Her thoughts were still whirring as Taura took the stairs three at a time.

Would he find someone to replace her? Would he go after Aguilar, or would he take this insult as an excuse to crack down on the Institute? Or even let up on them, only to prove his power again and again?

None of those sounded appealing. And where are ( Read more... )

By the staircase, Goku finally got a good whiff of Taura. She was the only one going upstairs tonight. Unsheathing his staff, the monkey boy held onto the top and propelled himself up the two flights of stairs as it grew. He hit the upper platform with a heavy plop and continued forward to find his group so he could hurry and start a fight!

In the stairway, Yomi pulled her flashlight from the pocket of her sweater and turned it on, letting it illuminate her path as she climbed the steps, light bobbing. She was starting to get into less familiar territory now.

She had spent more time underground than she had on the second floor, but until the higher levels of the Institute opened up, what might be on the second floor hadn’t become a top priority for her. Figuring out the Institute’s many mechanisms was one of the ultimate goals of the game, however, and that night’s History Club assignment served that end. Assuming they got anywhere, of course.

Before that, it was necessary to actually find her ‘teammates’. Hopefully no one confused themselves about Okita’s not-so-secret rendezvous point.

The Scarecrow took to the stairs quickly, glad they seemed to be doing well, especially in comparison to the previous night. He was already bracing himself for crossing the Horrible Hallway, though. He had to have courage, as Lion would tell him.

Especially when his 'dancing partner' looked more unsure by the moment. He looked over his shoulder to make sure she was still following, catching sight of her stiffer posture. He came back a few steps to bring himself closer to her, taking her hand for comfort.

"Now, don't you worry! If they ever come to get you in the night, I'm sure someone will come looking for you. I'll do it myself, if I have to!"

He really was a kind man. Her instincts warred with one another and Lust found herself for a moment at a loss for words. The instinct was to be coy, to use kindness and twist it as she had always done. But there was no need.

"Thank you," she managed. It was strange, but she could swear that things felt different in this place. Stronger. More real. Perhaps it was her near humanity, and this was akin to how humans felt emotions. It was a strange thing, really. As was this comfort, small and spontaneous as it was.

"You're very kind. I'm sorry, it's just the idea of losing control of my own mind..." She shook her head. "It's the only thing I still have." Even her 'freedom' was only an illusion. Her master was gone, but this Landel held all of the cards.

"I'm all right." She squeezed Frank's hand softly, and offered a weak smile. "Let's keep moving."

He returned her smile with one of his own, a bright grin meant to be encouraging. The thought she could be controlled certainly did seem to scare her. For someone who could fight and probably protect herself better than he ever could to be so frightened of something struck a familiar chord in him. That wasn't saying she was cowardly, of course, but there was something there that resonated within him.

"Don't be scared," he said, keeping hold of her hand as he turned back and continued up the stairwell. "Some of us lost our minds a long time ago, and others never had them at all, and we've gotten along just fine. Well, in a way."

And into the stairwell. Nothing new here, nothing dangerous - although maybe he should stop thinking about how peaceful their journey has been so far. Wouldn't want to jinx them or anything.

He'll think about their destination instead, then. So what was this chapel like? Byrne had been pretty curious about it ever since Badd first mentioned it, but he was even more curious now that they were about...halfway there? (According to his maps.) That was probably why he was taking the stairs at a somewhat quick pace right now, skipping a step or two here and there. The faster they got up there, the more time they'd have to investigate, after all.

Badd took the stairs slowly, watching the ceiling as well as the more conventional hiding places for mooks and monsters. "Then we'll just have to put reality to a vote if things get weird." And have each others' backs if the institute decided to go all Shining on them.

This was the place where that poor kid had turned into the bleeding monster goat, if he recalled correctly. Badd hadn't even noticed the one spot of real weirdness in a sea of hallucinated weirdness. He needed Byrne with him to ensure that it didn't happen again.

Daemon stepped into the stairway, taking a moment to shine his flashlight beam up into the high ceiling above them, making sure there weren't more things lurking out of sight like last night.

"Well, considering everyone in this place could pull out the stops in return, I suppose I can't blame them," he commented as he started to climb. "For all the good it really did us. Although did you hear the doctor's announcement tonight? Sounds like he was quite distraught over losing a certain female. Perhaps last night wasn't a total loss after all."

"Well, all the pretty's got to be useful for something," Renji said with a grin.

He sobered a little, thinking about the events of the previous night. "Didn't do fuck all that I could see, but maybe helping the two humans gets out was good enough. I don't know. If it pisses off the Head Goat Fucker, it's good enough for me. I'd still feel a lot better if we'd actually managed to do something concrete, though."

Daemon made a choked sound at Renji's pet name for the doctor, his face looking strained for a moment. Still, his golden eyes danced with laughter as he shook his head at the Shinigami's creativity.

"You and me both. It will happen, Renji," he answered, clapping a hand on the redhead's shoulder before climbing the rest of the stairs and stepping out into the hallway above.
