Night 60: Main Hallway, 2-East

[From here.]

The entry hallway to the second level happened to be quiet--dare she say, virtually deserted. Tear gave a thoroughly look and feel for the area before signalling Mikado to move ahead. She remained by his side, keeping all senses open for potential dangers. Hopefully none was present, but with this building, a person could never be

Still none of the words and phrases were clear. He watched her dumbly as she spoke, and when her speech halted, he just gave a short nervous laugh. "Ah, I see." No. He didn't. They started to move upstairs and Mikado continued. "I guess that's a little reassuring. --Ah! Not that I want you to be a prisoner! Just that--" Stop talking. Stop talking now. Mikado swallowed, then hung his head slightly. "...Thanks for clarifying."

He had been upstairs once before, with Izaya, and that Harrington soldier. Mikado frowned at the hall. The chapel they were in was over that way. "...there was a soldier in that chapel a few nights ago. I wonder what happened to him." He probably left with the rest. Still, it was too bad. He had been an interesting guy.

The stammering had been expected, and thus, Tear waved the comments aside. The young man was obviously flustered; it did not matter how he had worded his reasoning, as long as he understood. "You're welcome," she said, before gesturing to their destination. "Here, come this way."

[Coming from here.]

Daemon moved down the hall, his flashlight beam illuminating the way, his expression turning serious once more the deeper they moved into the second floor. One never knew what was lurking in the shadows up here. At least they'd avoided the larger rooms tonight. He'd lost track of the rotating schedule of whether it was a night for the worst of the monsters to be unleashed or if there would be fellow patients lying in wait for them.

"The scissors weren't actually that useful for poking things. The ends were blunt, kind of like the shit in the arts and crafts room, only the blades were nice and sharp. But anyway, they were useful for other stuff. Like taking apart pipe fittings."

He sighed, that same depression of waking to find almost everyone gone coloring the sound. "River."

He needed to not dwell on that, not unless he could use it to make his determination to escape and rescue seem greater. There was a lot he needed to figure out how to just deal with these days. And it was better to think about missing River than missing someone else.

Angry really wasn't going to help anyone right now. He needed to keep reminding himself that. Except he didn't seem to have anywhere other than depressed to go if he wasn't just mad as all hell.

Renji followed Daemon down the hall, switching his flashlight back off as he did.

Daemon's pace slowed for a moment at Renji's quiet sigh, pausing so the redhead could fall into step beside him. When he did, Daemon reached out, hand briefly squeezing the other male's shoulder in understanding. This place had taken so many. It was all he could do to force himself to move some days, with the size of the whole this place had ripped from him. Renji had things just as badly. They'd both had friends here. Family. Loved ones. Now they were somehow the only ones left.

"Come on," he murmured softly. "The supply rooms should be just down here."

They moved into the larger hall, and Mikado looked to her for direction as he fell back to the previous subject. "Particles being different in both worlds.... I met someone today that said something like that, actually," he gave hesitantly, by way of explanation. "They actually... Said that magic is used the way electricity is here, basically. That it's a combination of science and magic."

He gave another brief nervous laugh. "Though he was also talking about knights and sorcerers... I didn't know what to believe."

Tear gave consideration when they reached the larger hall. There existed no doubt in her mind that Mikado was a civilian. He carried himself as one and more importantly, more or less made it known he was as 'regular' as a human could be, regardless of their individual origins. The soldier, therefore, wasn't so much focused on the additional help as much as his protection when she settled on her decision.

"Don't worry about paying me back," she said not unkindly. After a brief feel for their surroundings, the Melodist gestured toward the direction of the chapel. "The chapel you met Major Harrington in--I need to conduct an investigation there on behalf of the paramedic group. Would you be willing to join me? If not--" She looked down the corridor, closer to the other end of the institute. "--I can escort you back downstairs."

Regardless of his answer, Tear continued down to the next area.
