so that meant she was most likely okay. "What about you?"

Allen shifted in his seat, a bit uncomfortable under Renji's gaze. He seemed irritated, but that was normal, wasn't it? He picked up a napkin from his tray and wrapped the ring he'd pocketed the other day in it. He did what he could to make the move casual, as though he'd only been wiping sticky fingers into his napkin. He'd prefer not to have the nurse's attention first thing in the morning ( ... )
